Hough is a much better player then Starcevich.

I think Starcevich is our TDK here.

Let’s get a player we need . If Steele didn’t accept 3/3 then take Starcevich wage bucket and go 3/4
I haven't heard a single peep that

A) Steele wants to leave
B) Saints want him to leave
C) We are after him

Now let's hypothetically say we are interested and we have or will inquire about him, well getting Starcevich won't prevent that from happening salary cap wise AND he still has to agree to want to come to us regardless.

If and buts are all well and good BUT it shouldn't stop us chasing someone who is considering joining us and IF Steele is open to the move i'm sure we'd look at it.

If he was an unrestriced free agent Brisbane would not have the right to match. He could just walk and they have to accept whatever the compo would be.

The fact that he is restricted means Brisbane can match any offer that comes in and force a team to trade for the player.

GWS did this with Jeremy Cameron when he defected to the Cats.
Yeah, I understand that but how does not diluting our free agency compo for Allen affect their ability to match?

I don't watch many Brisbane games and when I do I can't say I ever paid attention to him. But statistically, Cole is better than Starcevich in just about every area, including disposal efficiency & effective disposals. Clangers are identical.

So apart from Goroyals22 explaining that Starcevich is a better footballer purely on the grounds that I don't watch enough football, I would like to know how he's an upgrade on Cole?

He stops his man from impacting. That whole "defending" bit of the game.

Cole & Newton resigned for 1 year, Mccarthy for a further two on top of the one year left currently.

Barring injury newton should play a lot of footy for us next year

Starcevich is played as a lock down defender. He is directed to spoil or affect the contest, not rack up possessions. It's a sacrificial role for the team and these types of roles/players very rarely get much love or attention outside their own club.

Perfect example would be how we all felt about Hough when he was shutting down the comps best smalls even though no one else seemed to notice.

He is a better kick than Cole and much faster. He has served a role for Lions and they do not want to lose him however he has attributes that could see him play other roles. HBF or wing for instance.

Worse case scenario we get an incredibly good defender but i have a good feeling there is more to Brandon than Brisbane have been using him for.

Well there's the crux of it. For them to do that they'd be essentially telling the Lions you are losing this player and there is nothing you can do about it as you're bringing in free agents of your own.

Clearly they do not want to do this.

The fact he defends better, doesn’t fall over as much, can totally lockdown a small forward, is stronger one on one , actually kicks over distance rather than the 20 metre passes Cole is only capable for and actually
Moves the game forward rather than sideways…

Apart from that he is a permanent fixture in a premiership and top 4 side and wasn’t dropped this year from the worst side in afl history unlike Cole.

It would be interesting to see these numbers adjusted for F50 entries

Sorry I must be dense. We're not asking the AFL to say that they can't match our offer, just that if they don't match it won't dilute our compo for losing Allen yeah? They still have the option of matching and forcing a trade regardless of what our compensation is for Allen.
To me it seems like two separate things.

I’m with Hook461123 on this one. Our compensation for Allan and Brisbanes opportunity to match, are 2 different things

Just because our compensation isn’t impacted by any signings this doesn’t take away Brisbanes opportunity to match

I’m with you here, I don’t understand it either.

If our ‘pick 2 doesn’t get diluted’ request is approved, Brisbane are still able to match our offer and force a trade so I also don’t get how it is relevant.

Not dense at all. I admit the full specifications of what we have asked for and how it would apply have not been explained.

If i was to assume i would say there were two possible scenarios at play here.

The first is that if the AFL agreed we would put a price so high on Brandons head that the Lions could not afford to match.

The second is perhaps there was another free agent we were also looking at if the AFL gave us the green light that we have kept secret but buggered if i know who that is. Personally i'd be over the moon to throw 900k at Worpel just to mess with Hawks and Cats.

Does Starcevich bring anything to the club that's worthwhile? He always seemed to me as Brisbane's version of Tom Cole.

Same size, same games played, same position, both are "senior players with flag experience", statistically almost identical players.

We already have Tom Cole, do we want another Tom Cole?
Yes we do. But it has to be Tom Cole, not Starcevich. So in summary we need two Tom Cole’s. Finally someone else gets it

If Brisbane decide to increase their contract offer to Starcevich to anything close to ours he’ll remain a Lion.

We are also not going to lodge any FA paperwork for him so talk of matching a FA contract are irrelevant

Assuming Starcevich decides to leave it’ll be in both clubs best interest to broker a trade where we hold all the bargaining power. Remains to be seen how ruthless we are in leveraging that power

I'm very confident he's coming. Very rare for free agents to get this far into the year and still be un-signed.

As for being ruthless i don't think there will be any need. We have a good relationship with the Lions, besides you don't want to piss off the team that has the top 2 picks in the draft and you have a player no one would bat an eye lid at if you bid on with either pick.

Jesus, if Putin represents Brisbane that makes us Trump in the negotiation doesn't it. Talk a big game but fold like a cheap suit.
I think the suggestion was that we enlist Putin to threaten Brisbane with an unfortunate series of “accidents” like falling out of an airplane window if they don’t let us have Starcevich.

I'm wondering if the Starcevich offer is actually a bit of 4D chess.

Putting further pressure on Brisbane cap space to wiggle out another player.
He's an important player to their structure and this could be forcing them to pay full value and perhaps loosen their grip on someone else.
They will already be planning around that with Zac Bailey getting huge offers as a free agent. Doubt they budge much on their current offer.
