Now I'm prepared to changed the title here if it wasn't his choice, by why in the world in an elimination final do we win the toss and decide to kick into a 4 goal breeze that was clearly noticeable at the ground, and give a bunch of front runners a head start!!!

Game over right there!

Bullshit my arse.... Anyone who chooses to kick into that breeze is making a bad decision, anyone who has played any type of decent footy knows that is the wrong choice!

Well don't take just take my word for it:

Winning the toss and kicking against a stiff breeze must have seemed like a good idea at the time. But Richmond captain Trent Cotchin has come under fire after Port Adelaide shot Sunday's AFL elimination final to pieces in the first quarter.

However Cotchin has found unlikely support from Port Adelaide dynamo Chad Wingard.

"The breeze was swirling around a bit... so it was a bit hard to pick an end," Wingard told SEN after the game.

"The breeze would go hard to one end, and then it would change around. Honestly, it kept changing and you had to adjust when you were kicking for goal."

We didn't even turn up to play, it was like watching the Richmond of 3 months ago.

The breeze shouldn't be the worry, it was the bloody leadership on the day. Not once did Cotchin stand up today, I'm a massive lover of the guy but we needed him to lead by example in the first quarter when no one else would.

Credit to the boys who played with a bit of heart today: Lids, Bachar, Maric and Miles. :hearts:

Yep lets blame the wind.
As much as I'm proud of the boys for the second half of the year, there is only one way to describe today

Fact is nearly every player was beaten in his role today, by a team that showed up to play when we did not, make excuses about the wind if you will but we were smashed in all areas by a team that clearly wanted it more.
End of story.

More like the Richmond of the 1990's.

The wind had little effect on how the game started or progressed. Unless you are prepared to argue that the constant loose men back for Port where somehow blown down there by the mighty power of the gale force elements? But that wouldn't work because the wind was going the other way. Port not only had loose men back whenever we did get it forward, but they had loose men coming out of defense all over the field.

Even if we contested a footy and bashed it to some random spot there would be a jailbird waiting on his own grinning like he just received a file inside a loaf of bread from a winking prison guard. It was just an horrendous day for our lot. It happens to every side and it happens in all forms of activity not just in football. When it aint your day, it aint your day. The wind played a secondary role to all of it and was perhaps as much a spectator to the debacle as we all were. Maybe thats why he kept swirling and turning about? Maybe old father wind was thinking 'f*** this shit, I can't take it, where the hell do I go to get away from this? Port supporters to the left and the right, lost Tigers straight up and down...f*** I'm like a mouse in a cage!!!'...or something...

Anyway, the whole wind thing is a media beat up, creating drama and inflating stupidity to crazy proportions where common sense draws the line and calls it a day.

I agree somewhat that kicking against the wind had a huge impact on the result of the game. Football at this level is a game of inches as clubs look for the slightest possible edge to gain an advantage over the opposition. We were always on the back foot after Cotchin decided to kick against the win.

Knowing that you have the wind at your back gives you plenty of confidence as a player, especially when you consider Port's long kick to space game plan. They were able to kick a couple of early goals, the crowd got into it (further inspiring the Power), and the rest is history. Momentum is huge in football and Port's great start set the precedent for the rest of the game.

We were insipid today and you obviously can't blame kicking against the wind as the ONLY reason we lost, but it certainly contributed. Above all, I reckon we were tired, mentally and physically, from playing essentially ten elimination finals in a row.

 I blame your CEO Benny Gale 'Force Wind'......

...........yeah sorry:p

Cotchin seemed the occasion got to him, weight of the world of expectation from a hungry supporter base wanting success ? uncharacteristically letting things get to him, admittedly I don't watch all Richmond games but he just seemed off?

Didn't see it right from the start so don't know about the wind, but if you want to get rid of Cotchin on the strength of that (or for any reason) we'll have him. Our midfield's going all right at the minute, but we will manage to squeeze him in somewhere. In our starting 18 too.

Got on him at 50/1 for the Brownlow couple of weeks back - not a bad price to give me a bit of an interest on the night.

Let's assume you are right and it was the wrong call after winning the toss. Made a few mistakes today myself too. Still a quality player though and seems like a decent bloke to boot.

The kid is a young captain and went through a lot this season. Imagine having to carry your team out of a hole that no one else ever got out of.

The hole of 3-10.

Just like the players were spent today after the 9 game winning streak, he was spent leading. They will probably be a lot more resilient next year and stronger mentally, so don't despair :)

The headline says it all, but if you really want more evidence, how about the opposition coach?

"Hinkley, who naturally has more experience at Adelaide's new home of football than the Tigers, conceded the Power didn't know what they would have done had the toss gone in their favour.

"In the box we weren't sure … it felt like the breeze was affecting both ends to be fair," Hinkley said.

"Travis [Boak] asked me two or three times 'which way are we going to kick?' and we weren't absolutely, 100 per cent sure ourselves.

"They looked bad at the end but … Trent Cotchin didn't make a horrendous mistake or anything, it was just a pretty tough decision to make."

Lucky some of the fools on here don't have a position at Richmond or we would have given away the whole team.

Everyone was confused by the decision in the stands where I was. You could maybe argue that the wind was swirling rather than clearly favouring one end, but what was blindingly clear during the warmup was that the goals were pretty sheltered by the huge stand at the Riverbank end, while at the exposed north end goals the wind pulled the ball hugely from right to left. Players were having to aim outside the right point post to allow for the wind to bring it back.

Just inexplicable why you would kick to that end.

Not sure the wind had a great deal to do with goals kicked by Port in the 1st, not to many were kicked from outside 50. I think the lack of pressure had more to do with it.

When i coached junior footy many moons ago, i always instructed my team to kick into the breeze in the 1st, as you were fresh, and could come home with it when you were tired in the last quarter.
