Something dark, stupid, and dangerous is brewing in Britain. Isn’t it always, these days? This time, it’s not Brexit. It’s a third wave of Covid. And this one is going to be bad — in many ways, worse than the first two. Brexit Britain, the dumbest country on earth, is about to teach the world what a third wave of Covid looks like, and how damaging it can really be.

Let’s begin with some numbers — grim and foreboding one. Covid cases are on the rise in Britain again. But not just any Covid cases. Cases of the “Delta” variant. That’s the one which originated in India. The Delta variant is now the dominant strain in Britain, accounting for 90% of new cases. And cases are doubling about every week. There are 8,000 new cases today. Doesn’t sound like a lot. But in a month, at the current “R,” or rate of doubling, that’s going to be 64,000. And in six weeks, it’s going to 256,000.

That’s how fast a third wave can erupt. Britain seems to have forgotten that the world is dealing with a pandemic, a thing which obeys laws of exponential growth.

But that’s just the beginning. The Delta variant is worse than the original one. A lot worse. Twice as many patients end up hospitalized. It’s worse among young people and the already ill, and of course the elderly too — it hits everyone harder.

If you think that’s bad, consider this. 30% of deaths from the Delta variant were among the fully vaccinated. What does that tell us? The Delta variant is vaccine resistant. It’s the first variant to really challenge the vaccines we already have — but it won’t be the last.

How vaccine resistant is it? Two doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine — which is the one most Brits have got — is 60% effective again the Delta variant. Most people in the UK who are vaccinated still only have one dose.

Ha ha - big furore here after the cops accessed the WA Covid app database when investigating a high profile murder case; government red faced that the privacy of the app can't be guaranteed, cops saying they did nothing wrong, new legislation being rushed through parliament as we speak to close this loophole.

The funny thing about this is that the murder case the cops were investigating was the sniper shooting of a bikie boss at the Speedway track - I'm sure the assassin did the right thing and scanned in with the app before lining up his shot

So when there's considerable amount of community transmission you honestly think masks are pointless?

Well from first hand watchsperience there are a hell of a lot of "alternative pizza" delivery drivers in the eastern suburbs of Sydney.

As reported 16 June 2021 (15 June 2021 data):

So far, 6,083,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been delivered across Australia (Aust Govt DoH/ covidlive websites).

Change from previous day: 152,000

Australia's population is about 25.8mill, requiring about 51.6mill doses for completion of the dual dose program.

Current % to completion:
(6.08/51.6) x 100 = 11.8%
(Previous Day: 11.5%)
---------------------
Note 1:
If <16yo veto on vaccination persists (current Pfizer; about 22.1% or 5.7mill Australians) then about 40.2mill doses are required and not 51.6mill.
Current % to completion: 15.1%

Note 2:
If <12yo veto on vaccination is accepted (projected Pfizer; about 16.9% or 4.4mill Australians) then about 42.8mill doses are required and not 51.6mill.
Current % to completion: 14.2%

everyone is drowning in not quite real time movement data, covid databases or no. traffic cams and "data governance" much?

imagine the question really asked was "is this an act from within a club, or from the outside where it might precipitate more violence with external risks?"

never mind identifying the sniper if that's not really what you care about the most (privately). understanding who of interest is hanging out where and when, and was it "typical", are a few bits of intermediate data that might help an observer infer why what happened happened.

more recently: see how the FBI has arrested precisely no one domestically post the brilliant Ironside op because they're not allowed to surveill their own. well, post previous scandals at other "listening" orgs. they can build the hardware but they can't use it because rule of law, ironies abound there but imagine what everyone else is doing?

as my old ceo said in the roaring '90s "you already don't have any privacy, get over it". shame he became a trump fundraiser two decades later.

anyway. data is like a virus, everyone has it, everyone is catching it ;)

The AstraZeneca vaccine should now only be given to those aged 60 and above, the chief immunisation body has reportedly told the government.

Nine News and the ABC this morning reports that the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) made the recommendation, after a 52-year-old woman died from a brain clot last week.
The recommendation was given to the government yesterday, according to Nine, but no official decision has yet been made.
It’s understood a national cabinet meeting could be held this morning to discuss the issue.
The Health Minister Greg Hunt is expected to hold a press conference early this afternoon.
