Gallop - ""We expect these days a lot of people are going to sample all the codes, but the people we love are the people who don't go to anything else but rugby league, become season ticket-holders, talk about it over the water cooler every day and come up to you in the summer and say, 'Can't wait for the footy to start'.""

Well i chat to people here at work (Mostly those from the Northern States) almost every day about the weekends NRL games. I also have season tickets to the Storm and Wests Tigers. This year have spent more than a grand on new jerseys. Have only missed one Storm game so far this season AND have flown to Sydney 4 times already for games and still have two more trips (Sydney 2nd last round, GC last round) to come.

Yet Gallop's saying I'm not his preferred type of supporter simply because I also happen to quite passionately support Richmond?!

Get the ____ outta here.
You have mis-interpreted what Gallop was saying.

Agree. Once you come to the understanding that games having different skill sets than your favourite game doesn't neccesarily mean those games are bad ... You have no problem enjoying multiple sports.

Two points here .
1. Just because you appreciate the different skill sets for different sports
doesn't automatically mean that you derive a lot of entertainment from it .
There are any number of skillful sports that don't have large spectator bases .
These are the sports that you occassionally watch on TV . Or you may even
play a certain sport but don't find it attractive to watch .
2. I used to be an avid sports follower , but as I became more involved with on particular sport there was the time to physically indulge in others .In fact it is not physically possible to watch all the Australian Football that is around .
You have live AFL ,WAFL ,SFL , Amateurs , juniors , Masters and womens plus AFL and WAFL TV .

Agree LD (but it helps when you have lived in more than 1 state)

Love Cricket, AFL, Union & League and will watch pretty much anything with a ball where they keep score - soccer, NFL, netball, baseball. Only ball sport I don't really get is basketball.

Can never understand people who only watch 1 or 2 sports. the more the better

Most people only have enough time in their lives to support 1 sport at any one time. For me: Winter: Footy, Summer: Cricket. Sometimes they overlap, but hey, i'm adaptable.

I didn't say you should follow every sport there is going.

Yes, you did.

any true self-respecting sports fan will follow (obvioulsy to varying degrees) the elite professional team from any code who has a professional team bearing the name of your town/city/state/country.

Of course some sports appeal to you more than others.

Of course. So why say:

any true self-respecting sports fan will follow (obvioulsy to varying degrees) the elite professional team from any code who has a professional team bearing the name of your town/city/state/country.

It's fine to exercise your own discretion not to follow the Melbourne Storm, but then you go on and actively promote your dislike of RL with passion.

I do no such thing. I go on to explain why i wouldn't support the Storm. I never even mentioned RL from then on. Please take the time to actually read the post.

And there is no passion in my dislike for the Storm. Passion would require interest as a first step.

You see, if you exercised your discretion not to follow the Melbourne Storm and all things RL dispassionately that would be fine, but you actively dislike it with passion. This is what makes you a anti-RL and pro-AFL troll.

I have a simple challenge for you. Dig up one quote I have made here which condemns me as a "anti-RL and pro-AFL troll". Go on, back up your pathetic little allegations.

I am dispassionate towards the NRL. That's why i have often asked that RL related threads be removed from this board, as they are nothing buy a haven for the anti-brigades and a distracting from the topic.

The codes' administrators feed off and fuel these divisions. They have to, they are big businesses competing for crowds, TV ratings, sponsorships, local/State government support and for commercial ventures - often directly against each other. It will always be the same and to suggest we are moving to an era where the divisions will be lessened, or even removed, is just not right. The codes will make sure it doesn't happen.

Aussie Rules fans tend to be the most broad minded of all footy fans when it comes to other codes (maybe union though I'm yet to meet him:p), despite what you read here. If you don't believe me you should take a visit to a soccer or Rugby League forum.

The World Game & Sydney FC Unlimited forums are just as idiotic and myopic in their attitudes towards AFL and many are on here towards football.

Actually the Sydney FC forum takes the cake for true myopia. A thread about the Sydney Kings dying :( was turned into "This is a victory for football" by quite a few people.

Took bad for people like me who followed the Sydney Kings before many of them ever set foot in an Australian football stadium.

JF
PS:- I'm getting hammered on SFCU for refusing to go to Sydney because the Swans-Geelong & Sydney FC-Melbourne Victory games are on the same night & I cannot seriously enjoy one game without being at the other.

i dont know ...there is always going to be a stigma which i feel the codes number crunchers generate.... its about hooking a fans dollar or what ad's you can get them to watch during a telecast.

Although i never really ever felt like bagging anyone for supporting rugby and even enjoyed it at P.E in school, i was kinda surprised when i went to QLD how much shit i coped about being an AFL follower....

I too would probably stay home if both Geelong and the Wallabies were playing on the same night (with exceptions like finals etc). I dont blame you. It means you are putting all your money on one being an absolute thriller, when it could be that you are missing a match of the year elsewhere.

Tiny hint: This is an Aussie Rules forum, where 'football' means Aussie Rules. Just as on SFCU, 'football' refers to soccer. You seems like a very open-minded person.
