The Australian selectors are showing alarming levels of competence with the way they picked that side. I demand that Coulter-Nile and K Richardson replace Starc and Behrendorff. Ditto Zampa for Lyon. There’s got to be a way of getting the Marshes back in, so let’s injure one of Warner and Finch and drop the other. Promote Stoinis to 3 and have Smith and Khawaja bat 6 and 7 for late innings hitting. Better.

Melbourne's stinker of a season has actually proved to be a blessing in disguise. Imagine trying to process a successful competitive Melbourne Football Club at the same time as competent Australian Cricket Team selection. My tiny brain would explode.

Pakistan doing a good job so far against New Zealand. Giving themselves an opportunity to catch England (need to close the deal on this match first of course).

I've been hearing plenty of discussion by commentators about the order of the Australian batting line-up and in particular that Smith should be at number three over Khawaja. I don't think that Khawaja is set at number three, I think the three and four spots are floating depending on which owner goes out to keep a left/right combination.
They also talk about Maxwell coming in before Stoinis and Marcus ability to come in late and smash runs but I don't think that's his go. Stoinis (rare) best work is when he has time to get his eye in, then he can get destructive. Only Maxwell and Carey have really shown an ability to immediately score rapidly late in the game. I'd save Maxwell for the final ten overs.

I feel like Khawaja is a bit of a weak link in the lineup at the moment. Ideally he’d be opening with Smith at 3 but it’s too late in the tournament to have Finch or Warner bat at 4. Maxwell is probably the most adaptable batsman in the lineup - I can see the merits of bringing him in at over 25 if we’re 1/180 to try and cash in or in the last 10-15 overs to finish off. Stoinis is what he is and Carey has made a reasonable fist of finishing off the innings. This isn’t a rampaging Australian side of those halcyon days when we barely lost games and slaughtered teams on the way to World Cup glory but it’s a team that’s got quite a few assets and is playing generally smart cricket. Dare I say it, we look a bit like the Kiwis.

Kiwis have a more reliable middle order than we do, but the top of their order is pretty weak. They lost, but they managed to put a score on the board after being 5 for peanuts. Babar Azam's one-day record is pretty damn good considering Pakistan almost never play at home anymore. Imagine they would have folded like a deck of cards had the Kiwis managed to winkle him out for less than 50, but it makes the push for the final four more interesting with Pakistan now sitting just a point out.

Suspect the Poms will need at least a washout in their last two games - they don't have an easy run in from memory. Their NRR is worth another point by itself.

The Poms are a chance to miss.

Basically if England win their final two matches (India and NZ) they’re in. If they win only one and Pakistan/Bangladesh do the same- they’re in. If England win one and Pakistan (Afghanistan and Bangladesh) or Bangladesh (India and Pakistan) win their final two then England are out. If England lose both and Pakistan and/or Bangladesh win one - England are out. Huge games to factor in are England v India, England v NZ, Bangladesh v India & Bangladesh v Pakistan. Having said all this Pakistan will probably lose to the Afghanis.

Sri Lanka are some small chance if they get on a roll and others lose for them (the Steve Bradbury plan).

Of course a washout would change it all as well.

If I were somehow given the option of England missing the finals in exchange for Melbourne losing every game for the rest of the season, I'd seriously consider it...

Both those options playing out of their own accord isn't unfeasible...

Michael Clarke: "Mahela Jayawardene in the crowd... he'd be cheering on the Aussies, I reckon! Huehuehuehuehueuheu...."

****ing cringe merchant.

That is a ripper to Warner first up from Ferguson. Perfectly placed short ball.

3-50 odd and both Khawaja and Stoinis are lucky to be out there. Guptill doesn't drop many and Stoinis surely can't keep avoiding the fielders with the various shots on the up / spoons he's using.

Can't watch the game but it sounds like we still can't bat against a swinging ball .

Finch out LBW to one that swung back in from Boult but also kept a touch low. Was dropped driving on the up earlier at short cover (very sharp chance, though).
Warner out to a very good short one first up from Ferguson. Followed him slightly and just kissed the glove / blade on the way to the keeper.
Smith out to a screamer at leg gully by Guptill off Ferguson. Hooked around the corner and he plucked it out of the air behind and to the left.
Guptill also spilled Khawaja at 2nd slip doing his usual waft outside off.
Stoinis has looked unconvincing and has popped a couple up (NZ going without a gully, would have been regulation) and just missed / short of the fielders.

Khawaja is starting to look more at ease, and Stoinis was looking a bit better until he nibbled one outside off from Neesham.

Khawaja and Maxwell now.

Bowlers pulled us out of the poo and smashed the Kiwis out for under 200. (Max Gawn sheds tear) Another good fight back after all batsmen, besides Carey, making it look like hard work. Some runs from Stoinis and Maxwell would be nice also. Those 2 look the weak links atm. And Koudos to the NZ bloke in the crowd dressed as a Kiwi bird but looking more like an ewok with a dick coming off his forehead.

We'd have been better off picking Shaun Marsh and plopping him in at 5, but its now too late to do anything about the problem with one game left before semis. At least Marsh can bat, unlike Stoinis and Maxwell.

Hopefully not a jinx but I switched over to the cricket not too long ago and Roy and Bairstow are taking flight against the Indians. Good viewing.

I've had the cricket on in the background for a bit and I'm curious to find out over how many days New Zealand think this one-day match is being played.

Kiwis doing everyone a favour here if they manage to knock out India. I think they're still a fair chance as long as Dhoni is around though.
True. They need to farm the strike for the next 20 overs. It’s not like the target is huge. SR well under 6 but it must be a tough wicket.
