Paine made himself look like a prize dick in this match. Whinged to the umpires about DRS, trash talking the opposition, smugly talking crap with team-mates when winning, dropping catches, failing to win a match from the jaws of victory.

If we've moved on from the 'ugly Australian' image since Cape Town under Paine, then we took a step back in this game. If we're going to engage in this nonsense then we may as well have Smith back as skipper and get a better keeper/batsman.

I came on to post the exact same sentiment about Paine’s behaviour this test. What was with him? Where was the good-natured banter that were a feature of his previous outings? In the end, it, most likely, caused him to lose his focus and damn well nearly lost Australia the match. I seriously hope Langer takes him aside and tears him a new one.

It's easy to have good natured, light hearted banter when things go your way. When you're under the pump and the pressure is on, that goes out the window.

I take your point SB. However, when he took over as captain, things were certainly not going our way. Langer and Paine’s leadership styles were a major factor in Australia steadying the ship. Paine needs to get back to what works best for the team... and him. If I was him right now, I’d be rightly feeling like a major pillock.

As much I dislike their team and especially board, hats off to India. Just a gutsy performance when so effected by biobubble, injuries, playing in Australia. IMHO this is an even better performance than their last tour here, as we were then clearly still recovering from sandpapergate. Never thought I'd see an Indian side do this in Australia.

Great effort India. Didn't think they would have had a chance of a draw on that track . But totally deserved it considering their injuries.
Looked to me that the pitch slowed up and made batting easier

as for the sledging..well Its just so childish. if i was batting and hearing that inane crap, I'd be thinking I'm winding these guys up..excellent !

Imagine being told to sort out your sportsmanship by a South American.

Incredible scenes.

Carey is not close to the keeper that Paine is and Paine has been a great captain given the circumstances. As others have said we don't need an extra bowler.

I don't think I've ever seen as many incorrect statements in as few words as this.

It's a supreme effort to be so off the mark. Herculean.

Lyon is far more dangerous on a bouncy wicket. Will be better at the Gabba.
Starc's had one bad test. Unless he's spent I wouldn't be droping

I wouldn't either unless he's sore

I just checked Starc's stats and it surprised me he averages over 30 with the ball against India, South Africa and Pakistan and 28 against the poms. That's higher than i thought considering the physical gifts he has

The average thing is more indicative of his ability to bowl plenty of 4 balls. His wickets per balls bowled is up their with the best.

His strike rate is 48.7
Cummins is 47.0
Bummrah is 47.9
Hazelwood, Anderson and Boult are all at 56.2.

He gets a hard time because he can have bad patches in games where he doesn't get batsman playing or goes for runs.

There is no way he should be on the way out.

Good post.
Compared to Glenn McGrath, his average is 6 runs worse but his strike rate is 3 runs better. He’s a good bowler who sits just below the best.
As said by others, his biggest problem is that when he’s not swinging or bouncing it, he looks rather benign.
Which is strange to see ‘benign’ balls at 145 klicks

Its the variety he provides too.

gets handy runs as well which is a real bonus. No way he's in danger

I was just surprised his average was as high as it was.

For mine, the team just needs to get in the right “headspace” again. Nothing too dramatic required. Paine has stood up today and owned his recent crap carry-on. That’s a good first step. Langer has been unusually quiet this series. He, probably, needs to make some sort of “line in the stand” statement to help steady the ship. Hopefully, Pucovski is OK to play.

Best thing Paine could do.

Bit of a storm in a tea cup. He just looked like a tired, frustrated captain, not happy with his keeping.
But he should be better than what he displayed.

Unfortunately, for Timmy, when you set the bar high, you get harshly judged when you don’t measure up. I’m sure he’ll bounce back. I like the guy, actually. I was just a bit gobsmacked.
