Cornes set to return this week

By Katrina Gill 5:05 PM Mon 07 July, 2008

PORT Adelaide coach Mark Williams expects star utility Chad Cornes to be available for Saturday night’s clash with North Melbourne at AAMI Stadium.
Cornes, who missed the round 14 game in Darwin, limped into the second break of the season with separate knee, calf and finger injuries, but Williams, despite adding a shoulder complaint to the list, said the dual All-Australian should be fit to resume this week.
“Watching him down there now, he looks all right, so I would think he’d be available,” Williams said at training on Monday.
“Chad is certainly in need of some sort of operation. His shoulder and his knee probably both need operations. They are both minor things, but they’ll take four or five weeks to get over.
“There’s no real benefit for Chad [to have those operations now]. It’s about making sure there is enough time, plus a little bit more, for him to be ready for the pre-season and there will be.”
The football department, as always, conducted a review over the bye week and came up with a handful of changes to be implemented in the remaining eight rounds.
Williams said the coaching and playing groups had combined to discuss going quicker and more direct inside forward 50m and also being more defensive at the stoppages.
The Power will attempt to improve the number of goals scored from kick-outs and will even alter their training days, starting in two weeks.
Williams said the players had also given feedback on how and when messages from the coaches are relayed to the group.
“I would think that 80-90 per cent of everything everyone is doing is right,” Williams said.
“We’ve been in most games for three quarters. We always challenge ourselves personally and collectively and I don’t divorce myself or the other coaches from any of the changes because we’re all involved. We understand that all the feedback given by everyone is with the aim of making us better.”
Williams reaffirmed his commitment to playing the club’s youth, which this week could include in-form forward Adam Cockshell. More experienced players Jacob Surjan and Michael Wilson could also come into consideration for the clash with North Melbourne. Regardless of the line-up, Williams said the objective had not changed.
“We’re very much focused on winning this week and getting a lot out of the season,” he said.

This is great news!
I have held onto him and not had to have a doughnut in the backline (thanks Wonaeamirri).
Makes me laugh at the 8577 DTers who got rid of him last round.
Now for the Chad to get back into 90 plus scores for the rest of the season.

In other words he will play, but not for long.

He might get put on the shelf come round 21-22. So keep a trade or 2 up your sleeves for then.

All we need to do is get Chad a new

  • Finger
  • Knee
  • Shoulder
  • Calf
Then he's set:thumbsu:

This interview was played on 10 news, except they cut out the part where hes going to play this week... they just played this part ->

Misleading much? Stupid channel 10.

The impression that I get from that is that it's probably best to sell him while he still has a semblance of value.

Even an injured or out of form Chad should easily score 70 ppw.
Considering his current price youd be silly not to hold onto him.

Unless you have money in the bank and trades to blow even if he only plays 2-3 more games I would expect his price to rise should he have 2 decent scores (90+).

I'll be holding onto him, as long as port have a shot at the finals I cannot see them pulling Chad Cornes. If they get to the point where finals are not possible I expect they will then consider the surgery. SO heres to hoping Port win the next couple of games ;) Keep the chad alive!

LOL :D:thumbsu:

Hahaha,
As much as I hate Port, and 3 games out of the 8 seems like alot at this point its really still possible..
Unlikely but entirely possible.

Unlikle Melbourne, Fremantle and West Coast who would need a massive amount of luck and to win 8 out of 8 to stand a chance.

8 games left, but it's an interesting run home... I reckon Port will be lucky to win 3 games for the rest of the season!

LOL. I traded him last round, saved a 0, and he'll have surgery very soon (i'd give him 2 more matches maximum).

Kept him in SC, but only due to my trade level... lol.

I didn't realise that you were best friends with the Port Adelaide doctor.

How people can predict how many games Chad has left in him is ridiculous. I am hoping he plays the rest of the season but time will tell.

This is a bloke who was willing to chop off a finger to keep playing the season out.

i hate 10 aswell! After hearing the report on 10, i logged on to afl.com.au to trade chad and i was lucky enough to see a headline saying cornes was a chance to play! lucky me

Dont Jinx it.
Ive got one bloody trade left and Myers, Cornes and Proud in my backline and I have Cox and Porpleysia which may or maynot require a trade.

Im pretty much fked unless the three above play out the season. Hopefully myers will come back to cover my bench for finals aswell
