Can I just start by saying I love and will always love Malceski, even if, heaven forbid, he winds up wearing black and white. He's a Blood and always will be.

But I do think it's essential that he takes up his FA option for his own and the Swans' sake.

We can't afford to offer him a large and long contract. He can't afford not to accept a large and long contract if it is offered from elsewhere.

Elsewhere in this forum, we've talked about opportunities for Mitchell, Biggs, Hewitt, Robinson etc etc.

Those opportunities can't be given unless we free up space in the senior side and the best way to do that is to trade out or release good players at the top of their value. Everitt, Mumford, White are all examples where we have benefited from the departure of players at the height of their value.

McVeigh, Biggs, and Rampe are all players who can play the Malceski role effectively. It's all about value.

I don't think I could handle Mal going to Freo

Kirky was hard enough to take and he wasn't even playing

The day we picked up Buddy via free agency was the day the romance of keeping our much loved players until retirement died.
It is a new landscape in the AFL now when it comes to recruiting & trading players. What the Swans haven't been given credit for yet is for our ability to get our 'unwanted' players another contract elsewhere. Not that all are unwanted but if we were prepared to force Lamb into the draft to get nothing for him, then our club would be more than happy to make a trade so to not end up in too bad a position when done.

Thankfully players such as White, Everitt, Armstrong etc have been given contracts to continue in the game elsewhere. These are all players that have never been regulars in our senior team yet we did our best to let them earn a living from the game for a few more years. I believe it is part of our second to none player welfare system where we care about anyone leaving our club. We identify what we need from a player & if he is just playing good consistent footy in the NEAFL but doesn't look to have a role in our short term future, then we are not getting maximum value from such a player.
Whether it be via salary cap or performance.

Never ever forget & never question that it's match winners that take the largest percentage of a team's salary cap whether us fans think it's right or wrong.
Who are the known & proven match winners on our list right now?
We have 3.
Goodes, Buddy & Tippett. They can turn a game on it's head in minutes. They win games when fit. Even when unfit in Goodes case. That is why when you hear that a player like Dale Thomas is on 700K you scratch your head in disbelief. Even watching the Carlton Freo game last night, the only two players I saw on the ground that would be classified as match winners are Fyfe & Judd. Yes Judd is 30 but he turned the game Carlton's way until he hurt himself last night.

Now Josh Kennedy is fantastic for us but the style of game he plays, the in & under is not really that of a match winner. When he runs forward & becomes a dangerous goal kicking option regularly, then we have a match winner.

So we get back to our much loved Mal.
At 30, in a team that is carrying 3 match winners (should Goodes play on), Mal cannot command big money at our club. The club know this & I'm sure Mal knows this. The big players get the big bucks. The mid range players get the mid range bucks.
Malceski is a consistent mid range player that can command overs at a club that is desperate for someone with his penetrating kicking skills. That team is Melbourne or even Freo.
We can replace Mal in 2015 & we may also need to replace Shaw should he choose to retire. My guess is that Shaw will play on for peanuts just to have the opportunity for more success.

So it's true. The cost of having Buddy on our list has definitely changed the environment, but we have merely just reached this point as a club now. Other clubs will face the same situation but the difference is that we have the best culture in the land that will be able to overcome any short term grievances that some players may have. It will be interesting to see how clubs that have big personalities as figure heads will cope in the future with free agency as they were the ones looking forward to Free Agency the most as it was a way of bringing star players back to their powerful clubs from elsewhere.

Up yours 'Clive' !

I'm really happy for Laidler. He has been a bit of a journeyman, playing across 3 clubs at a young age in footballing terms, but has never let us down.

Rampe, Mal Shaw Smith and now Rohan, no spot for him. He would be cheap and good backup IF mal leaves, but currently he has been squeezed out.

What i mean is based on his performances Laidler was stiff to go out of the side for Rohan, he had played 16 games up to that point and we usually dont tinker with the backline unless a injury happens.

Oh, I agree he is a bit stiff, but Rohan showed he's capabale of filling that role and has a few more strings to his bow. Bad timing for Laids I guess. He may still come in depending on matchups.

Laidler was probably too good a deal to pass up.

Would still have been very very cheap cover and from his point of view being in a club that actually gives him a game and is flag ready for a few years yet why wouldn't he take what was on offer.

He was nearly flipping burgers last November (not knowing if he actually has a degree or trade of course - apologies if he does).

Realy happy he and Bird have signed. Shows faith in the current climate and set up of the club.

Mal is completely different simply because he can probably command more than what he is worth for longer elsewhere. A 2 year deal for Mal would be the most I would want the club to offer. If he is after three then thanks and so long, get the best mutual deal possible and go from there. After Roos basically tossed his playing group overboard on the weekend, which was a disgusting and cowardly thing for Roos to do, why the hell would you want to go there to finish your career though?

super happy Laids got another 2 years. id say its more likely cover for AJ than Mal but in any case he has slotted in great this year and weather or not he makes it back in the team this season i think it is safe to say at least 1 spot in defence will open up next season and he is first in line!

Roos is a very smart man, and good at manipulating opinions.

When he got to Melbourne, he was talking about how much of a rabble it was. Yes, true, but smart choice to set the bar low.

When Melbourne starting stringing some wins together, he accepted the title of messiah and basked in the glory.

And when they reverted back to shitty Melbourne he talked about how Rome wasn't built in a day, the mental demons were still there and would take years to rectify.

When they're winning, they're his group, when they're losing they're artefacts of a poorly run organisation.

He picks his position depending on which way the wind blows.

It's time to take responsibility Roos, you can't put yourself outside of the circle forever

Nobody knows for certain mate i find it strange how its never brought up in the media either.

Tippett 2 or 4 year deal anyone know for certain

I believe its 4 years. But the contract we drafted him in on was 2 years at a very high price with the extension for years 3 and 4 signed after the draft at a lower average $ per/year.

So either we can get out of the contract by him being out of contract of his cap hit will be less going forward which is funny in itself.

Cheers, just be shitty to somehow lose him

The 4 year 3.5m deal? yer that was the original deal that everyone was quoting on then it changed to the 2 years which enabled Tippo to price himself out of GWS range like Robbieando said.

There was also a KPI which was set in the contract that he had to play a number of games this was entirely to do with his concussion issues, after that there hasn't been a peep about any contract extensions beyond the 2 years he signed at the end of 2012.

The KPI which he couldn't meet due to the suspension let alone his knee, putting his concussion one side.

Main thing is, we have him next year on less money than we do this year. So bonus
