Ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! :D   :p
In the space of 12 months, young Magpie Shannon Cox has gone from being on the Collingwood rookie list and playing Williamstown reserves, to earning a place on the senior list, with high hopes of wearing the famous black and white stripes in 2007.

Cox, who hails from South Fremantle in Western Australia, spoke to collingwoodfc.com.au on Thursday at the Lexus Centre about the difficulties he faced when he first moved to Melbourne, his first year at the club, Arizona, and the season ahead.

By the end of 2006 Cox had earned a permanent place in the Williamstown seniors and impressed all with his pace, confidence and good hands, prompting him to focus on taking the next step. He said he was "over the moon" when national recruiting manager Derek Hine tapped him on the shoulder and said Cox would be on the senior list in 2007.

"I hope to get a couple of senior (AFL) games under my belt (in 2007)," Cox said.

"It’s going to be pretty hard to do with how the team’s looking this year, but first aim is the Sydney scratch match (February 16), and hopefully go forward from there.

"I don’t want to set my goals too high, rather take it step by step. From Sydney there is the pre-season cup, and from there hopefully I can get a game, I want at least three games this year, not set my goals too high."

By his own admission the first preseason was tough as he battled homesickness and a burning desire to return home to his family, but now after more than a year at the club and some incredible experiences, the 20-year-old is ready to make his mark.

"In the first preseason I was really homesick. I just wanted to train until the Christmas break and then go home, I just really wanted to get home and be with family again", Cox added.

"Then when we came back after the Christmas break it was really different. The boys were all really good, because we were all trying out for rookie spots so we were only basically here for a little bit before the Christmas break.

"Up until then I hadn’t done a preseason in my life, I’d just turn up about three weeks before the games would start and I would play, and now in my second preseason, last year was a really big help."

Having played in a number of positions at South Fremantle including the ruck, the 190-centimetre Cox played full forward for the Williamstown reserves before winning promotion to the Seagulls’ senior line-up. He was moved to a back flank for the first time in his career, a move that paid off.

"I played back flank and that was really good, I hadn’t seen anything past ruck and going to the back flank opened up my eyes a bit.

"I learnt to read the play really well and move the ball. Mick (senior coach Mick Malthouse) has had me training on a wing, so he wants me to be a wingman, but I’d like to see myself as a forward flank, swapping back flank.

"I don’t mind kicking a goal, but I mean doing the team things as well, so other boys can kick the goals.

"It’s all about team things, just kicking the goals doesn’t mean everything. Winning is the main thing you want to do, playing back or forward."

Like so many of his teammates, Cox was full of praise for the club’s high-altitude training camp at Northern Arizona University back in November, the first time Cox took part after being drafted after the 2005 trip.

"We went to Arizona and I did things over there I didn’t think my body would be able to do, so it’s a really big help doing the second preseason, it’s helped my body so much.

"I expected it to be hard but when I got over there and did the training sessions they were probably some of the hardest training sessions I’ve done in my entire life."

"Some days we’d do a training session and the next day I could barely walk, the body was absolutely worn out to the max. But I got through, and now I realise what my body can do, I got through and it’s helped me mentally as well as physically."

Cox, who has been handed the No.12 guernsey for the 2007 season and beyond, also described his best footballing attributes, and Collingwood supporters will be delighted to know another tall, athletic youngster is coming through the ranks.

"I’ve got a fairly good leap, my athleticism helps me a fair bit on the oval, being able to move around, and bend down really low, and move sideways, it helps me a hell of a lot."

Re: Screwballs the mad screwy

Atleast he wasn't number 1 draft pick like Goddard and battled for the Scorpians for 2 years before getting the easiest gig in football, the "loose man in defence" and now saint fans consider him a star. Cox might play seniors after a year on the rookie this year or might not. I Believe another Cox from some where in Perth was a rookie listed player once.

Re: Screwballs the mad screwy

Yeah, really impressed me with his improvement and by the end of last season was showing some of the magic i think he is capable of producing in the seniors in the years to come. Could end up being a big tick for the recruiters by finding a player who'll come off the rookie list to contribute. Still has ways to go, but good to see the kid has solid, realistic goals. Oh, hang, on, what was the point the threadmaker made?

Re: Screwballs the mad screwy

PS I like the sound of 12. Hopefully he'll be another Dennis Banks type.
Be nice but he’d need some boxing lessons I’d suspect. I’d love to get someone in the side who can handle themselves like Banks could though. Hopefully he doesn’t get the injuries Banks copped. 190cm is a good height for an athletic wingman if he has the skills.

Re: Screwballs the mad screwy

Not sure of what the point of the thread is, but Cox must be the luckiest promoted rookie in the game. I could not quite work out why he wasnt kept on the rookie list for another year and then promoted in 2008 if his form justified it.

why not he would probably be better than someone at pick 60 or 70 who would come directly on to the list

Re: Screwballs the mad screwy

Yeh, keep Cameron and give Cox another rookie year. You could always drop Cloke the following year and promote Cox if he proved good enough. Don’t know the full extent of Cameron’s shoulder prognosis though.

