Cant stand AFL commentators, been mentioned before I know. McDermott and Campbell are ****e, and then I heard Tony Shaw. What do these guys add that one cant figure out for themself? I wish that didnt choose commentators on reputation or god knows what else they choose them on. Then theres channel 9 with Dermott, who does give some interesting insights, but portrays it in a way that comes across as a know all, too much of an ego as well, seems to be a competition with him and some other commentator whom I cant think of to reveal the different tactics of each team. And the 9 commentators seem to think Dennis Commetti is an absolute genius, but frankly I thnk he is average, I couldn:t care less if his grasp of the English language is good, its not what I want.

What I like is the SBS commentators for the world cup. Les Murray, Martin Tyler, Craig Foster et al. Fossie talks a lot, but he makes a lot of interesting points for me. I love the way they discuss the game, there seems to be know ego or competition amongst them or any ****y bull****e. When they tell a joke, they tell it and get on with it, they don:t discuss it for 5 minutes about how great it was. The commentating and talking of tactics seems to be far more intelligent and not stuck in some adolescent mindset like a lot of footy players seem to be dwelling in (which funnily enough \i do find amusing from time to time).

Maybe Im being harsh, but the mute button is great for the footy.

Maybe you guys can name some good commentators Im missing out on.

I dont mind the sunday footy show on 9. Sure it has a lot of ego and fun, but they at least discuss some things of interest.

The SBS guys are good, but it has got to the stage over the last couple of years that they put people off by going on and on and on and on and on and on and on about Brazil. One would think Brazil had won every single World Cup ever by listening to them.

FIFA giving the broadcasting rights to BBC and ITV in the UK, has been great for Australia TV as it has allowed SBS to sign up Martin Tyler for the World Cup. As always he has been a true proffesional and a pleasure to listen to.

Schlez is right about Fossie talking a lot, but I respect the guys passion ["That's as big as get's in Australian sport, I'm sorry but it is" , comment after Schwarter's second save against Uruguay and his YEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS after the win, and his "What do we have to do to get a decent referee" call after the Croatia game] and his knowledge. Yes *PAF, SBS do go about Brazil but if you watched last night's World Cup show, I think you saw the best of Fossie's knowledge of the game.

Les asked both Martin and Fossie about our next coach and Fossie was right when he said we should learn to play like Brazil but implement the French system of developing coaches and a playing system. As he pointed out, it took France 10 years to develop a technical system, players and a style of play that led France to win the World Cup. And that France are now developing a pool of coaches who are ready to take over their national team when Domenech finishes.

It's why Fossie as president of the players union, has brought out 98 French World Cup winning coach Aime Jacquet to address the Australian players and coaches for a 3 day seminar, even though it rubbed O'Neil and co. up the wrong way. So it's not all Brazil, Brazil, Brazil. But if your going to rabbit on about a team then Brazil ain't a bad example. Especially if it means more pictures of their samba dancing girlie groupies.:p

To SBS commentators and the team your World Cup coverage deserves :thumbsu: :thumbsu: :thumbsu: . And their Tour de France is brilliant as well.

Watched it live last night.
What odds for an Aussie Green and "Gold" this year? Actually if the odds are right I'll even place a bet on Evans/McEwen quinnella.

The World Cup has stuffed up my sleeping patterns so I have watched everynight so far. McEwen will win the Green jersey provided he doesn't have a crash. I don't think Evans will win the GC. I don't think he is good enough yet and I don't think he has the team. Hincapie has the experience and The Discovery Channel are still a strong team. I reckon he has a shot at being on the podium in Paris.

I'm looking forward to tonight's time trial to see if Rogers can do something special and take the Yellow jersey.

Not sure if you have seen these but a couple of good links to keep in touch with what's going on, even during the race are

http://www.letour.com/
http://www21.sbs.com.au/tdf/

and for some good info from people in the Oz cycling community and even some funny comments from novices go to the SBS Tour forum;

http://www8.sbs.com.au/sbsforum/viewforum.php?f=41

And seeing this thread is about commentators, I am going to do a Coodabeens and make a BS - Big Statement. Phil Liggett is the best sports broadcaster in English speaking world. The guy is brilliant and seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of every rider in the Tour and other cycling events.

Thankyou SBS for employing Phil for the Tour.
Thankyou Ch 7 for employing Phil during the Olympics, and
Thankyou Ch 10 for employing Phil during the Tour Down Under.
And his buddy Paul Sherwen goes alright as well.

And to use another Coodabeenism, I hope the new commentators for the Ch7's AFL coverage and plenty of the existing ones, "TAGHL", Take a Good Hard Look at Phil to improve their broadcasting skills and style.

Evans is only two minutes behind with a time trial out of the way. IMO he can go all the way. Go you good thing. :thumbsu:

i personally think martin tyler is the best commentator in the world, all sports included.
