Ive no doubt he can, but needs the cattle on the park. I dont care what anyone says..the coaches dont actually go out and kick it.

On my reckoning there were 10 first choice player missing from the side that played in Alice Springs...no side can take that many casualties and still perform properly.

I had hoped to see significant improvement in the younger players but nothing I have seen this pre season would tell me that anything less than our full kit will be required to push the pacesetters this year.

And you've seen....one February trial game?

Correct....I take it then you believe that we can push for a flag with all of those players out.

Every contender in the game needs to have close to its best kit out there to give itself a strong chance of winning the premiership. I'm referring to you suggesting that there is no significant improvement from our younger players. Drawing this conclusion off the back of one game of trial football? Really?

Absolutely not. Just that I have not seen anything which would change my view and the view you have stated above.....that to push for a flag, even just a top 4 spot, we would need substantially the same side that played last years semi + Bock + VB + Knights.

The context of the post was not denegration of our younger players, simply to comment on NC's abillity to win a flag which I maintain is inexorably linked to our best side...which I guess is stating the obvious.

Peter, did we have our best sides playing in 97 and 98? Some would argue we were missing some important players from both years - and that some cameo roles (Ellen in 97, Caven on Carey in 98) and a smidge of good luck were the reasons we won in the end. Craig certainly can win us a flag - but a LOT of things have to fall his way for it to happen.

Just to take that a step further, the best coach in the league "should" be able to win a premiership every year, right? Well we all know that isn't a logical conclusion. The best coach also has to have a pretty good team that has some depth that covers injuries to key players. He also has to have a great fitness team that works to getting his players to their peak fitness levels at the right time. Not to mention surround himself with assistant coaches in specialist areas. Then there's match day itself where the coach (and his players) are at the mercy of the umpires, the ground and the conditions.
