‘Best in the world’: Stunning praise for Alex Carey after after wicketkeeping masterclass at the Gabba in second Test

Alex Carey has been rated the best wicketkeeper in world cricket as his game-changing ability to stand up to the quicks behind the stumps all but kept the Ashes in Australian hands.
Record-breaking gloveman Ian Healy said Carey was “clearly” the world’s best, with his efforts close to the stumps reminding him of storeyed Queensland great Don Tallon, a member of the Invincibles once rated the “Bradman of keepers”.

“Don Tallon has the reputation of being really low behind the stumps to the mediums as well as spinners, but then superior speed, unbelievable speed, to pounce on something and get a stumping,” Healy said.

“So that’s where I took it back to, it looks to me like high-quality old fashioned stuff with a modern look.”

Alex Carey has always been criminally underrated, I am glad he is finally getting the wider plaudits he deserves

If Head keeps opening, McSweeney could play in Head's old #5. Also, provides some part-time spin option.

Still prefer Head back in #5, with Renshaw opening... as we should protect our most important batsman.

If the selectors bring back Khawaja, they are morons, so happy for Head to open a while longer to prevent that but not a long-term option imo.
I like the idea of having more of a shot maker in the middle order.

McSweeney needs a bit of time to build his innings, he wont be afforded that as much down at 5.

I think he is in an awkward spot right now to make this side.

As much as I hate generic interviews and such, England just need to shut the **** up and start giving generic answers in interviews and go back to working on the basics behind closed doors. They sound so stupid right now

He's never made a century at FC or Test level either.
I watched him bat against India. It was even worse than watching JFM bat against international standard bowlers.

The point is that they are not prepared to go back to the basics.

Both McCullum and Stokes have made this point that they don't think they need to really change anything.

In better news, The WoaT has announced his retirement from Sheffield Shield cricket, at the end of the current season. The Shield is now in recess, while BBL is played over the Christmas/New Year window. He's not expected to be selected again once Shield cricket returns.

Hopefully, this will put an end to the lunacy of certain commentators, who were pushing for him to return to the Test Team if/when Khawaja inevitably failed.

** Marsh's record in T20I and ODI cricket is exceptionally good, and his position in the white ball teams is thoroughly deserved. It is only in red ball cricket where he has earned the WoaT nickname.

Mark Wood heading home

Their remaining quicks will find it tough on the next three pitches I think

If you add in some hot weather, we could churn out some big scores

Wow, Head & Weatherald having only opened together a few times together have the 3rd & 4th biggest opening partnerships in the past 2 years.

Both Uzzie and CA need to bite the bullet and hold a press conference in Sydney

Make it early enough Uzzie can get a quick 9 in at Royal Sydney

Khawaja a chance to return to the middle order according to the scribes in the Advertiser....
Khawaja's supporters (or more to the point, his publicity mouthpieces) are getting desperate.

His failure to put bat on ball against the quicks is mirrored by his poor reaction and catching in the slips

I do feel a bit sorry for Uzzie, he wanted to retire and had it planned when he wanted to go and frankly, he was batting well; he would go out on top. He was talked out of it by CA as they wanted him to play on for a while whilst we got our openners sorted over a two year gap.

Now he is trying to get a farewell game which he might get in Sydney when the series is over

Surely his 100 against England in England saves him from being close to the Woat

He's still #3 on the list. Lowest batting average for all players at #6, having batted a minimum of 50 innings in that position (i.e. that was their regular batting position).

He was the WoT. He's no longer the WoaT, but he's still very close to the top (bottom) of the list.
