• No more than 2 players for any given country
• Debut AFTER 1970
• Must select one player from each decade with at least 10 matches played (Exception if debut is in the 2020s)
• Must pick a team to suit the ground
• Players must not have played in the same team
• Must choose at least one player from all of the following countries
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • England
  • Pakistan
  • India
  • Sri Lanka
  • West Indies
  • South Africa
  • Zimbabwe
  • Bangladesh

From 7 am to 11pm you have 8 hours to select a player. If you miss you can make up later.
If you know you're going to be busy please send a pick to someone who's behind you, or myself and I won't read it unless I have to.
If you do come online, please submit your pick before leaving so we can keep the game rolling.

I've noticed it's been 10 years since this has been done and I've quite enjoyed the AFL redraft so I'm looking for interest to get this going again.

Looking for some conversation about how it might look and what suggestions people have to give this a go.

I'm not sure which options will work or whether they're good, but here goes.

I'm thinking some of the options as:

• Choose a team name

i'd wait to see how many players you have, and then do it slightly differently...

say there's 15 players in this game, i'd nominated 15 test locations around the world, and you can draft them at any stage in the snake draft, but once that location is off the board, it's off the board - so for instance, you might pick the gabba in the second round, but it means yr definitely not (well, unliklely to be) selecting two spinners

it adds an extra layer of strategy

alternatively, i would also say make it pick a touring squad of xv - so if you pick dharamsala as yr third pick, yr unlikely to focus on quicks, necessarily, but lean to a squad with a plethora of spin options

that would also eliminate the need to guarantee you have 2 left-hand batsmen or bowlers, i think, as yr thinking broader and from a squad mentality

you could make it even trickier and add 'opening combinations' as the only option, so for instance if you pick greenidge-haynes or hayden-langer then you get one guaranteed, but you automatically take the other with your last pick sort of thing

depends on how granular and super nerdy you want to get with any arbitrary 'rules'

Some of this is going over my head lol.

I love the idea of adding tge grounds to the draft. So if I had pick 1. I could choose Adelaide oval, you at pick 2 could pick Durban?

I think the goal is to make people think outside the box and prevent linear teams. Ie I pick ponting and hayden, Lord and Botham etc......


What do you think is the best way to handle decades?

I was thinking if the maximum picks per country is 2. I don't mind increasing to 3 like the previous draft. You can't pick two players that played in the same team, so you can't just go and get Hayden and Gilchrist. You would have to take say Gilchrist and Chappell for example.

Here are some other ideas (I asked Co-Pilot)

1. Captaincy Quandary:
   • Captain Must Be Picked Last: The captaincy is crucial. Make it interesting by forcing coaches to select their skipper as the final pick. It adds an element of suspense and strategy.
2. Wildcard Rounds:
   • Wildcard Picks: At certain intervals (say every fifth round), coaches can make a wildcard pick—someone unexpected or unconventional. It could be a retired legend, an underappreciated player, or even a promising youngster.
3. Geographical Constraints:
   • Homegrown Heroes: Coaches must select at least two players from their home country. This encourages loyalty and adds a local flavor.
4. Injury Prone or Aging Stars:
   • The Gambler’s Dilemma: Introduce a “risk” round where coaches can pick players with injury histories or those nearing retirement. These players might shine or fizzle out—it’s a gamble!
5. Ground-Specific Picks:
   • Pitch Specialists: Coaches must consider the type of pitch at their home ground. If it’s a spin-friendly track, prioritize spinners; if it’s a seamer’s paradise, load up on fast bowlers.
   • Altitude Advantage: If playing at high-altitude venues (like Johannesburg or Dharamshala), coaches can choose players known for their performance in thin air.

I followed cricket in the 90s mostly, lost interest early 2000s. Followed cricket again in the last 5 years so I've got some catching up to do. I know who I want for my first pick but the rules might change all of that.

Would you go as far as saying you can't have two players to have played together. So yes you can pick two from Australia, but you can't have Hayden and Langer for example but can have Hayden and Lillee.

That would require strategy to ensure you pick from every decade without picking two players that played together.

I think the best constraint that you must pick 1 from every test country up to Bangladesh and one from either Ireland or Afghanistan.
