Fill me in with your news on DIck? Is he really set to make a comeback? Doubt the club would fully support him, although the club did set a precedent with Rusling!

Did it suggest how Marty Clarke would get to us? Eg first round draft pick? PSD? Some deal with Leprechauns? or Giants? Or maybe the AFL are about.....to bring in a new rule? (to supercede the 'old' new rule about players being allowed a year off and then return to the same list; now all past players on any list have a 'free time away from the game agency' right to return to said list if Club agrees after a relaxed few years down the track).

Think Bucks and an attacking-focused Marty would click well, but there might be a few rainbows to tick yet before anything 'is certain'.

No suggestion. Just reports from Ireland that he is likely to return to play footy in AFL with Moaney.

GWS are in it for the long run and most want high draft picks and future draft picks.

O'Meara is a projected no.1/2 overall for the 2012 draft - very strong.

Shaw is worth closer to pick 7/8 in an open market I would calculate - but would obviously have far greater value to Collingwood due to age + level of production when playing.

!

He would never be on the open market. If they had the chance to secure a player like Shaw who could lead their backline for over 5 years they would do it. Especially when they are likely to secure a few other compo picks in the 2012 draft anyway.

Of course we won't be trading Shaw.

Just the discusion was in the scenario (won't happen) that we decided to trade him what draft selection would he be worth in an open market.

If I was GWS and Shaw was on the table. Would I trade pick 7 for Shaw? Yes.
Pick 5. No.

I reckon you are spot on Knightmare. I would expect the range for Shaw would be 7-10. Not lower than that, though.

GWS would want a Shaw, plus an early first round pick (which we wouldn't have) if they were going to even consider giving us one of the picks that could land O'Meara.

I think you would want to throw in a 3rd rounder as well to be anywhere near realistic value.

To help you out a little there because some are wrong:

Goldsack is contracted until the end of 2012.
Harry O until end of 2012.
Ben Reid 2012.
Beams 2012.
Davis end of 2011.
Nathan Brown end of 2011.
Cam Wood end of 2012.
Darren Jolly end of 2013.
Alan Didak end of 2013.
Dane Swan end of 2014.

As you can see, we'll have a fair few players coming out of contract at the end of 2012 including Wellingham, Pendles, Sidebottom, Ball, Tarrant, Shaw and Cloke.

List management better get it sorted.

Wouldn't these 4 as rookies have been one year contracts. Thus contract ending at the end of this year?

Nah standard minimum contract is 2 years for new draftees. Don't know what the rules are for players that have previously been in the system though.

I also believe that Blair would be signed up until the end of 2012 as I'd assume he got a standard two year deal when upgraded.

Have they changed it recently? In the past the whole point of the rookie list was that they were only on a one year contract.

I'm 99% sure the article below is the current CBA.

http://www.afl.com.au/Portals/0/afl_docs/Collective%20Bargaining%20Agreement%20-%20Website%20Summary_040507.pdf

The CBA ensures that all Players drafted for the first time must be contracted by that AFL Club for a minimum
period of two (2) years (apart from promoted Rookie Players who can be contracted for one (1) year).

The minimum payment to Rookie Players in Seasons 2007 is $30,000 which is not included in Clubs’ TPP.

http://www.afl.com.au/Portals/0/afl_docs/Collective%20Bargaining%20Agreement%20-%20Website%20Summary_040507.pdf

Keefe and Blair fall under the banner of players that could have been given one year deals, as they were upgraded last year, but I doubt the club would have given them that length contract. I believe the second part re the TPP explains why Rookies are released quite regularly after their first year on a club list.

If I can offer a suggestion - when you've got the contracts nailed down, maybe put a link to that particular post in the Quicky's links thread?

Can be useful (and save a lot of questions!) to have it to hand.

i was just thinking before that collingwood love grabbing a delisted or recycled player and turning them good i rekon we might grab one again this year
someone like byron schammer or something hard to tell but hes one thats worth a punt and looks on the verge of delisting

The major query with Schammer is what skills/ strengths does he have that would compliment our current list? The ones that have worked for us in the past have done so because they brought a positive to the table and I personally don't see it with Schammer. In my mind he's an outside midfielder, with dodgy skills and a lack of pace. Basically a slower version of Brett Peake.

If we were to go down this path I'd lean towards the likes of Simon Hogan, Brodie Martin, Aaron Cornelious and Callum Bartlett (if Brisbane have concerns over his injuries that we feel we could address). But it's hard to make a definite appraisal of it until we know who's delisted.

Saw this article that said Clarke spoke to the Pies, who didn't want him, so he'd just be nominating for the draft.

http://www.irishecho.com.au/2011/07/28/collingwood-say-no-to-prodigal-clarke/11323

Given the date of this article, it is a lot more recent (only by a few days). Surprised that we said "No" (must be salary cap reasons) and also surprised that we could claim him without him nominating for the draft or trying to orchestrate a deal with another club.

I don't think we could have claimed him directly, without him going through the draft somehow. We could have last year, because there's some clause that allows (international only?) players who have been off a club's list for 1 year to return directly to that club. However, Clarke's been off our list for 2 years now, so that clause wouldn't be applicable anymore.

Wouldn't touch him. Better players going around in the VFL.

St Kilda are the kings of recycled players. Some work. Others don't turn out so great.

Their style tends to be along your line of thinking where you pick up someone around 25 years of age who can compete now and have some impact. Which sounds logical for a team trying to win premierships now.

But these tend to be fringe types. And taking on fringe types isn't conducive to making a list better and mostly just aid slightly in building some depth.

Recycling is more an opportunity to add a player who can play a specific role to a reasonable level because that club is lacking that variety of player.

Leigh Brown worked out because he could find a role within our structures which he can play solidly.

But now with a list looking fairly complete and with few holes, unless there is one who particularly stands out. I'd be more keen to look for players with a little more potential through the draft.

Hypothetically if we did have first dibs at Marty- could we trade him on to another club? Marty, Goldy and pick for.........

My understanding is no, you can only trade a player that is currently on your list. Even if we were able to re-list Marty directly last year or this year, it wouldn't count as him actually being on our list now. Gold Coast were able to trade players like Krak by pre-listing them, which was one of their special concessions as part of their club set-up.

I personally wouldn't take back Marty Clarke. Honestly, where would he fit in? Our back line has so much depth, a lot of our players can come in and play a running off half back type role like Marty did. Also, saying that, he hasn't played in two years nor has he been on an AFL training schedule for two years. Collingwood's game has become so much more technical, I think it would be pretty hard for a guy that is as stiff as he is to come in and make an impact especially if he hasn't played at any level for 2 years. I'd prefer it if we made a play for some of the guys playing in VFL for us (K.Pendlebury, Eddy, Sundberg etc.)

I'd take Marty back if he wants back.

Is the same age as Simon Buckley now and at that age where if you get him, you would want him to be best 22 and not just as a fringe player. But I think he can do it.

Won't get back to that standard immediately, but with the way we know he can work I think he would be able to get back into the best 22.

One of the few if not the only in this type of unique situation I would have any confidence in having come back.

Endurance is huge and with a preseason can build it back up again. Now very solidly build. Has a great kick on him. Would be a great Ben Johnson replacement on a wing.

Obviously wouldn't pay a high draft pick. Would only be willing to use a late selection. 3rd pick in the draft or 4th if we use that many would be what I'd be looking at.
