The alarm bells were going off at max volume when McKay got North pick 3, but the AFL danced around with their fingers in the ears. Allen who is a far superior player getting the Eagles pick 2. Quick. Review the system!

they did say it would be after Allen compo (but who knows in background). To be honest it's not just McKay. Battle as well and compensation for Draper this year.

I think it makes sense that compensation comes after those teams that missed the finals - after Allen of course.

Ben Mackay and North Melbourne say hello.

Just read the article and it is heavily focussed on the 'bottom clubs' rorting the system. No mention of the receiving clubs getting a selected player, without cost above paying wages - no loss of their picks.

As someone else said AFL making half arsed decisions on the run.

Yep, The DVI was only changed after the Gold Coast plunder 2 seasons ago. And even then, they waited another year because of Carlton & Richmond banking late picks to take advantage of the clear rorting of the system

Argh yes indeed the DVI.

Deceitful Victorian Intervention

Various posters on the essendon board seem interested in Chesser and Bazzo - both I think deserve another year, but only if the other option is delisting, completely happy to trade them. What would their likely value be? A second? Chesser, Bazzo, and hawks r1 for bombers' lowest r1?

To be honest I doubt you get much more than a late third or fourth rounder for either.

I think we wish them the best and take a future 3rd for our future 4th.

These deals are more about giving the players another go rather then a benefit to us.

I really like the idea of Curnow to GC.

GC: Lose Walter, Pick 8, Receive Curnow, Pick 2, 14 ~20
Carlton: Lose Curnow, Get 2 and Bailey Williams
WCE: Give 2, 14, ~20, Bailey Williams. Receive 8 & Walter

WCE Still have pick 1 and 8 and are holding hawks second just in case someone bids on an NGA before that pick or there's a massive slider.

Secondary approach us for pick 1. Pick 6 & future first for pick 1.

Go to the draft with 6,8. Miss out on Lindsay and Cumming imo and Sharp probably still there as whoever takes the punt early as a vic club will likely prefer the size and Victorian player in Greeves.

So it really comes down to who people would want in either scenario but it would certainly allow WCE to start developing Archer Reid as a ruck or KPD and gives a next gen forward for as soon as next year.

Still end up with 2 high end first rounders next year as well plus NGA and end up with what ended up being pick 1 and 3 in 2023. Which would mean 2 first round picks in 22,23,25,26 plus a traded in top 3 pick player to replace someone we're already losing.

We lose pick 2, 14, 20 and Bailey.

Get pick 8 and Walter.

That is way over the top for 8 that slides to 12 and Walter. Plus we don't bid on their academy kids.

Take out 14

And add Davies from the Suns and we'd consider it.

2, 20 plus Bailey

For 8, Walters and Davies.

And we don't bid on their kids.

The more I think, the more I think it’s smart to try use our probable off season relationship with the Queensland teams to pry off some of their more experienced players that they might want off their books. Ideally a midfielder or outside midfielder.

Tunstill and Dev cheap would add depth.

Tunstill straight onto the wing.

Dev inside rotation / pressure HHF / wing rotations.

Years of Victorian clubs cashing in compo picks? No worries.
West Coast might snag pick 2 for Oscar Allen?
Sound the alarms. Launch the review. Secure the Victorian draft order.

Clearly, free agency was never broken… until a non-Vic club found the manual.

This league is so corrupt

I mean Chesser was a Pie Man special, and where does the Pie Man currently eat his pies....

Coincidence/conspiracy theories aside the FA compensation system is well overdue for a review

As an equalisation measure it has failed with the flow of players from low clubs to contending clubs outweighing the reverse. Successful clubs have been able to sell a chance at a flag over dollars to players at struggling clubs without having to give up any trade/draft capital.

And the compensation formula often values a player well above their true worth which compromises the draft and impacts the 16 other clubs.

At a minimum, the compensation should start at pick 11 or better still be excluded from R1

Next year right....

It’s too late to change it for this year not least because the AFL will see Allen generating pick 2 as a convenient way to deny us any priority pick we may or may not apply for

And in all honesty, any changes should only be introduced after the current CBA ends in 2027

Alternatively, just change the total compensation system, so that you only get compensation if you lose a player to a team higher than you, and only lose it if you bring in a player from a team lower.

So for example - ninth place loses someone to eighth, compo pick. Ninth loses someone to tenth, no compo.

Ninth loses someone to eighth but brings in someone from tenth, diluted compo. Ninth loses someone to eighth and bring in someone from seventh, same compo as just losing someone.

Would help lower teams as it avoids a situation where they have plenty of money, but can't bring in a free agent because they're losing one. So for example, us this year could lose Allen, bring in Starcevic, and still get pick 2 compo. No compo for Brisbane though as they lost their player to a lower team (and also brought someone in from a lower team).

This is the AFL we're talking about here....you know they're capable of changing it and giving us two weeks notice

Watch the vic media eponymously name it the Oscar Allen rule.

Laughable that the AFL come out with this reasoning when it’s us asking for picks.

On precedence we should be getting the same first rounders North got for basically an identical record over 4 years.

I don’t necessarily mind not getting handouts but I do if other teams are whilst we get some bullshit reason as to why we can’t.

If they’re going to run with this then Laura Kane should be sacked on the spot for collusion with her old side.
