I feel Cloke really needs to step up and become a dominant big man to carry our FWD line.

Plenty of MIDs capable of rotating through the FWD line and kicking the odd goal but we need a dominant big man.

Anthony makes the most of his opportunities but he cant take a game by the scruff of its neck.

Fraser will cause match up headaches for opposition coaches but cant see him kicking 40+ goals TBH.

Not all doom and gloom thats for sure, still plenty to be positive about.

A firing Cloke will give us a better chance of competing with the top 2.

Just saw a few of the boys down at HP movies today and Ben Reid is huge!!! J-Mac is alot taller then i thought....and Thoolan looks as unco in real life as he does on channel 2 lol

I don't believe in just forwards, mids and defenders anymore. Maybe a split like:

Key Forwards:
Travis Cloke
John Anthony
Sean Rusling
Chris Dawes

Outside Midfielders:
Alan Didak
Leon Davis
Paul Medhurst
Steele Sidebottom
Brad Dick
Sharrod Wellingham
Ryan Cook
Anthony Corrie

Dual Midfielders:
Dane Swan
Scott Pendlebury
Dale Thomas
Dayne Beams

Inside Midfielders:
Luke Ball
Shane O'Bree
John McCarthy

Defensive Midfielders:
Heath Shaw
Nick Maxwell
Harry O'Brien
Simon Buckley
Jarrod Blight
Jaxson Barham

Key Defenders:
Simon Prestigiacomo
Nathan Brown
Ben Reid

Stoppers:
Alan Toovey
Tyson Goldsack

Rucks/Key Utilities:
Darren Jolly
Josh Fraser
Cameron Wood
Leigh Brown

Utilities:
Tarkyn Lockyer
Ben Johnson
Brent Macaffer

As opposed to picking 6 or 7 players in each position maybe the coaching panel looks at choosing different combinations of player for different teams. Does a team have 1 or 2 big key forwards? Do they have hard-bodied or quick mids? etc etc.

Key Forward - Self-explanatory. Looking for bags of goals from these guys. Select up to 3 of these players.

Outside Midfielders - Or maybe attacking mids. Many of these players play predominantly forward a la Dick and Medders but coaches don't draft specialist forward pockets, hence, outside/attacking mids. All players drafted are expected to be able to play in the middle. Select up to 5 of these players, rotating through middle and forward lines.

Dual Midfielers - Or "true" midfielders. Play inside and outside, rack up the big numbers and deliver to our forwards. I'm hoping Thomas will play as a dual mid in '10. Select up to 4 per game.

Inside Midfielder - Specialist clearance winners, unfortunately probably don't have much of an outside game (not 100% sure on McCarthy). Select up to 3.

Defensive Midfieler - These guys play directly on the opposition goal-scoring threats and outside midfielders. They play a more defensive role than the other 3 midfield classes but players like Shaw and Harry O show that they can also provide rebound and attack through the defensive side of the middle. I was thinking of classing Harry and Maxwell as defensive utilities but decided against it. Select up to 4.

Key Defenders - Play on opposition key forwards obviously. Selection depends on opposition key forwards.

Stoppers - I couldn't think of a better name. Play a negative role on the opposition most potent goal-scoring outside mids. I don't think Toovey and Goldsack provide too much run like the defensive midfielders do, hence, stopper, hopefully they can add it to their game's in '10. Select up to 2.

Rucks/Key Utilities - Straight forward, play in the ruck and possibly rest in the forward line. Brown's probably the only one in this group who can play as a key back. I was thinking of classifiing him in his own group. Select up to 3.

Utilities - Stop-gaps, play wherever they're needed. Select up to 3.

I've probably put some names in the wrong postions, left out some of the rookies and players yet to play that I'm not 100% on.

Great effort.:thumbsu:

Bold = Starting 22
Underline = Emergencies
Italics = Depth players who are still likely to feature in games in 2010

