Without a doubt the best musical instrument in the world.

Favourite songs that contain the cowbell:
Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the reaper
Kings of Leon - Red morning light
Radiohead - Electioneering
Cake - Short Skirt long jacket

Steven Adler who was Guns n Roses' drummer up til Appetite For Destruction was the master of the cowbell! That whole album is like a cowbell clinic! :thumbsu:

Tommy was pretty keen on it too. Dr Feelgood is a sweet example.

"I got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell."

They're the 2 guys that I immediately thought of as well.

Nicko from Iron Maiden lets loose on the cowbell on Can I play with madness.

Hey Oaksy, and other cowbell lovers.
You may have already, but check out Rush's drummer Neil Peart, especially when he solos. He doesn't just have a SINGLE poxy cowbell, he has an entire 'cowbell tree' on his kit, with about 12 of the b*stards on it. He goes off on it during his solos. Check out his solo on their 1982 live album 'Exit Stage Left'. Killer cowbell mayhem!!!!

i think the cake song was a jam block used from memory..but i could be wrong.

mind if i ask what the difference is, as i am a drumming novice of the highest order.
I consider a drummer to be an actual drum kit player like:

as opposed to someone who plays percussion instruments like:

or
SheilaE.jpg

Now as much as the drum kit is technically considered a percussion instrument, i dont consider myself a percussionist, i'm a drummer.

But there are thousands of different percussion instruments (look at all the stuff on the table in the 3rd pic for example), but i dont think you could call the musician who plays them a drummer. I personally wouldnt ever claim to be able to get close to playing them all.

Similarly, i'm sure there are many percussionists who wouldn't be able to play a conventional drum kit, although they'd certainly have a much better chance of learning it than someone who hasn't ever played a percussive instrument.

Basically the definition of a percussion instrument is "any object which produces a sound by being struck with an implement, shaken, rubbed, scraped, or by any other action which sets the object into vibration".

Bongos, congas, timbales, tambourines, castanets, maracas, shakers, whistles, chimes, glockenspiels, vibraphones, xylophones, and of course the humble cowbell are just a few examples of literally thousands of different percussion instruments.

Ha! Oh well. I had fun writing it. :o

Oh, and a jam block is basically a plastic woodblock, like so:

As opposed to a cowbell:

Skid Row's "Monkey Business" (absolute corker of a tune!) features a nice little snare-cowbell paradiddle in the middle 8 before the solo as well.
