Countdown Clock

I HATE countdown clocks. On TV and moreso at the games. Takes away all the suspense :thumbsd:

One of the great things about our game, is late into the last quarter we don't know when the game will end, and makes our game unique, when you compare it to other codes, sports that are played within our country.

Why the AFL need to f**k with our great game is beyond me. :thumbsd:

But they have it in America?

Dwayne Russell actually just said something like: "You need to know when to effect the full court press and pinch the ball". I'm not kidding.

All the players on field usually know exactly how long is left so why not everyone else, I think it could be exciting for the game, I have seen some amazing highlights in Basketball over the years when players realise they have to do something miraculous as there is only a few seconds remaining, could also happen in footy!

So tell me what a player is thinking after a quarter has gone 29 minutes? That he still has 5 minutes left to do what he wants? Hardly. No-one need know the exact time remaining to give the game an exciting finish.

Actually it will add some interest and intrigue in terms of seeing teams create 'set plays' during the final quarter if they scores are close and they know how much time is remanining ...

People should be 'open minded' to something new and interesting ..

The runners constantly get the message out to the players, why shouldn't the fans know how long is left.

Because I don't want to ****ing know.

It's neither new nor interesting, just another slice off the originality and unique format of our once superb game.

So because you don't want something, the rest of us shouldn't get it?

Live at the game it's very new and it's very interesting, it could work or it may not, I don't think we'll see it during the regular season any time soon but it'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Although, I do remember going to Princes Park back when I was a wee young fella and seeing the old analog clock on the scoreboard. Which was even harder to tell how long had been played, it wasn't digital, it didn't have the seconds and it wasn't easily viewed from the other end of the ground.

Scenario, first quarter 15 seconds left and Fevola lining up from 60 metres but sees eddie Betts on a good lead up the corridor or to the pocket....what do you do

Also streaming of half back with 15 seconds left... what do you do go wide and run down the clock or drive it to a 1 on 1 contest inside 50 in case we get a mark, crumb or better yet a free kick from a panicked defender.

Deliberate out of bounds paid in forward pocket 40 out and theres only 8 seconds left... what do you do have a set shot bannana after the 1/4 time bell or chip it backwards outside 50 looking to square it up and the siren sounds whilst doing this or you play on and run around from the boundary line only to have the siren sound on you??

The countdown clock could add another dimension to footy smarts and clock management and make our game even more professional whilst potentially adding some great highlights!

How I hate him.

Completely unnecessary. How about if you're 3 points down with the clock on 30 minutes in the final quarter? You're taking off your shoes, ready to start on your toes cause your fingernails are completely chewed through. Every second that passes you become more anxious, until the old bloke with the radio tells you there's 20 seconds left and you "Bugger it..." and head for the exit?

A lot more suspenseful than looking up at the clock and knowing exactly how much time there's left for the siren. It works for basketball because even when there's 15 seconds left on the clock, scoring is still a real possibility. 4,5,6 points with two minutes and it's still a game. 11, 12, 13 points in football with two minutes left on the clock and you're little to no chance.

Its unnecessary, and I find it hard to believe that it will add anything to the game. Innovation that improves the game is one thing, but changing the game for the sake of change itself is pointless and will eventually ruin the game we love......
Having said all of that, having a trial during the NAB Cup, well, frankly, who cares, it makes no difference to the real season or game.

As mentioned, the players already have the runners to tell them. Personally, I think from a spectator point of view it will ruin one of the great things about the game. Being at the ground and not knowing exactly how long is left...nail bitter...and all of a sudden you hear that siren. Why take that away? Why change things yet again?

I say leave it out Collo....just pay the clubs some more money instead of wasting it

I thought you said the players already know how much time is left? How are these scenarios any different to the status quo then?

all that blown away by 1 question .

I reckon it would be good for the game.

It's stupid if your 60 out from goal with a minute of game time left in the first quarter and you blaze away because it says 30 minutes on the clock.