Back:
1. Nick Maxwell
(Inspirational captain. Leader of this backline who looks as good as ever)
2. Harry O'Brien (Gets better every season so expect much of the same from Harry in 2010. Looking good and ready to go)
3. Heath Shaw (Had a strong finish to 2009 and looks ready to go)
4. Nathan Brown (Added significant size over the offseason and looks ready now to take on the oppositions biggest forwards)
5. Ben Reid (Now has an AFL ready body. Still has the same athleticism he was drafted for and has a quality disposal for a big. Finished 2009 strongly at VFL level and looks ready to break into this side now, but as a KPB)
6. Alan Toovey (Was solid in 2009 and ever reliable. His disposal looks great this preseason and is continuing to improve which is great to see. Looks like a best 22 guy now without a doubt)
7. Tyson Goldsack (Looks to have his confidence back which is a big thing in his play. Put him on the bench as my 22nd man, but think he is deserving of making the team. Will have to work hard and perform consistently if he wants to retain his spot though)
8. Simon Prestigiacomo (Didn't make my team because both N.Brown and Reid are both in far better form at the moment)
9. Ben Johnson (Will list him as a backman because I consider the running off half back as the role he was most suited to)
10. Leigh Brown (Also will be used as KPF depth, so will be handy on both ends if injury hits any of the big men)
11. Simon Buckley (Doesn't look to bad. Not best 22 in my books, but a chance at breaking into the side with a string of good performances at VFL level)
12. Jarrad Blight (Having a great preseason and reeks of potential. Don't think he will get many early games, but if he plays well at VFL level could get a look later on)

Midfield:
1. Scott Pendlebury
(I expect Pendlebury to take over as our most important player in 2010. Everything he does on and off the field is class)
2. Dane Swan (Improves every season and had a big one in 2010, any further improvements are a bonus. Would probably be looking for him to add some more hurt to his disposal to improve his game further. Don't be surprised to see him playing forward or back for periods of games, wherever he is he will just accumulate the ball regardless of location on the field and with such a surplus of quality midfielders now probably can afford to do that)
3. Alan Didak (Now to play perminantly as a midfielder, might go down forward every now and then but now a midfielder)
4. Luke Ball (One of the summers big additions. Will add leadership, hardness and experience to our midfield all things we are very much in need of)
5. Darren Jolly (Big time ruckman and some would say the best in the league. Will be a big help and along with Ball make our midfield a strength in 2010)
6. Dayne Beams (Came from nowhere in 2009, and is looking in even better shape for the 2010 season with increased fitness and size which will lead to more midfield time)
7. Steele Sidebottom (At VFL level was our best player throughout the season. Performed consistently week in week out and never cracks in big games. Expect him to be a regular with his added size and skills)
8. Shane O'Bree (Still looks pretty safe at the moment. Had a big 2009 season and was clearly amongst our best players. Will still have to perform up to the level in 2010 if he is to retain his position in the midfield)
9. Cameron Wood (With Jolly and Fraser still not convinced that Wood will be a starting 22 player. Has added some significant size over the summer and looks allot better in the ruck. Just will have to add some consistency to his game now if he wants regular games which is certainly achievable)
10. Jaxson Barham (A real energy guy who can come in for a few weeks here and there and really produce. Came top 3 in fitness testing and is faster than Dale Thomas on the run. Has immense tackling pressure. Just needs to continue to work on his disposal ability and add a little more size if he wants regular games)
11. Sharrod Wellingham (Looks a bit down the pecking order now which just shows the great depth we now have. Will need to consistently produce at VFL level if he wants to be a part of this now very deep midfield)
12. Jarryd Blair (Looking really good and is a little warrior. Certainly performed exceedingly well at VFL level in 2009 and looking great in 2010 also. Good chance he might just crack it for a few games if injury hits)

Forward:
1. Travis Cloke
(Should bounce back some after a poor 2009 season. Hard worker and will receive some reward for effort in 2010 with a better season)
2. Leon Davis (Will also spend some time in the midfield, but looks set to play most of his football off the half forward flank)
3. Paul Medhurst (Had a poor 2009 season but looks the goods for 2010. Indications are looking much brighter for 2010 and looks well and truly over ancle problems)
4. Jack Anthony (Had a big season in 2009, I don't expect him to replicate his season but still would hope for a 40-50 goal season none the less)
5. Dale Thomas (Will spend likely split his time between playing up forward and in the midfield in 2010, expect a more attacking role)
6. Josh Fraser (Was a ruckman and now looks set for a role up forward. With Jolly likely to play 75-85% ruck time will spend most of his time forward where he could help stretch opposing backlines and give us a better balance between talls and smalls)
7. Tarkyn Lockyer(Should play most of his football up forward now with a solid midfield and backline. Could get pushed out of the side if one of the reserve guys is performing well, so will have to continue his good work up forward and continue to perform strongly)
8. Brad Dick (Won't be back till mid season so at the moment pretty hard to gauge his position, but when fully healthy would be pretty close to our best 22)
9. Brent Macaffer (A utility, but definitely plays his best footy up front. As accurate on goal as Jack Anthony at his best, which makes me think as the season progresses he could replace Lockyer up forward)
10. John McCarthy (Listing him as a forward because this is the only spot I see him making the side due to our incredible midfield depth with the addition of Ball and development of Sidebottom and Beams. Can see him playing a handy role off a half forward flank entering the midfield for short periods, but will have to work his way up the pecking order first though which he could do if he stays injury free)
11. Sean Rusling (If he can stay injury free like McCarthy is every chance of making the side. History is against him, but certainly a chance)
12. Chris Dawes (Developing well and this position in the standings is very much deceptive. Will most likely only get used if injuries occur, but considering Rusling's injury history he isn't really all that far down the pecking order at all)

