It must be truly infuriating for other clubs around the league to watch Geelong just continually picking diamonds out of the rough like this. Unbelievable stuff, really. Metaphor is a little off, it's not like this kid was taken at pick 50, but so many at that depth never look this good this early on in their careers.

He has been so much better at AFL level than VFL from what I saw.
There must be more to it than simply Geelong recruiters doing their job well. Development at Geelong has to be a critical part of all of it.

When I first saw Gryan Miers play footy, I never would've imagined he would've been developed into the footballer he is today. It's pretty impressive from the Cats to keep churning out quality players. They get the best out of guys, for some reason, somehow.

They all talk about how good Nigel Lappin is in this space. I'm sure there are a lot of others, Brett Goodes works with the Indigenous boys. I reckon they keep the senior players that have a little bit left but could retire, like Touhy, Duncan, Stanley around to keep mentoring.

The shiny things always stand out, but a lot of people with potential just need time and support to become great at something. It doesn't always work out but I love how our club gives players a chance.

It's why I don't really respect a club like North being garbage, or Richmond gutting their list and gathering a bunch of top 20 draft picks, its the easy way out and disrespectful to your fans and players.

Along with Humphries and SDK (to a lesser degree Mullin), the defensive line rebuild is going superbly.

Jack Henry (26)
Zach Guthrie (26)
Sam De Koning (24)
Lawson Humphries (22)
Connor O'Sullivan (19)

Always build from the back up. Definitely the one area of our team where the players have their best footy in front of them. 2 x keys capable of playing on the next gen 200+cm key forwards, moving forward Henry can be freed up to play that in between role that Kolo has done over the years, Zuth the general, Humphries the silky ball user. Just need to find your baby eating lock down small defender to complete the set.

It's a very strong developing backline. Just missing a small fast lock down defender (Mullins?)

Mullin definitely starting to look the part the last couple of games. His upward trajectory is massive still, IMO. Could even be a mid in the future. Either way though, it's his role to lose now. 320+ minutes over 4 games, and only 4 goals conceded (0 against Pickett last night).

I prefer Mullin using his insane speed from HBF, like a new Wojo.

He's starting to. He made a comment about this after the Brisbane game, and you can see he's starting to play looser and back himself. Did it again last night in several passages. Also built like a brick sh*thouse too, for his height. Very good combo.

Was beaten by Pickett but no shame in that as he is a very good player. Signs are good though

Pickett started at 13 CBs and Mullin started at 0. I'm not sure they spent much time on each other.

He really wasn't. Pickett didn't kick a goal, and had very little impact on the game - despite his immense talent.

Mullin also attacked the other way, and also had 16 disposals of his own. Not to mention, Mullin was only matched up on him half the time, beacause Kozzie played through the midfield in big patches.

Regardless, his improvement is becoming very noticeable. Nice to have validation after my faith started to waver in the early rounds, haha.

I thought Mullin was matched up on Pickett when he was pushed forward. 3 shorts on goal on reduced forwardline minutes - lucky he butchered the ball. Not sure who Mullin was playing on outside of that though and it was not something I was tracking closely

Shades of Harry Taylor in his marking and spoiling, but more explosive and agile.

We have a potential superstar on our hands.
Admittedly he wasn't under extreme pressure at any stage. But his disposal by foot looks very fluent as well, both in terms of accuracy and in weighting the ball to his teammate's advantage.

Small sample size, of course. But it's staggering to be looking at a teenager with five games of senior experience and be seriously scratching your head to see the obvious weaknesses in his game.

The #14 appears to be in very safe hands.

I pulled out the app and checked both mullin and picketts footage.

Mullin had him basically the first quarter. He misjudged and gave too much space for an entry that Pickett marked, but that kick had to be perfect to make it happen and unfortunately it was. He got sucked up the ground once and left Pickett behind. He also got stuck in no man's land once in an outnumber so had to leave Pickett.

Pickett went into the middle for the 2nd quarter and Mullin didn't really see him after that other than coming off his man once to lay a tackle on pickett to get a htb his way. Pickett was picked up by Zuth and Humphries when he pushed forward in the 2nd half, mostly Zuth.

Saw Mullin laying defensive efforts on Melksham, Sharp, Henderson, and Fritsch for the 2nd onwards. I think most of his time on the night with went into fritsch which probably explains why he had such a good night.

He got into a lot of space to provide rebound and it didn't seem to hurt us which says something about Melbourne's small stocks when pickett isn't there.
