I might be going with 2 premium mids.

Could be stupid, could be genius.

Right now I just don't want a back line meltdown. Getting 5 premiums starting there might pay off.

I like this thread and much of it is still relevant to 2012.

Premium backman scores fluctuate way more than mids.

How many backs averaged 100+ last season....Gibbs and he is now a mid.

Spend to much money on your backs at your own peril!

I think that would only work if you had maybe a sub-premium and a mid-pricer as well with some solid rookies.

But still, you'll be coming from a fair way back.

It could work if Greene, Kennedy and McDonald keep producing similar scores to Rd 1, but they're unlikely to score at those numbers every week. You'd also need Magner, Smith etc to also post very good numbers.

You know what is stupid? Non-constructive posts like yours.

I think 2 premiums is pushing it, you'll be lessening the amount of options you have for captaincy each week. 3 is a good amount I think.

However, I see the benefit of loading on your defenders. I've always been a huge advocate of picking more premiums in defence due to the difficulty of finding mid pricers in defence that are able to make the step into premium status. It's nice to lock and load your back line then search for value in other positions where solid mid pricers are more in abundance.

Okay okay

Constructive post - 2 premium mids means 6 rookie midfielders. Please tell me who these 6 rookie midfielders are because i cant count any more than 4 decent options without them being C/F and if thats the case refer to thread (Sheedy picks GWS team for round 1) to see that debate and the stupidity of it.

Personally i'm only playing 3-4 mid rookies. But if I had to pick 6 they'd be:
Shiel, Magner, McDonald for sure.
Then Coniglio (iffy cos of starting price)
Then maybe Clay Smith and Koby Stevens?

Anybody I'm missing?

Yeh mine would have been in this order

1. Magner
2. Jmac
3. C.Smith
4. Shiel
5. Clifton
6. Neale/K.Stevens (probably with the promoted couch) i would have had a C.F start in the mids because i now personally think the forward rookies are are possibly a greater strength than the midfield rookies.

Nah, it doesn't necessarily mean 6 rookies. He could have 2 mid pricers mixed in there. So essentially it would be 2 guns, 2 mid pricers and two rookies.
E.g.
Ablett, Swan, Caddy, Lucas, Kennedy and Magner.

Well than its ever more stupid, unless he flukes the midpricers and they become premiums than i dont see a reason to pick them.

Liam Shiels, Tom Rockliff and Jack Redden, and the people who picked them last year, say hello. Do you think they all fluked these starting picks or do you think a bit of research enabled him to appear in their lineup? There will be more again this year and the astute DT'ers will find them. However, your flock GnR mentality will not. I'll be making my experience more interesting by taking a few of these mid pricers and enjoying the bumpy ride. Happy Vanilla DT'ing in 2012. ;)

Anyone else think John McCarthy could be a good pickup this year for DT? He's scored pretty well in the pre-season and could probably rise to $350-390k if he continues his scoring pattern. I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on him just yet though...

Its a great point you make Budgie and i didnt question myself for posting that due to those names.

However for every one you get right you probably going to get one wrong. Look at the N.Jones, Masten as examples over the year and there have been many more.

It will be interesting to see who those players are. Melksham, Shuey, Cotchin, Sloane (i think hes the best one, but still quite expensive).

FWIW if 105+ is a premium in the midfield than im taking 3 players in the mids under that, that are above the 180k max rookie price. So technically i guess i could have 3 aswell.

Research is key with these players.

Good start for those that gambled on Cotchin. You've got to have a sneaky mid-pricer or two if you want a chance at the car, but they fail 90/100 times.

And luck!!!!!

Agree, but its not luck when you research hard and have some serious substance behind your decision. I have gone with some very unique players that sit in the midprice area.

They make the game so much more exciting and especially with myself this year going away early im hopeing i have picked a side that should start strong.

Having a small number of mid-pricers makes the game much more enjoyable. The satisfaction when you pull one off is great - even if you go into it knowing most fail.

This is the year to risk some mid-pricers IMO, so long as the GWS rookies don't score at Rd 1 level weekly.
