Summer COVID and the Olympic Games

Positive case in Olympic Village today, i doubt these games will go on?

Your doubts are misplaced. They will go ahead. 85% of athletes are vaccinated.

Whether every athlete and/or team will compete, is another matter. Highly likely some will test positive and be withdrawn.

Does anyone know what percentage of Tv rights goes to Japan.Delayed a year and no crowds in attendance. It will be hard for the host nation to get a return on there massive investment.

I guess too late now to cancel the Games but Covid cases in the athletes village are growing. There are some 4K athletes plus officials in the village so if cases continue they may create a huge cluster. I can see hundreds of athletes pulling out in fear of that occurring.

The poor athletes. They must live in angst every day stressing about getting covid. Not stressed about actually having the virus, but stressing about missing their event because they have the virus. So shit.

Get a bad feeling covid is going to destroy these Olympics. What is the protocol if an athlete tests positive now if they are in Tokyo? Are they barred from competing?

What if there is a mass outbreak and teams and individuals have to pull out of events? What if an athlete tests positive just before their final?

Very unlikely of a mass outbreak with over 80% of athletes immunised
The ones that cause the problems will be the unvaccinated
The positive cases will be sent home

Hey folks, pretty funny thread. I live in Tokyo, so here's the deal.

Over 65 athletes and staff have tested positive in the village and at training camps around the country as of today. The IOC run the show. Japan's Government conceded all leadership to them.
The Japanese Prime Minister Mr.Suga is a sock puppet, and begged the Bach from the IOC for a 'safe and secure' games.
Abe the previous Prime Minister who arranged the whole sh%t show, was given the option to delay the games a further year (which would have given Japan time to vaccinate the population, currently only 20% of Japanese are fully vaccinated.) but Abe chose to take a the public health gamble and hold the games now believing he would still be in office to take the glory and that Covid was magically going to disappear.

Suga is a fall guy, wasn't elected into office, and will take the hit at the next election...maybe, but only about 35% of Japanese people vote.
Basically the Japanese Government doesn't even understand what Covid 19 is, so their idea of an 'Olympic Bubble' is to have athletes spread all over the country with lax quarantine conditions and a request to not leave their hotels for more than 15 minutes. But, just like the daily saliva tests it is self reported and un-monitored. That's why the Ugandan weight lifter was able to run away from his quarantine hotel and appear on security camera footage halfway across the country the next day. Hahaha!!

Athletes who test positive 6 hours before a competition will be barred. But there will be exceptions for popular athletes and sports, what will be interesting is how many rivals of Japanese competitors suddenly test positive on the morning of any medal events involving Japanese teams!

As for TV revenue...local TV pays for the rights to broadcast. The only people making money are the IOC and NBC who own the rights. Japan was hoping to make money from tourism and attendance. But neither of those are possible.

A large majority of the people here don't want the Olympics to take place. But their voices are ignored, and most of them are grudgingly in the 'Shouganai' attitude of 'Oh well, it can't be helped'.

Finally no-one has any idea what the situation is exactly with Covid due to the Government policy of not contact testing or tracing. It remains very difficult and expensive to get tested: most people who present to a Doctor with symptoms are not tested and sent home. The State of Emergencey here is toothless. Everyone is still crowding onto trains going to work. Schools are holding summer camping events and sports days. Cafes and restaurants are full.
Most people are vigilant with mask wearing, but it's not uncommon to see groups of white foreigners strolling around without masks, and many Japanese do the mask around the chin thing. Japanese teachers I work with teach classes with a mask, but then relax and take it off to chat together in the teachers room during breaks.

The main concern for the Japanese was athletes bringing Covid into the country, but the actuality is Athletes are catching it almost as soon as they arrive here.

Long story short, most athletes are going to be bringing a viral present back home to you all! Enjoy!!

Appreciate the expat? Knowledgeable view of what a snafu this olympics will be

Haha, Yes, ex-pat. Been here for over 20 years.
I've tried to just explain the local situation objectively without getting too angry. For those wishing to see the actual English language news reports, and comments from other expats you can get a dose at 'Japan Today'...but I'm loathe to point to it as that site engages in censorship of negative and scientific comments. Hahaha!

As expected. I said the Olympics should've been pushed back to 2024 and all other Olympics 4 years thereafter.
Unfortunately nbc would have sued ioc who would have sued japan for breach of contract , and Dennis denuto would not have been assisting

Organisers within a whisker of pulling the pin on the games.

No. Organiser was asked a question about whether cancellation was an option and he was too polite to say 'don't be a dumbass'.

Also, the guy from Japan above... there has not been 65 positive tests in Village. There have been 4. The rest have come from the 20,000 staff around Japan setting up venues, TV, etc.

I don't think any Olympics since LA 1984 has made a profit (don't know about the winter ones) if this article is to be believed.

Of course the IOC make their billions. Part of the reason a don't really want Brisbane to get 2032, and also part of the reason Brisbane seems to be the only city that really wants them.

The number of events really needs to be scaled back. If the Olympics is not the highest honour for a particular sport (ie, tennis, soccer etc. where the best don't really care), it shouldn't be in the Olympics.
