Sorta reminds me of a story I read recently about the 1979 World Cup final. The West Indies batted first and made nearly 300. In reply, England dug their own grave. Geoff Boycott took 17 overs to reach double figures, and Clive Lloyd later recounted how his team were a little disappointed when he got out :)
There is an allegation that Clive Lloyd deliberately dropped Boycott early on

Shane Watson hit in the head by a James Pattinson bouncer at training earlier today. He's OK but badly shaken. Initial thoughts were, "Oh no: not another Hughes incident." All good: hopefully it has the effect of causing Watto to make a big score on Boxing Day :-)

The only tall spinner I can recall is that guy named Beer - 195cm I thnk. Left arm offee

Boxing day team named

In batting order ...

. Australia XI: David Warner, Chris Rogers, Shane Watson, Steve Smith, Shaun Marsh, Joe Burns, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.

I'd have Watson down at #6 but who can bat #3 ... Marsh

sooner or later it had to happen. An Australian player had to be hit on the head. Watson was shaken but the media are making a real big deal out of it. There is a 'Smith to keep an eye on Watson' headline in this morning's Monopoly Times. Overreaction, surley if Watson is playing in this Test he has to be fit enough mentally and physically.

Watson cannot afford to have any demons as he is playing for his place in the Australian side, or at least he should be.

I agree with Ricky Ponting, if India are going to win a Test it will be this one and this Australian batting line up is not a strong one. It needs Watson and Haddin to fire.

I've just arrived in Melbourne, and can report that the predicted early showers haven't eventuated. It's as cold as a mother in law's kiss (guess who forgot his jumper!!!), but there's blue sky as far as the eye can see. Should be a great day of Test cricket.

Really looking forward to the first ball of the Boxing Day test. A great Australian tradition.

Bit of a laugh on the way to the ground: I got off at Richmond train station, and as I was walking to the G, I passed the Richmond merchandise shop. One of the "stars" staring at me was one Troy Chaplin - Port's best player in the elimination final :-)

O'Brien the legspinner for Australia of the 30-40's was a tall one from memory

According to the MCG commentator Australia is being led onto the ground by captain Michael Clarke. He had one job to get right.

BRENDAN McCullum on fire in NZ again ... 4/290 off 57 overs v Sri Lanka

McCullum 100 off 74 balls ... now 139no off 97

Has hit 1000 runs for the calendar year now.

McCullum caught going for another big hit which could have smashed the record for fastest ever test 200 (current record is by Nathan Astle -- another NZ batsman -- off 153 balls). McCullum out for 195 off 134 balls. What a shame. But what a year! First ever NZ player to reach 300, first to reach 1000 in a calendar year, equalled record of runs by NZ player off an over, beat his own record for fastest ever hundred by a NZer. He's well and truly earned a Xmas bonus,

In other news ... Aussies are collapsing 5/216 ... and Shaun Marsh is shite.

Smith needed again to get a big score

In a similar position to the second test where Smith and Johnson rescued a precarious position and the tail wagged enough to push the score on.

India would be very keen to knock over Smith and make sure Haddin doesn't get back into some form. Second new ball taken will tell a story.

Smith is the key again tomorrow morning. If he can go on and get a big hundred, we'll be in the box seat. India's ground fielding was about as competent as my golf: diabolical!!! It certainly helped ease the tension after the early loss of Warner.

McCullum was awesome today - if he'd managed to get those extra 5 runs, it would have been a record that would have taken something extraordinary to better. The Kiwis are here next summer: if he's still in that sort of form, it'll be well worth watching!

good to see klinger in the runs again. funny the pregame interviewer wished klinger a merry christmas, klinger is a jew.....

klinger hits a 6 and brings up his 100 on the last ball of the innings.

another nail in the coffin of south australian cricket.