Feel free to name drop if I forgot anyone of significance.

Starting 22 (round 1 2010)=

However much I would love brown and Reid to be out back spine this year and would live them to dominate... A backline that young would get absolutely owned a few games and to be honest I don't think malthouse would be willing to take the risk of the two youngena unless against very weak opposition or presti went down

I would classify the depth chart as follows, with other positions in brackets:

Key Position Defenders (FB, CHB)
Prestigiacomo

Prestigiacomo

Quality question? = likely to be two 10 year KPB supported by two older timers in case of injury; also emerging = Carter? Young?; have three or four smaller pinch hitters

Defenders (HBF, BP)
Shaw (M-2010?)
Maxwell (KD)
O'Brien (KD)
Toovey
Goldsack
Buckley (M)
Blight
Sinclair (M)

Quality question? - are any of these able to supply speed, rebound or run and carry? TBC (other than Shaw) Buckley, Blight, Sinclair to be tested; developing = Scott Reed, who has a lot of toe.

Key Position Forward (FF, CHB)
Cloke
Anthony
Dawes
Rusling
Quality question? - lots of potential but lots of question marks - even with Jolly, Fraser, Wood going forward more in support; emerging = McNamara? possibly Witts in 2012??

Forwards (HFF, FP)
Lockyer
Medhurst
Dale Thomas (M)
Dick
MacAffer
McCarthy (M)
Corrie
Josh Thomas (M)
Quality question? Dick gets injured a bit; are we one small crumbing forward short?

Ruckman
Jolly
Fraser (KF)
Wood
Halleluliah! plus emerging = Keeffe? McNamara? Witts? No questions here.

Midfielders
Swan
Didak (F)
Pendlebury
Davis (F)
Ball
O'Bree
Beams
Sidebottom
Johnson (D)
Wellingham
Cook
Barham
Rounds
Quality question? it has playmakers in Didak and Pendlebury; endurance linkers such as Swan and Sidebottom; extractors in O'Bree, Ball (with possibly McCarthy, Beams, or Blair to come); brilliance of Davis; however, does it have any taggers yet and can it move the ball quickly by foot or run and carry?

These are some of the questions (in bold) that I'd have about our list depth - not just the quantity of players in each of these helpful categories, but the quality of the options as a whole within each category. You may have other questions of each.

I think it could happen. Playing against St Kilda will be the natural test, but I think Brown and Reid will do reasonably considering the quality of opposition they are playing against.

Prestigiacomo looks slow and just doesn't seem to be able to keep up anymore. Last season he struggled against the leagues best forwards, but I think Brown/ Reid will have a far better chance at containing them. I certainly hope Prestigiacomo can replicate his 2009 form but early signs are saying no. From training Reid and Brown look far more ready to take on the challenges of the 2010 season and both look ready to slot into the side. They both have AFL ready bodies, far more athleticism, skill and with a few more games of experience I think will well and truly pass him this season.

Presti is one of Collingwood's fastest tall backman but he is a power athlete - he can keep a speedy Fevola under wraps but can't handle forwards who run all day like Riewoldt and Franklin.

Riewoldt especially is an endurance freak who regularly leads to the wings and then busts his gut to get back to the forward 50. There's no way Presti can keep up with that type of athlete.

Nathan Brown I don't think is the right type to do better, while I haven't seen enough of Ben Reid to determine whether he has the tank to hang with Riewoldt.

Collingwood best option at this stage could be Chris Dawes. Top 5 endurance at the club, I wouldn't be suprised to see him trialled at CHB v StKilda in the NAB cup to mark Riewoldt.
