It's better to fall than to never reach the summit at all. Football is cyclical - all supporters can really ask for is that their club emerges from its time at the top with a flag. West Coast achieved that. Hopefully we'll drag ourselves back up into that top bracket in the next few seasons.

How do you reckon the Saints would be affected by the loss of their two best players?

Take out Riewoldt and you wouldn't have made finals last year.

Not sure who you think your second-best player is (Hayes? Fisher?), but I reckon you'd see a pretty big drop.

There will be many reasons for this rise:

1 The success of last seaon:

2 the promise shown last season;

3 the fact we can win a premiership with playing group:

4 Ros Lyon has a plan, and is the coach that looks like getting us a result:

5 the signing of Ben Cousins;

There is probably more than 4 reasons above Ben that would go towards the increase in membership, but Ben will get the chocolates. The media will say "membership booms at St.Kilda with inclusion of Cousins".

Ben will have a mob of adoring female fans...and good luck to them. I am sure I will be able to sit in the members with these poor women through out 2009 and beyond....I will take one for the Saints!

L2M4G turned Hutchy at the Cox Plate yesterday.

After Race 10 it was time to adjourn to a local watering hole. As I walking along, Ricky Nixon came up beside me.

Of course I asked him about Cousins. He gave me the following.

"It's a done deal. The meeting with the AFL is the week after next and as long as he gets the all clear (which I fully expect him to get) he'll be at the Saints in 09".

He also gave me some news on Nathan Carroll which I backed up with another source, but I'll put that in the Carroll thread.

I gave Ricky a pat on the shoulder and thanked him for the info and he responded with a returned pat on the shoulder. What a top bloke.

This is not a shadow of a lie my brothers. I'm a bit of a regular here and wouldn't pull the wool over your eyes. I'm very excited by this news.

Anyone else Cox Plate up yesterday?

I think it is a big if, but I would find it highly unlikely that he wouldn't be allowed to play again. It's a double edged sword, but if they didn't let him back in, my goodness will the drugs policy cop a hammering.

Are you saying you don't trust this innocent looking bloke? (probably the only player other than Robert Harvey to keep the same 1980's hairstyle)

I know Ricky has a bit of a dodgy reputation these days, but as an ex-Saints player you would like to think he would do the right thing by his old club and not tell any porky pies.

Anyway it sounds like good news about Cousins, providing he gets the all clear from the AFL - which I can't see any reason why he wouldn't.
