I’m fine with Starcevich offer.
He likely commands $700k at Brisbane. So any team getting him out of there needs to Pat at least $800k. Us offering an extra $100k over that to get him here is fine given how awful we are and also given we won’t be paying our full cap anyhow

What is a major concern though is that we pretty much only have 2 good AFL players who aren’t defenders - Waterman and Harley. Hewett and Shanahan not at that point yet. So we’re still going have diabolical forward line, mids and ruck.

= much much pain to come still next year
Yes but we are developing an a awesome defence and that’s where games are won and lost

I get this, it's a good way to look at it.

But as we've already pointed out today already, Starcevich is ranked as the 99th best General Defender.

Baker, McCarthy, GInbey, Cole, Duggan, Maric all rated higher.

On paper, statistically he's worse than even our middling players we're borderline about to delist (Cole).

There's plenty on here, including yourself that rate him regardless though, so it'll be interesting to see how it does end up playing out. Obviously i hope i'm well off the mark and get proven totally wrong, i'm clearly not a fan of the idea

With the Hawks being bundled out and the deathride ending I would normally say FINALLY our season is over...I thought the same thing this time last year, then a couple weeks later stories came out about us trading pick 3 for Liam Baker and we were in the wars all over again...stay strong, my brothers.

Monday we get told what our assistance package will be.

Just take sharp. Inside bull ball extractors will always have a place in this game.
Newcombe got shut down badly tonight and didn’t have any other strings to his bow.

Compare that to more balanced mids like Smith and Holmes who were quiet at various stages and still found a way to impact (Smith then tore the game to shreds in the second half).

Even someone like Atkins has plenty more going for him than just his defensive game and he was also picked up for nothing. We need an Atkins but I don’t love it for a top 2 pick.

Newcombe also carried the team through 2x away elimination finals.

The issue isn’t that a player like him is somewhat one dimensional, it’s the midfield mix (Worpel is similar plus no real line-breakers who aren’t part-time mids).

Our issue is the opposite. Reid/Hewett need a contested beast to join them (plus a decent ruck, although I’m bullish on Archer Reid).

I have to admit Duursma worries me as a top pick, I just get Morton Vibes, hopefully I’m wrong and he’s like ends up being similar to the best of the Selwood boys.
Anyway what picks we take to the draft and who we actually choose is far from set in stone.
Unlike DS I’ll be very happy if Starcevich ends up in a WC jumper next year.
I still have vivid memories of the massive 3 inch hard on he had for Sheldrick, he does get excited about things come draft period sometimes.

Very interested to see the combine test results comparisons between Cody Curtin and CDT

Despite me being a Curts fan and a CDT anti fan, i daresay CDT will beat him in most areas.

Much more of an athlete than big boy Cody.

Hence why one is expected go top 5, the other top 30-50

After the re-signings announced yesterday, five players remain uncontracted:

• Allen and Chesser have announced their intentions to depart
• Cripps has reportedly been offered a new contract but no announcement yet
• Champion and Livingstone (both Cat B rookies) are in limbo, presumably waiting on the AFL’s decision on draft assistance/additional list spots. It’s expected Champion will be given a new contract but Livingstone’s status is unclear

Many people, myself included, thought that Barnett might be delisted and paid out with a year to run on his contract. That seems unlikely now as you’d think he would have been informed to allow him to find another club although he’s still a candidate to be delisted and added back to the rookie list to open up a senior list spot if necessary

Yeah I acknowledged we need someone like him but Tom Atkins and Newcombe were both undrafted players. If we want one of those theres plenty around.

If Sharp has the ceiling of Tom Green or Dunkley then absolutely. But I feel like you go highest ceiling with top 2 picks and if they bust they bust.

Curtin's a big fat full forward like Scotty Cummings, he ain't winning jack shit at any athletic competition, unless eating is involved.
Can we get him ripped and teach him to run through people like Troy Wilson? If we're going to be shit let's at least make it fun

Well there's the crux of it. For them to do that they'd be essentially telling the Lions you are losing this player and there is nothing you can do about it as you're bringing in free agents of your own.

Clearly they do not want to do this.
But Brisbane can do something . Starcivich is a restricted free agent and Brisbane can match and force a trade .

I doubt Brisbane are willing to match

I see him as a Fogarty type, leading style steamroller. Maybe a couple of preseasons and our head of performance going to work on diet and recovery will see him shed the fat. Someone will take a chance on him given his good hands and clean goal kicking.

I'm hoping that hall becomes our atkins or wilem drew type .

Hall clearly doesn't have the attacking weapons of others but has that toughness and drive to go head to head with opposition ball winners and either beat them to the ball or blanket their influence

If barnett is delisted could anther team poach him for nothing ?

Good result for everyone

Could see port taking him

I don't watch many Brisbane games and when I do I can't say I ever paid attention to him. But statistically, Cole is better than Starcevich in just about every area, including disposal efficiency & effective disposals. Clangers are identical.

So apart from Goroyals22 explaining that Starcevich is a better footballer purely on the grounds that I don't watch enough football, I would like to know how he's an upgrade on Cole?

You have left out the most important stat, how many goals have they had scored on them.
