How the heck can the blues afford that contract with McKay, Curnow, Cripps, Walsh all on huge contracts and a bunch of other players like Saad and Williams on massive overs. Even without Martin it still seems like their cap should be bursting at the seams.
Hopefully, all the others are on shit money and the whole club implodes

Reportedly on $650k to $700k. Allowing for increase in the salary cap it supposedly wont be too much of a difference. However I agree with you. De Koning has to be re-signed this year as well

See, this is the biggest misunderstanding that people have about the landscape these days. Players nominate a club, and then everyone else becomes irrelevant. It doesn’t matter how many suitors he has if he doesn’t want to go to them.
Maybe but the original club could just say we are not trading you. Go to the draft and join North.
Granted players are gaining more power but plenty of times players don't get where they want.
Pies could offer a future 1st + a noble type.
If banned from futures they may need to sell off a player or 2 to get one

North? Mate if he goes to the draft he’s going to the Hawks, who are chasing him anyway. Great way for the dogs to cut off their nose to spite their face. The dogs aren’t run by children, they’ll be pragmatic knowing that Smiths salary off the books benefits them anyway.
Future first plus a player for Smith is nonsense.

Really not at all fussed over our forward line. Get the midfield (most important) and defence right and then do the best you can up forward. As long as we have the strong pressure players there, and we do, we can fill in other spots with whatever. Least important line for mine, its success is determined more by processes all over the field than individuals.

Not too many immediate concerns in defence, though a mid priced Murphy replacement would be nice. Our number one priority is to make sure we have a strong midfield that complements Nick's skills going forward. The goal has to be contention for the next 10 years with one of the best midfielders in the comp. That kind of sustained success is tough and we don't have much capital, so will have to be very smart.

Think we'll continue to do what what we've been doing. Bringing in players in their mid to early 20s where we can (mostly mid level or unrealised) and probably looking at one big FA in the next two years - LDU would seem to be ideal in 2025. Doubt we look at landing a high priced tall forward, very few are worth the money. Any trade for top talent this year doesn't seem possible given we don't have the capital.

Fingers crossed on NGAs father/sons Cat B types. McGuane looks to have potential for a Jaicos type development, not Nick dominant but smart and skilled, will be an interesting watch next year.

What would you offer?

I’d be looking at the Hawks 2nd that we have this year, plus taking Lobbs salary ($1m over 2 years) off their books, plus maybe a future 3rd. Having that extra coin off their books will go a long way to retaining English and giving Sam Darcy what he’s going to be worth in the next couple of years.

Someone mentioned Josh Battle and I think he’d be gettable from the Saints, capable swingman, solid tall defender who can go forward when needed and in the right age bracket (26 in September) He’d be perfect and won’t command too high a price compared to others

True but he has a lot if suitors. What can pies realistically put foward as a competitive offer?
Future 1st and Hawks 2nd. Probably two picks around the following:
Pick 8-20 and pick 28. If Collingwood and Smith commit to each other the deal will get done imo. The other suitors pretty much disappear if he picks us.

They trade 2 of Young, Williams and Martin. Probably for peanuts because they are just freeing up cash.

That probably works. But if we're locked out of further trading of futures we may need to trade a player to get the first

Weitering would be on good coin as well.

Lobb is not on enough coin to justify the Dogs taking a cut on Smith's price. You might get Lobb for effectively free in a separate trade, but he doesn't have negative value. There will be a first round pick plus some involved in a Smith trade.

Whether we have interest in Lobb would come more down to his attitude/personality. I think he's a good enough player and can fill a role in the short term. Right now we have Cox as a fixture and he's only kicked 3 goals for the year. It's the one position in the team we could clearly upgrade if we find the right player.

And Weitering...McGovern, Hewett, Cerra, Newman was brought in too. How they have money left in the cap is suspicious. But I suppose given their upstanding history in this area we should stand down... there wouldn't be any Carlton types at AFL house that would sweep this under the rug, would there be?

Luke Hodge:drunk:, said that Norf should try and get Ollie wines from port because he isn't getting enough midfield time. I would love to pry him out of Port even though he has 2 years on his contract. At 29, he would solve our inside mid problems for the next 3 years. He was brilliant against Geelong when he got to play a full game in the middle and goes very well everytime he gets the chance to play there. What do we think folks

Think he'd be an ideal Mitchell replacement, but he is contracted at the end of the day. Those kinds of players are where we should go for grunt

Clubs afford big contracts to stars by paying their depth well below average salaries. If he's on what is rumoured, that's $300,000 a year overs for reserves depth which is all he is for them - a similar amount of overs to what Grundy and Treloar were on when we shifted them. Dogs will be keen to get his contract off their books.
