Coach Craig McRae

Dib probably an inferior version of Atu.

Not sure I'd be hanging my hat on him.
I quite like the look of Dib, but not looking at other small forwards because of him is like not looking at other tall forwards because of McMahon.

I’ve watched quite a few of his games, and let me say there’s a reason he has featured regularly in Twomey’s Draft Team of the Year.

He’ll be a mainstay in our team at some point, Stengle is superfluous.

Hm....member since 2002, barely any posts in almost 20 years.

Very active post new coach appointment.

I wanna give the benefit of the doubt here but I'm sensing some (possibly subconscious?) animosity towards a coach that played for a team that beat us in 2 Grand Finals. Your posts about McRae just come off as...odd

It isn't that though I did enjoy Brisbane losing on the week end.

If Wrighty had said Craig has success in his DNA, he has great people skills etc etc that would be one thing. It would have been better if Wright did say that instead of Craig as it would support his appointment.

When McCrae comes out and says how good he is it always concerns as it is not necessary.

Some people who posted on here may be right by saying he was told to say those sort of things to make sure membership is up etc and that may be true. Or it may be he is inexperienced in those situations and it came out perhaps not how he wanted. That too may be true.

On face value though, I am uncomfortable with what he said both in the presser and then he repeated the dose in the long article posted on the week end.

I am not against him at all, I just said it was a worry, It may be a misplaced worry, and if so well and good. I didn't interview him.

I can only go on my perception which is what it is. Most others find those words comforting by him and that is their perception.

Notwithstanding my worry, I am 100% behind him - he is our coach.

I saw Dib a couple of times play at vic park. Looked very fast and had some flashes of real skill. Seemed to have a higher ceiling than even the better VFL players.

He's trying to build a winning culture. I reckon he's just sending a message to the playing group.

But you did say “but the gushing over him in this thread is OTT so far imo”.
I think a lot of people are excited with relief that we snagged a coach who has credentials worth getting excited about and not just a big name because some felt we deserved one.
IF we got Lyon I would be pretty un-excited.

If we had gone for Lyon I would have been furious with the club. Luke Ball is one of the most courageous and loyal blokes you would ever want to meet, it tells you something that he walked out on Lyon when they were still in flag contention.

I am not sure Luke Ball walked out.
Lyons treated him like a leper in contract talks, privately insulting him in front of his team mates well before he decided he wanted to leave.
He asked for a trade to Collingwood and Lyon refused to make any kind of deal.
Ball nominated in the National Draft and "let it be known" that he would only play if he was elected by Collingwood.

hence Collingwood got Ball for ..................NOTHING.
I consider Ross Lyon a true piece of shit.

Yeah doesn't surprise me with Lyon, but he did us a great favour.

Well… pick 30. But nothing compared to his actual value, I’ll give you that.

If we hang onto Sier I won't be writing him off with McRae as coach.

Might actually connect with him despite him being a weird unit, and the fact his first instinct in the center square is to go long by foot (rather than to over-possess the handball) might be exactly what McRae is looking for.

That said if he isn't actually going to get picked, like this year, and isn't going to take any opportunity he gets with both hands, he'd be silly not to take to an offer elsewhere if one is forthcoming.

I don't have too much of an issue with his belief in himself to be honest.

I suspect it's one of those things ingrained in (particularly older) Australians where we like people to be more humble.

But honestly, that entire Brisbane team had a lot of self confidence. Aker was infamous for it, but the thing is, they could all back it up. Craig has the experience and the resume to support the confidence he has in himself so I'm ok with it. If he turns out to be full of shit, I'm sure we'll all let him know lol.

I think all the "fringe" players should be given 1 last opportunity under McRae.

It's no coincidence all these players had their best season(s) when Longmuir and Hocking were there.

wont be long till the blues are begging vfl coaches to take the job
It’s a poisoned chalice of their own making now. Experienced senior coaches don’t want the role because they’re a shambles off field, and rookie coaches don’t want to go there because they’ve seen how they treat coaches who don’t give immediate success.

It’s all so wonderful to witness!

I am with you here.
I get the feeling McRae was very nervous and is not the great public speaker we have been used to.
It was the questions he answered with one, or two, words which impressed me most.

Well… pick 30. But nothing compared to his actual value, I’ll give you that.

St Kilda refused Collingwood's offer of pick 30 in the trade period, saying his true market worth would be revealed.
As it happened, the Saints wanted either of Nathan Brown, Tyson Goldsack or Sharrod Wellingham, all of whom had thrived that season.
It turned out Collingwood's pick 30 was exactly what the market deemed Ball to be worth, as they snapped him up in the draft.
Ball has handled himself with class and grace, and St Kilda has moved on too.
Lyon not so much.
In an interview with Damien Barrett, Lyon conceded that Ball's departure may have led to the Pies receiving significant inside information on his sides tactics and would have played a part in the Pies' 2010 premiership victory over the Saints.

"He took some IP (intellectual property), with Max Hudghton (as an assistant coach) to help teach the press to Collingwood, and their talent was very strong," Lyon said.
He continues to this day to claim Ball was "traded".

I will always contend that Balls arrival and the actual trade of Darren Jolly were two significant contributors to our 2010 flag.

^ Yup, I attended the 2009 National Draft. It was sweet.
I remember the jubilation when we got Ball, simply because it stuck it up Lyon.
The fact he was such a great acquisition was a bonus.

And Melbourne selecting Luke…
