jake king was moved out of defense because he was a liability there.
he was then moved out of the midfield yep you guessed because he failed there.
he was given a final chance in the forward line as a defensive player SHEESH hes a defensive sml forward and he played some decent games there in the second half of the season.
all this having regularly shown poor decision making, poor footskills, brain fades, and mediocrity.
So are you saying in the second half of the season he still displayed poor decision making, poor footskills, brain fades, and mediocrity?
yep you can praise em up all you like on the back of 10 or so games but at 27 yrs of age it doesnt make him a good afl player.
One of the latest trends sneaking into the game is drafting mature age people specific to your needs from a pool of players who were for various reasons overlooked the first time around. That’s what we did with a Coburg B&F winner but, rookied him.
Trouble was, pre-Dimma days, the aggression, the push up king, the angry macho little man syndrome, brain fades etc, ruled his footy and showed he was a clear cut individual. It now appears he has the ultimate vote of confidence as a “team” player by his peers.
Last year after consecutive suspensions, (im jus assuming this) but I would bet it was layed on the line that any more and his career is over.
So with a new coach, new game direction, new responsibilities, new position he didn’t put a foot wrong. Curbed his undisciplined aggression towards the man and focused more on the game. Constantly hit targets with precision, something he couldn’t do in his erratic days in the back half. Constantly shut down the better attacking half backs, and in later games developed into a great goal sneak. All this whilst managing to get a top 10 in the B&F with 15 games. And 2 of those were shit. So I affect a top 10 from 13 games.
clearly half a season is enough for you to proclaim a player.
Half a season not only from me, but clearly the entire Richmond coaching staff, football department and obviously players as they were the ones who voted him twice to Captain the side.
You say what else has he done, a great 2008 for starters, especially the first game against the Blues where he was almost BOG, but even in that game I still remember Walls saying “King is trying to kill anyone in a Carlton jumper“ That game showed what he was capable of, and he kept it up for the year with 2 more Brownlow votes (to add to the 2 from the Carlton game) but unfortunately 2009 suspension and injury has stuffed him. In lots of ways he was very lucky to have survived the chop, but has made the most of the reprieve. Good on him.
