Feel sorry for the people in Melbourne who have been doing the right thing
It pains me a lot.

Done all the right things and my fiance and I based ourselves on the Mornington Peninsula and have avoided get together's with anyone, aside from virtual (Zoom) dinners and the like. Have seen it first hand when you go for a walk around Portsea or up to the shops for supplies in Sorrento the changing attitudes and to be honest, it is a disgrace that people just couldn't do the right things for a month or two, which has now led up back to square one.

I will say this, the borders should've been closed long before they were and tougher restrictions imposed earlier, but how and why Dopey Andrews lifted restrictions when he did has me gobsmacked. And he wonders why we are back in the position we are in reopening gyms, bars, pubs shopping centres etc.

Just beggars belief.

Couldn't agree more! Apart from driving up to see mum every 3-4wks, we've kept our heads down and followed the rules..

It angers me more now because I cant go to see mum, I'm not allowed to drive out of melbourne. I've had to ring around and organise for a friend of my daughter to get things for mum that I usually take up there for her......it is also mums 89th birthday during the lockdown but I cant be with her for it....it could be her last one but hey, I'm in lockdown thanks to these selfish, irresponsible bloody people!

To say I'm not happy is an understatement.

What caused it to kick off again ?

I’ve read reports that the hotel lockdown of returned travellers was a big source.

The security guards were mingling Cough sex cough with returnees, got COVID and shared it around.

Melbournites - is that true?

Even if it was I’m sure it was more than that.

The psychological change stemmed from the BLM protests which were about the dumbest thing to do in the middle of a pandemic but the muted warnings from Government gave many people the impression that it was all cool. All downhill from there.

This is a disaster for Victoria , the inside gossip is that there are well over 30 known clusters,at present. Many businesses will never recover from the double whammy. Ironically those most affected will be Andrews constituents and supporters.

Nothing can be done now but to suck it up and learn this time.

The usual suspects say the BLM protests, but there's no evidence of that whatsoever. Truth is no-one knows for certain yet.
Sorry buddy . That's insane . Have a look at any graphs here and o/s plotting the growth in numbers . It's just not sensible to say that thousands can congregate in the middle of a pandemic and not expect consequences.

Victoria already had community transmissions and therein lies the problem

Can you please post a source that links the protests to the rise in cases we're seeing right now? Sounds like an interesting read.

Does any of our Lions supporting Melbourne residing brothers/sisters know the stats for how many of those tested have been positive, asymptomatic, hospitalised and in ICU?

There were BLM protests in other states as well

What caused it to kick off again ?

A lot of factors no doubt.

Relatively high population density compared to most other states. Especially in the hot spot spot suburbs i.e. large family units.

Crappy winter climate / flu season.

People ignoring social distancing & personal hygiene recommendations. (Do you think the population of any other state are any different though?)

Daniel Andrews refusing to let the army in to handle the quarantine hotels. Whether it was because a union put the squeeze on him (as claimed by Jeff Kennett), or because the army comes under federal jurisdiction rather than state control who knows, but known outbreaks were a result of quarantine protocols being broken by staff & then spreading into the community.

I'm not a Dan fan, so probably biased, but think he has a bit of responsibility for the recent outbreaks. Up until we started rolling the lockdowns back too early I thought it had been managed pretty well though.

If it doesn't spread from gatherings of thousands of people in all different locations all over Australia, why the need to ban large gatherings?

I'm confused although I am age challenged and creeping up on senility.

To all of the Lions fans in Victoria, especially those in the lockdown areas, stay safe! I am thinking of you and hoping that the boys can smash Geelong on Thursday to put a smile on your faces for awhile. Unfortunately you wont be able to brag at work but could always wear Lions gear to any videoconferencing calls.

Yes , but with stronger repercussions and less community transmission at the time.

Sorry this graph is a bit big , but it's reasonably self evident . Mirrors what has happened in many US states as well.

I don't see how you can preach social distancing day in and day out and then just let people congregate in their tens of thousands in Melbourne's case , chanting over each other , without any consequences.

I'm sympathetic to BLM but allowing these marches to go ahead was fairly gutless by many Governments and sent out the wrong message, particularly to younger people.

It's done now , but every one of the epidemiologists I've been following since before the outbreak were dismayed at these marches. The majority of them are socially conscious progressive thinkers.

It's true. Security guard(s) sharing smoko with them, yes having sex with them, etc. and then they went home and had family gatherings with multiple families. It's what created the 10 postcode lock down last week.

Massive consequences for Vic clubs .

Could we see a GF at the Gabba ?

You could possibly find some of the information here. Everything except for asymptotic cases.

On another note. So disappointed with people right now. Couldn't be arsed cooking so dropped into my local supermarket to grab a pack of pies & a bottle of wine (because, y'know, my body is a temple...)

No pasta left, the meat section was completely stripped bare. It was only three months ago that we went through the same shit, where we went into stage 3 lockdown but everyone could go to the shops as often as they wanted & there was no need to panic buy anything.

There are disabled / elderly people that can only shop with a care giver one day a week. Vulnerable people that live paycheck to paycheck or welfare payment etc that can't just do a shop whenever.

Makes me sad & angry, let's call it Sangry!, that people are so selfish.

Hopefully the supermarkets have been preparing for this much like the AFL has been & logistics for the replacement of in demand items is better this time.

It's a good site and the one I have bookmarked for my daily Covid info.

There are however one or two things that puzzle me.

There are often # and * symbols against the Daily New Cases that always reduce the "new" cases to below the raw number.
For example, today the raw number of New Cases for Victoria was reported as 191 (and that was the number all over the News)

But then under the # footnote it says

#191 new cases, 27 reclassified

So this site reduces the New Cases to 164

...and I have no idea what "reclassified" means

Similarly, this site also frequently has * against new cases which means "previous excluded"

So today for NSW, there were 7 new cases (all returned travellers) but *3 previous excluded so they come up with a net number of 4

Then there are the daily pressers by whoever gets the honour and I keep hearing

"A new cases, B from Routine testing, C from Community Transmission and D Under Investigation"

I kind of get D but I'm still no wiser what the difference between C and D is???

From chatting to people who work at them they seem pretty on the ball - today was tough because it was hard to predict such a sudden surge. It's disappointing that it's tough for people to get basics again but I'd be surprised if it lasted as long as last time.

Perhaps the psychology of witnessing tens of thousands of protesters standing basically shoulder to shoulder created a sense of complacency , if not anger among the general population.

Optics and all that.

And the latest official update that I can remember on the number of BLM attendees that subsequently tested positive was THREE only. That was weeks ago

So if that's really the case, can you blame J Citizen for getting a little complacent or even rebellious?

I've done this before in this thread so I don't want to get into another debate on the topic.

I'll close the door on the way out

"Victoria has recorded 191 new cases of coronavirus since yesterday, with the total number of cases now at 2,824.

The overall total has increased by 164, after 27 cases were reclassified – largely due to duplication."
