Most games I've seen Dow get sat on his arse at the bottom of a pack. Just not strong enough. Then he'll do a breakaway run from a pack and I can see a really bright future for him and us. Just not this year. Missed too much preseason.

Needs to learn how to kick. That set shot he had in the last was horrible. Im a fan of the guy, but its moments like that that kill the team.

Thought his second half was very good today. Yes, he's missing targets but he's hardly alone there. Some people are totally unrealistic when it comes to expectations on a guy who has played 30 games.

Yep. One thing which really stood out to me today was just how much he still looks like a kid out there body-wise, even compared to Walsh and Stoker. He'll need a few years to grow into a man's body, but when he does things will turn.

Edit: And he does need to learn to chase better. Why does he look twice as fast with ball in hand?

Needs to spend more time after training doing set shots. I don't understand how a professional sporting club don't have a goal kicking coach.

I remember Cripps was woeful with his set shots in his second year. So hopefully it improves.

he'll turn it around - he's a footballer - not an athlete - lucky to have him

I'm more concerned about his work ethic in general. Makes one straight line effort and that's all. And only offensively. Looks dynamic and explosive when he gets it... then looks like he's played 12 straight quarters when he doesn't have it or has to chase.
His chasing has always looked pathetic. He has the pace but doesn't use it when chasing the opposition, very much a one way runner.

You compare it to Stocker who's a similar type in his 3rd game and its a damning look. Stocker chases and tackles with intent.

I didn't really notice it last year, maybe because I'm looking for it now. almost every time we have a forward 50 turnover and the opposition runs it out take a look at the very edge of your screen and you'll see number 2 looking like he's approaching the finish line of a marathon.

Cripps isn't the greatest chaser either to be fair... but he does other things.

Unashamedly wanted Cerra. but warmed to Dow very quickly. Has some excellent traits, and plenty of potential. In an ideal world would have played most of the last 18 months in the twos, developing both his game and his body.

We (I) often lament the physical development of the kids in other teams being so much quicker than ours. Quite simply, we throw them in the deep end too quickly. Others have a managed load combining on field development with time in the gym, always moving forward. To bring this in to perspective, take a look at Sam Walsh and Bailey Smith. Smith help back and body allowed to build, now has seemingly an AFL body and escalating at a solid rate. Our own Waslshy, what a revelation. Good body, great work ethic and appetite for work. Unfortunately as we approach mid year, Walshy, while contributing fairly strongly has stalled somewhat. His body has leaned off noticeably as he "endures" his first season. Manage the kids ffs.

We have had to use them early because of the shallow list, however, tomorrow is more important than today. Manage them, build them, nurture them. Let's get them to optimum as quickly as possible and not stunt their growth.

Dow has been pumped up and thrown on the coalface way too soon. His lack of defensive work has gone unchallenged. Stocker is getting a baptism of the effects of a midfield not working defensively. This will stand him in good stead. Dow suffers no consequence for his brain fades and failures. He needs time in the twos. If we had the depth, it needs to be six weeks plus. We need to use Ed, JSOS and Gibbons through the guts and give him time.

I am confident that he will still be a good, if not great player. Let's give him every chance of getting there, not flog him to death physically and mentally please.

Exciting burst player. I really like what he brings to the team.

One question though, can someone down at the club please do something about his kicking for goal? It's been 10 weeks now and it's getting worse. I really wouldn't care if he did no other training all week other than practice his goal kicking. Surely that would be worth a try. Whatever they've done to date is definitely not working.

Smith wasn't held back though, he didn't do a full preseason due to recovery from an injury.

The one thing Smith/Walsh have in common just so happens to be the one thing anybody can do regardless of body = work hard.

That big last quarter htb free that SPS earnt yesterday? Watch the replay, he had given up, was jogging along about 10 metres behind to left of the saints ball carrier with no urgency at all... suddenly ball carrier goes sharp left and right in front of SPS so he puts on the jets and tackles him. Great tackle bla bla, but he only exerted himself because he saw guaranteed reward. A lot of our players are like that.

Around the ground at every contest, we either get a clean clearance first attempt or we lose the contest entirely. Why? Because we have about 5 guys on the field that make multiple/repeat efforts.

I wish I knew why. I think a lot of them can't see a way out and are ready to start again next year. Again watch SPS after Newman's 3rd straight turnover in last qtr, his body language said it all.
