I am not one to start a thread bagging anything to do with Collingwood the club has not done much wrong in the past few years

But I have been to both games this year and a couple of opposition games

I am really concerned about what we have coming up 2 years ago our depth was almost the strongest in the league this year I would say it would be in the bottom 6

My concern is our kids that have come through since after the Sidebottom Beams draft have been rubbish apart from Fasolo

I know we have not had high picks but Geelong and Hawthorn have both done very well and have both been in similar positions in selecting young kids the past two years which is a huge reason why Geelong is still so powerful

I'm worried that in 3 years time we will have this huge drop in talent because nobody is coming up just think of StKilda 12 very good players then a big drop of

Have Hine and his team dropped the ball the last couple of years

I don't think Hine and co have "dropped the ball" I think we are a victim of the compromised drafts.

Heck, even sides like Richmond and Melbourne are showing how hard they have been effected by the compromised drafts, yet we've been in the top 4-6 over the past 5-6 years now.

We have tried to make up for the lack of early draft picks by trading our late first rounders for mature aged players, and to an extent it has worked.

I still think we have a decent group of youngsters, they just need time to develop.

The reason it is more "visible" now then last years is because of the amount of players we've lost over the past 2 seasons.

Medhurst, Fraser, Presti, Brown, Davis, McCarthy, Lockyer etc etc, have left a massive hole, yet we have still challenged for a flag.

We are goin ok, Geelong's youth is highly over rated also, their youth didn't win that game today, Bartel, Chapman, Hawkins etc did.

Hine has had a few misses by the look last few years, but he's well in credit still.

The concern re middling players being squeezed out for kids, do that we can pay the big bucks to the select handful of superstars is very valid.

However, I backing the club to be smart enough to see this and calculate accordingly, because if not, we are in for a number of pretty lean years potentially when the stats retire.

Without wanting to reopen the Leon debate, the possibility does exist, that we lost him due to high payments to a few re-signings already.
( though he may well have left regardless)

Too early to say for sure, but Seedsman, Paine, Gault, Ugle, Witts, Hartley may all be major players one day.

Why is everyone worried about our depth all of a sudden??
Apparently we had the same problem last year, but we got to the GF.

Our depth last year was not a concern we had injuries but all our players expect Brown and Beams played in the GF our problem last year is we were under done and missed alot of players for chunks of the year

I'm not worried right now I'm concerned in 3 years time when Didak Johnson Maxwell Tarrant Jolly are gone and these are the kids that need to replace them

I would agree that this list of players have potential and show all the signs you wish to see. If I had a concern, it would be that we have a bit of a hole between our group of 18-19 year olds and our 23+ age group. Those players at 20, 21, 22 (Rounds, Thomas, Sinclair, Young etc) aren't coming on enough, meaning we are putting more pressure on our youngest than what I would like. The other gap in our list that worries me a little is in our key position areas. Keeffe coming on has eased my concerns in the back half, but I'm not at all confident of the back up to our key forwards. Cloke and Dawes are stupidly important, but if one or both go down and the fact that Tarrant looks to be having one of those years - who have we got to depend on?

Geelongs kids did bugger all today. Its the old names driving them forward still.

In the 08 draft we took Beams and Sidebottom, plus Brown with our last pick and Blair in the rookie draft. Four premiership players within two years....you dont get better than that. And we still have Rounds from that draft as well..Blight was delisted. It was the year we too Keeffe in the rookie draft too.

In the 2009 draft we spent our first three picks on Jolly and Ball. Sinclair and Thomas were late picks. We spent our last pick on Buckley. Clearly with only two new players picked Hine didnt rate that draft.

And the 2010 draft is way too early to call....the players are only in their second seasons ffs. In a compromised draft we traded away our first pick for Krakouer (3 goals in the GF, he has already justified being picked). Fasolo has obviously been a hit and Seedsman already looks the goods whilst Ugle is promising and Ceglar is a ruck of the future.

And already from the 2011 draft (after again trading away our first round pick in a compromised draft) Paine and Yagmoor have had games whilst Witts Elliott are highly rated.

It looks like we didnt yield much from the 09 draft (except a premiership ruckman and midfielder!!!) but its too early to panic just yet.
..

If you trade out your 1st round pick for 4 years straight your talent in the 2's is going to be thin, guess what we did...

.........won a flag?

Two of those drafts were compromised in a year we finished top. We traded away pick 30 odd to get young players we would have drafted anyway (Elliot and Ceglar)...plus we got Krakouer and Clarke as well

The other draft yielded us Jolly and Ball.

Maybe we paid up too much for Wood in 07 but we needed a ruckman.

I really cant see the problem. Lets not forget we had about seven promoted rookies in our premiership side.

3 years straight actually.

2009 trading landed us a premiership.

2010 krak had a great year. Why wouldn't we be happy with that? When Krak kicked his 3rd goal in the GF was anyone thinking, wish we'd kept that pick 25. Ceglar has time on his side.

2011 too early to tell. Marty looks to have picked things up fairly quickly again and will get much better over the coming weeks. Elliott looks a real player and rumoured that we rated him around pick 30 anyway. Fitted a need perfectly.

Picks in 2010 & 2011, while classed as 1st round picks, were pick 25. That is a mid 2nd round pick in a normal year.

Way too much hindsight going on lately due to our depth issues.

Caff and Krak going down has really hurt our depth.

I really cant see the problem.

I have no issues trading for Jolly and spending pick 30 on Ball but we are in a thread about the dearth of talented kids coming through.

Maybe it's because we have had our 1st pick in the 30/40 range for multiple drafts and imo we have traded out of too many drafts and it could come back to bite us too early to tell.

Can't pot the club for securing Jolly but I think we paid overs for Wood with pick 14 plus a 3rd rounder.

It was five years ago now. It has no bearing on the numbers of "kids" coming through in 2012. At the time we desperately needed a ruckman to help Fraser. We paid up in 07, got a verstaile part time ruck in 08, and paid up in 09. Two of them are premiership players. Yes we paid up for Wood in hindsight but in context of knowing we couldnt win a flag with Fraser alone, it was a risk worth taking.

It was one of the 4 years i was referring to as a traded out pick just had the 08 draft between which was my mistake, and a 22 year old is still a youth coming through.

C.Ward, T.Pears, A.Rance, S.Reid J.Grimes are just some of the names read out from that pick, Wood may or may not step up he has improved so not writing it off but gee he is 25ish so really should be playing his best footy now.

That Wood deal was absolutely shocking. Surely we could've kept the pick and traded a second rounder for him, because that was what he was worth, being generous.

Yes but thats the ONLY first round pick we have traded that was obviously an error. There were some handy players picked up between 14 and 30....Grimes Taylor S Selwood Lobbe Pears Meredith Otten Ward....with hindsight one of them would have been better than McCarthy who we took with our second rounder.

Spot on. The biggest myth in footy presently is that Geelong's dynasty will continue because of its brilliant crop of young players. In reality, they're not that great.

Spot the odd one out of those blokes!

You can tell that 07 was pretty light on when Sam Reid from the Giants is someone we missed out on
