I think it is pretty clear that there are data and projections that our politicians are working off that they are choosing not to make public. Given the way they have scaled up measures so rapidly it does give you the sense that they are a bit panicked by it. We have gone from the chief medical officer telling us they wanted sustainable measures that could be kept in place for 6 months plus to close to full lockdown in a couple of days.

I don't think the AFL would have plucked May 31st as the resumption date out of the air. That would be based on what the Government has advised them about their plans. Hopefully, the measures that have been in place so far will have had an impact we can see in the data over the next week or two. You are right about full lockdown being an economic disaster.

Not sure i understand where your going with this? The economy can be fixed, once people die its curtains. People recovered from the great depression. Those 1000 people dying a day in italy are gone forever.

That would be from approximately 30 million infections. The numbers are large but the mortality rate much lower than Covid 19. The doctors in Italy deal with seasonal flu every year as well and not one of them would tell you Covid 19 is better.

I'm not saying it's better or worse, I'm asking why are we panicking and instigating all these measures for one virus, and totally ignoring another which at this stage is affecting 10-12 times more people?

It is a valid question. I am certainly getting the impression that the politicians are acting in a way that could be construed as panic with these latest announcements. The measures that had been implemented over the last week or so had probably reduced social interaction in Australia by 60% to 70% and Dan Andrews at least doesn't think that is enough.

It does seem that the people who know the most about these subjects, epidemiologists, are certainly far more worried about Covid 19 than they are about seasonal flu. Just take this quote from one of the epidemiologists who eradicated smallpox from the planet:

Not sure i understand where your going with this? The economy can be fixed, once people die its curtains. People recovered from the great depression. Those 1000 people dying a day in italy are gone forever.

The domino effect on the economy does cost lives, and it comes back on the production industry, which in turn can effect medical.

If the economy stops, so does everything else. Its a very large rippling effect that is unsustainable, I dont feel the need to go over this again.

Also we are not Italy.

The world's leaders are literally agreeing to economic Armageddon because smarter people than posters on big footy agree that this virus is worse than a seasonal flu. Take the social distancing advice seriously and isolate yourselves.
