I thought there were an extraordinary number of great goals this year.
I would rate Lloyds about 20th. Not GOTY.

Lloyd's goal was good but not quite GOTY material. I reckon Motlop's from the boundary was the best.

Laughable decision..........McVeigh vs SYdney of Fletchers torpedo were much better from our club. There were another 5-6 at least that were better

Was a terrible decison but ah well nothing anyone can do about..

I would have had Fletchers, Motlops, Pearces, McVeighs, Daveys, and a few more ahead of it.

Not the end of the world though.

This was the panel that decided it:
Andrew Demetriou
Adrian Anderson
Kevin Bartlett
Rod Austin
Gerard Healy
Chris Mainwaring
Robert Walls
Mark Bickley

The other 2 finalists for GOTY were from Port... so it was pretty obvious that he was going to win it.

Everyone jumps up and down and says that anyone could have done that.

It was thought to do it that got him the award, similar to the Daniel Wells GOTY a few years ago.

Game on the line, you pick the ball up surrounded by Carlton players with your back to the goal, can anyone say that they would've thought to do that in a split second?

I would say that is probably why it was chosen, not for being spectacular, more that it was a very innovative goal, at a crucial time in the game.

Well done Lloydy. :thumbsu:

It was definitely not the worst Goal of the Year as someone suggested, it was a great goal. Just thought that this year there were an astonishing amount of great goals, e.g. Fev's one where he ran the Saints player down, turned around and kicked one from well outside 50. Surely that wasn't the best of them. Oh well, still a good goal.

Fevs one wasn't good. He tackled then kicked to an open goal square? ...wow

The chase down was great, and it wasn't just a short chip into an open goal square, it was a long kick that many players struggle to kick accurately. He didn't just tackle him on the spot, there was a fair bit of hard work before the tackle. Great goal IMO. Also if it needs to be innovative, Russell Robertson's was innovative, and brilliant as well. How he captured that ball was amazing, and a good finish to be able to kick the goal lying down.

I agree with the person who said it is often given to the sort of goals we see every week, just usually the most flukey. So what if someone kicks it from the boundary line, facing the wrong way whilst being tackled and under incredible pressure. It actually happens probably 15 times a season, and is usually a total fluke. How do you separate them?

Atleast Lloyd's was unique, incredible improvisation, well executed and amazing quick thinking under pressure. People say "I could have kicked that" and I probably could have as well. But no one else has. Lloyd was smart enough to make the goal out of limited opportunity so good on him.

Well done Lloydy.

ps Didaks goal on Friday night would have one for mine had it been in the season.

There is one more no one has mentioned, Des Headlands left foot check side on the run from the boundary line...exquisite. If that was his non-preferred side then it was one of the better goals you will EVER see (im not sure what his preferred side is).

I have heard a great deal of talkback on this tonight and read a few forums. Why has this decision led to personal attacks on Matty Lloyd??

Is he on the judging panel is he? No wonder he won, why wouldnt you vote for yourself?

The judges should be ashamed of themselves, that was a good goal but not GOTY worthy. i think daniel pearce should be driving back to adelaide from his grand final n the car!!

yes well done lloydy.
it was definitly the smartest goal.
but im not sure if it was the best.
my favorite would probably be Mark McVeighs (Rd.10)
or Daniel Jacksons. (rd.6?)

The only award Mathew Lloyd should have won is WORST captain of the year and BIG mouth of the year.

I have trade for Judd

Pick 6 and 23 and Lloyd to West Coast for Judd

piss off mate.
dont just come in an essendon forum and bag their captain.
your not the smartest one goin' round are ya?
