Living in Brisbane i've seen him play quite a few times. Earlier this season he had cemented himself in Brisbane's best 22 as an in-and-under half-back flanker before succumbing to injury. His footy IQ is very poor though (Which is entirely understandable coming from Gaelic footy.)

What do you guys think of this pickup, and how will he contribute to the team?

Leigh Matthews liked him (gave him 29 games in three seasons) - I guess he knows a bit about footy...

He's just 22 and is still developing. Could be a very pleasant surprise.

The club wanted to bolster their defensive stocks with an AFL ready player in case of injury. Looks like Begly will fill this role, so he'll have time to develop some more in the VFL.

I prefer this option over Carrol.

Not a bad late pick, there hasen't been too many players who have been late picks that make it in the big league. This guy has some experience and the only ready made player with Ray who will play footy in 09.

David Rodan worked out pretty well for Port afterbeing the last pick in 2006.

Just been reading the papers, looks like Begly could be playing immediately freeing up Gram or Goddard. Looking forward to seeing the boys in action. How many weeks until the seasons starts?????? :p

agree this he's preferable over Carrol. We needed another back, - and as previously stated, if at times can free up goddard/gram that's a good thing! :thumbsu:

I reckon it's a good pick. Better than Carroll already and with more potential. Only young. Good athlete but panicks with the ball at times and can show sloppy disposal. We can work on those things (as we did with Gram).

With Dempster, Ray, Begley available as half-back-flankers, Leigh Fisher looking fit and keen to press his case, Raph finishing 08 well, Gilbert still developing as a dasher I think we'll have good cover and options across that line so that Gram, Goddard, even S.Fisher could push into the midfield rotations.

We did OK out of Gram and Attard, so why not try another defender cast off by the Lions.

us taking brisbane players should work out better than freo and their essendon rejects.

I've always thought he was a decent player and when you consider he's only played aussie rules for about 3 years he should have a fair bit of improvement left him.

A Collingwood fan on here that I know was pretty excited about them drafting him and was talking him up in glowing terms so I was pleasantly surprised when we got him.

We don't need these types of players, we need the cream of the draft, probs not going to happen so we need to make the most of the higher picks. Don't worry about players like him, Lynch and Heyne look to be beauties, lets hope they turn out to be 150+ game players. Also Armo, Steven, Macca and thesee guys also need to do some good things. Begley and these guys are just depth players really. Nothing special there.

Considering the very reason he was recruited was that he can slot immediately into our backline with the idea of releasing Gram, Goddard and Sam Fisher further up the field I would say the club view him as much more than a depth player.

I think we've got some great kids coming through but Colm will be straight into our best 22 and hopefully do the job that he's been recruited for.

I'm particularly excited about the prospect of Goddard spending more time in the middle... with the half back line depth it will be interesting to see if he rests forward, back or on the bench

Considering when Schneider moved it was reported he wanted to spend more time in the middle of the ground I can see the possibility for Goddard (if he is to move intot he midfield almost immediately) to rest forward and Schneider to move up.

Was great off the backline Colm pity we couldnt hold on to him. Would struggle to get into the backline at St. Kilda with the fisher boys. the clarke boys, Gram and hudghton. Would have to rely on injuries to get a game.

Hi Lion.
Leigh Fisher has been struggling for selection lately, X has never played in our backline, and while Raphael Clarke is often selected there it has pretty much been acknowleged that it is far from his best position. So he might get a look in.

Spot on SS.

Obviously it will depend on form and injuries but he was a recruited as a mature aged recruit (but with plenty of development left in him) with the intention to play in defence and he'll be given first crack at it.
