Commentators - Bigger than the game???

Settled myself in for a game of football yesterday afternoon and ended up spending the afternoon listening to three egomaniacs rabbitting on about nothing.

The game in question was Nth Vs Adel so it was hardly a specatacle but seriously, after Adelaide kicked one goal, the ball was bounced, went down into the Kangas fwd line, was rebounded, contested on centre wing and BT and Jakovitch were still cocking on about some crap that nothing to do with the game. Seriously, not one players name was mentioned, not one mention of the passages of play. Rohan Smith on the side lines and Gerard healy were just as bad. Don't even start me on Dwayne Russell. God forbid that flog would ever talk about the game.

These guys are quick enough to fire into the umpires about being "bigger than the game" but how about they have a look at themselves first??

Commentators speak too much during games anyway. You'd think it's a horse race they way they over do it. If you watch sports like soccer and the American sports and they just commentate when necessary. They don't state the obvious but they are good at emphasising the emotion at certain points throughout the telecast. I know Aussie Rules is a faster sport with more action but they don't need to talk continuously.

Half of them know stuff all about what is going on. Two weeks ago on before the bounce they were discussing the pro's and con's of free agency and one of them brought up ROK as an example (I think it was Frawley). Basically a few of the others argued that free agency wouldn't have made a difference because ROK was contracted to Sydney anyway. One of them even said to Frawley "but he was contracted wasn't he?!". Frawley said something like "Yes but didn't want to play there". One of the guys on that panel is a journo so you think he would atleast know all of the facts.

Agreed after watching the crows v roos game as a neutral observer it is patetic the amount of bias Dwayne Russell shows towards adelaide. It seemed even Gerard Healy started taking pot-shots at Russell over his blatent barracking towards Adelaide.

Russell has to be the worst commentator doing the rounds atm for this exact reason, really was pathetic and you have to feel for the roos fans that not only watched their team defeated but had to put up with listening to that rubbish.

i have disliked Russel's commentary for a long time. Uses the same catch crys every week and brings up irrelevant facts that have nothing to do with the game.
He also says whenever a South Australian playing for a side not based in SA knows AAMI Stadium well as he played for a SANFL club. Cleary Russell forgets the SANFL dont play games there unless its the GF and most of the current crop of SA players have played sweet FA at AAMI

they may not be bigger than the game but they have a very high regard for their the own opinions. perhaps it goes with the gig.

yet, im sure i heard someone mention in the dogs/port game that burgoyne would be used to playing at TIO oval being a territory boy.

Well Lindsay is from that area so its very likely thats the case.
Peter played some footy up in the Territory before playing for Port Adelaide in the SANFL but i dont know how much footy he would have played or how familiar he is on that particular ground, especially considering he has been in SA playing with Port since 1995.

FTR I think TV commentators have become lazy. They know they don't have to describe the game as it can be seen on the TV so they revert to personal rants about BS topics.

From a Crows supporter point of view, Healy is far preferable to Russel.

I'd say he is one of the worst at going off topic. Most people seem to love his 'commetti-isms', but I think he's exhausting at times. When he calls he's fine, but he tries for the cheap laugh to often. Still miss Grybas as a caller, the most professional and level headed I can remember. Matthews and Buckley stick the point. In fact we only need special commentators. I wouldn't care if we got rid of game callers based on the current crop. This all in regards to TV viewing. I like in depth calling on radio because you need to paint the picture.