He's not the luckiest, nor was he lucky. I saw him play for Williamstown throughout the year and he improved as each game passed. He was ready made compared to some of the other kids. IMO could be anything - from rock bottom to Adam Goodes - we are looking at a kid with an abudance of talent and flair. I hope we get to see him in the Black and White sooner rather than later. I've got no doubt we will.

Like you say - he could be anything - hence he needs another year's development. He'll most likely play every game this year in the VFL.

I too think he's promising, but at the end of the day he's nowhere near senior selection yet. Why promote him when its not neccessary?

Re: Screwballs the mad screwy

I would have kept Cam Cloke on the senior list and Cox on the rookie list.

Iacabucci was stiff to be delisted too, maybe he could have been kept for another year.
well i am glad that you and mark t are not in charge of list management down there

Could have to do with salary - They figure that he is worth paying senior list money moreso than a #73 draft pick, so instead of using that draft pick to pay a player that we could get in the rookie draft anyway (Sharrod Wellingham himself said that the Pies wanted him in the draft, but didn't have enough picks), we pay him for the same reason.

Also, he is going to be much more ready to contribute to the senior side than a #73 draft pick, and while YOU believe that he's not ready for AFL football, it's possible that the coaching staff believes differently.

Re: Screwballs the mad screwy

Who are our rucks when (not if, but when) Richards and Fraser get injured?

Its only tweaking the last spot on the list to get an extra ruck option, its hardly radical criticism.
I think that's why we delisted Cameron Cloke and got a ruckman without dodgy shoulders.

Why would you want someone who's been more injury prone than either Fraser or Richards to be the insurance policy for them?

Besides, honestly, I'd rather take a punt on the potential quality of Brent Macaffer, however unlikely, than keeping the known mediocrity of Cameron Cloke, regardless of which position he plays.

I don't care if we have to play Dale Thomas in the ruck - Keeping an injury prone mediocre player is NEVER a good idea.

Fair enough, if his shoulders are THAT stuffed, he had to go. But were they REALLY stuffed? Or did he go because of his surname? We'll find out over the next year or two I suppose. Its rare to see careers end due to shoulder injuries - knees and backs maybe, but not shoulders.

Either way, we're at least one ruckman short of what we need in season 2007. No biggie if Josh stays fit, but its a very risky way to manage the list.

Re: Screwballs the mad screwy

If we REALLY wanted a ruckman we would of got another one besides/as well as Bryan in the draft or even rookie draft.

That shouldnt stop me being critical - in fact its my point. I cant see why Cox (or alternatively, Toovey)wasnt left on the rookie list for one more year in lieu of an extra ruckman, preferably one ready to play senior football if required to cover for injury. It improves our list because it gives us an extra experienced rookie to promote if needed.

Re: Screwballs the mad screwy

It is all very easy to write Cameron Cloke off as a complete dud but compare him as a CFH come ruckman at 20 to Anthony Rocca. Tony Shaw played Anthony Rocca at CHB in 1999 out of desperation and that may well have saved his career because up to that time his career highlights were a half screamer and a spot as an emergency for the 1996 grand final while at Sydney. Cox at WCE was not even drafted as a youngster. We backed Fanning on the senior list because we were so desperate for someone to turn into a ruckman.

Maybe Cameron Cloke will be delisted and maybe it won’t be just his shoulders that are to blame but please bear in mind that very few CHF’s or ruckman achieve much if anything by 21 or so and many of those that do end up greats. The likes of Len Thompson or Peter Moore – who had the luxury of Thompson to learn from - may have been obviously good players very early on but they are exceptions. Monkhurst dycked around for a few years before becoming serviceable and perhaps a little better. He certainly didn't set the world on fire as a teenager.

Neither was playing Fraser as ruckman at 18 because we didn’t have anyone else. Timmy raised valid points. The problem is that we have a coach who doesn’t respect the position of ruck and it costs premierships. As far back as 1991 WCE were rucked out of a semi final at home by a hack from the Hawks who never kicked on. We can argue about the names but we’ll be having the argument in another 3 years time and nothing will have changed.

As for rookie listed players – we already know we can promote for long term injury from round 1. When Didak comes back chances are we would have had another opportunity to make a promotion. That’s just how things tend to go. Clubs get injuries. If not then the first half of the season would have seen ample opportunity for Cox and/or Toovey to play.

Re: Cox On The Rise

I have altered the thread title to be less trollish.

I thought Cox was a bit lucky, but the more I think about it, the less I think he is lucky.

He did improve outta sight during the year, and not just that, covered roles he'd never played before in the second highest standard comp in Australia. And played finals!

He ended up being a servicable half back flanker, and with his athleticism, pace and size, not to mention good standard of skills, he proved to be a headache for many a forward. And he can play forward. Might be able to run with, maybe even play wing.

I think over the past few months, since our last draft, I have come to appreciate the Hine-sight method of recruiting a bit better. Raw is OK. You can in many, not all, instances coach that out. What you can't teach is athletic standout traits.

And Cox falls into the raw category quite clearly. Pre-seasons of a couple of weeks of mucking around (and still making WAFL seniors!), vs a professional preseason in an AFL environment. Was a very late starter to the game.

Might not quite make it, who knows with 20 year old kids. There's still a lot to learn, but he has all the physical facets to make it and make it quicker and bigger than others. Worth an elevation.
