I get that.
They are the same as any other hoarder.

They can get access to online deliveries though.
They closed down online
I had an order in and it got cancelled my neighbour got hers and it was barely half what she ordered.
A lot of people will self isolate and wont want to go to a supermarket weekly when they do,especially the elderly

I don't know if this has got a run on this thread, it certainly hasn't had a run in any "mainstream" media in Australia to my knowledge so don't worry about who reported it, just read the report and be happy that there is some humanity still left in this world:

and speaking of this great humanitarian effort from this little island that has been under an embargo since 1958: https://oncubanews.com/en/cuba/cuban-doctors-arrive-in-italy-to-combat-coronavirus-pandemic/

Both China and Russia have sent planeloads of experts and supplies to Italy.
Cuba was the first. Don't forget that tiny little island that was also the first to communicate with the brain-dead George W upon the atrocities of the 11th of September, 2001 offering condolences and support in any way they could including Doctors, nurses and front line trauma specialists. Don't forget Cuba please.

January 23 i figured out this was going to be the worst thing to hit the world in a long time.

If we had closed the borders and put EVERYONE coming in in 14 days compulsory isolation we would still be open for business now - obviously industries like tourism would be hit but the rest of us would be going about our regular lives.

i knew - i harrased my relatives to stock up on some basics (specific baby formula thats hard to get and make sure you have a few weeks food)

im pretty sure im not 1/2 as smart as the people government has working for them.

normalcy bias is a hell of a drug!!

personally I think scomo was still in ‘stop the boats’ mode ie the race to appear resolute for political purposes. Ag that was over seven weeks ago

when it’s come to real action with a bigger threat, he’s as weak as water

while we are mentioning the dawn princess. Clearly as it visited NZ for two weeks then returned, the infected joined in Sydney. Where was NZ who are supposed to be in full lockdown too?

Edit: From Russia, 100 doctors and virologists and seven IL-76s of supplies.

We say a lot of negative things about Russia (and for good reason) but they have always been by our side in times of trouble be it WW1, WW2 and now.

I find it a bit disturbing that the Chinese cases all of a sudden stopped. I feel they have a vaccine and are not telling anyone because this is their plan to take over the world. Very little is being reported out of their country , there's a lot of he said she said and blame this way and that but I think it is a cover up at the moment. Time will tell just a theory.

Chinese cases are barely moving because much of the country is still on lockdown.

We heard about the "back to work" edicts, but what we didn't hear is outside of that many restrictions remain in place. My in-laws today are still prohibited from socialising, going to restaurants, or playing mahjong in their city.

The new cases coming in from Chinese returning home and the relaxation of current restrictions will see numbers rise again.

Also china is the factory to the world. China needs USA and eu customers buying their clothes, toys, and electrical goods. Putting these two markets into recession kills China's economy (which is why the RMB flatlined as bad as the aud)

They are scared.
Both of my parents' grandparents, died because of the Spanish Flu and my elderly folks are petrified of what they are seeing on the teli even though I and my siblings, have tried to allay their fears that by doing the right thing, they have nothing to worry about.

On the same day that the lass from Coles told me about people making multiple trips in and out of the store, I had lined up behind an older bloke who said to me that he told his son to shut his mouth and not try to scare him because he lived through the second world war as a kid and people don't know how lucky they are living in a time where even this type of emergency, can be managed and we will never run out of food! He then went on a rant about the "money people" being happy to scare idiots like his son to increase their profits, "we had people like this during war who make money from war but when war finish, we hung them in the town square".

Okay here's my take Mrs Slabs has been off work now for 10 days, she's an aged care worker, I drove her (she was in tears), straight in test done though never any outside contact apart from family (agrophobic but that's another story)

Meanwhile "twoslabs" for three weeks, aches and pains, headaches (which I never get), sore throat, runny nose, running hot and cold, person on my floor has tested positive .... result, NO TEST FOR YOU.

This is seriously crap, I'm trying to do the right thing, I get on well with my neighbours so I'm transferring $$$ and they give me a call 5min out and drop shit off, but come on unless I can name the person which I cant due to privacy well I'm screwed, thankfully my work is allowing me to work from home with a 2hr siesta cause I'm drained ...............

Yeah, I got the same story from a lass at Coles as well. We needed a leader to get on National Television with all the CEO's and head honchos of the supermarket chains and tell everyone that there is heaps of food and other essential items to last for a very long time and the only danger there is, is that if people go and panic buy, the supermarkets cannot physically keep up with restocking the shelves and the people that will suffer the most, will be the most vulnerable.
There is panic buying but I’m convinced that the major problems are being caused by those who are selling it on the side.

Temporary Insolvency Changes

On 24 March 2020, the Federal Government’s Coronavirus Economic Response Package Omnibus Act 2020 came into force. The aim of this legislation is to provide a safety net to businesses as they deal with the effects of Coronavirus and to put them in the best position possible to return to financial viability after the outbreak has passed.

The legislative changes are as follows:

1. Changes to statutory demands made by creditors
Increase in:
  • the minimum amount for which a creditor can make a statutory demand to a debtor from $2,000 to $20,000; and
  • the response time for a debtor responding to a statutory demand from 21 days to 6 months.
These changes will only apply to statutory demands served on or after 25 March 2020 and the changes will apply until 25 September 2020.

2. Individual bankruptcy
Raising of the minimum debt that allows a creditor to initiate bankruptcy proceedings against an individual debtor from $5,000 to $20,000.

An individual will now have 6 months, rather than 21 days, to respond upon receipt of a bankruptcy notice from a debtor.

Similar to the changes to statutory demands, these changes will only apply to bankruptcy notices issued on or after 25 March 2020 and the changes are designed to apply until 25 September 2020.
Further, an individual who applies for voluntary bankruptcy will have a six-month period, rather than the previous 21 days, in which unsecured creditors are unable to take further action against the individual. This change is also intended to apply until 25 September 2020.

3. Protection for director’s personal liability for trading while insolvent
Until 25 September 2020, a new section 588GAAA has been inserted in the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) (Corporations Act) pursuant to which directors will not be held personally liable on account of their company continuing to trade whilst insolvent, where debts are incurred in the ordinary course of the company’s business and during the six-month period from 25 March 2020 to 25 September 2020 (or longer if prescribed by the Government).

This change will not protect directors if debts are incurred dishonestly or fraudulently during this period and they will still be criminally liable. Directors still need to comply with all other duties required of them (e.g. their fiduciary duties and the duty of "care and diligence") during this period.

4. Treasurer’s power to make instruments
The Treasurer will be granted a temporary instrument-making power in the Corporations Act to temporarily amend provisions of the Act to allow compliance during the Coronavirus crisis. This power will last until 25 September 2020 and any instruments made by the Treasurer will apply for 6 months from the date the instrument is made.

Effects
These changes do not remove the ability of creditors to enforce their debts, as creditors may pursue debts through the court system. Further, these changes will likely only effect unsecured creditors and secured creditors will proceed as is. With this in mind, suppliers should assess their terms of trade as with these temporary measures in place debtors may have less incentive to make payments on time.

Directors will still need to consider whether debts are being incurred in the “ordinary course of business”. In what is universally acknowledged to be unprecedented circumstances, this concept may be significantly broader than previously envisaged. Directors and officers must also continue to assess their company’s financial position in a proactive manner and, where required, seek advice from experienced advisers promptly. Even with the six-month temporary relief from insolvent trading liability, companies which trade without a properly considered and formulated recovery plan risk putting themselves in a hazardous position once the period of temporary relief ends.
