In Ayres' interview in the paper today it made me feel as if the club is really going somewhere now with a differnet approach and attitude towards football. One thing Ayres stated was that we needed another tall defender. I got the impression that we were going to make a play for a defender in the trade period.

I think we should attempt to get Croad as I believe he played his best football in defence at Hawthorn before he was moved into attack. He may appear to be a little 'lazy' however Ayres will be able to pull him into line just as he did with Stevo and Welshy. I think he'd be great for the club as we could play him mainly in defence but if we needed another option up forward he could also play there.

Croad said last year from memory that he thought Adelaide was a really professional club and was impressed after talking to Riccuito and Ayres and wouldn't have minded playing for the club if Hawthorn had traded him here.

A trade could involve something like:
Johnson to Hawthorn
Chick to Fremantle
Croad to Adelaide

with a few draft picks thrown around somewhere, maybe Hawthorn giving us a third/ fourth rounder.

Your thoughts...

Jesus, how much room to move do you have in your salary cap?

Remember Croad is on huge dollars with the loony Dockers, so if you take Croad, you also have to take over his existing contract

I know but with Johnson leaving that frees up room in the salary cap for Croad and I believe we have some space in there as I can remember last year we were talking about Hall, McKernan who were 400k+.

As far as I can remember, Croad didn't have any say as to where he was to be traded.

Hawthorn wanted to get Luke Hodge and the only way was to trade Croad to Freo and get their early draft pick.

As Croad recounts it, he had had some operation and when he was in recovery he asked the nurse where he was playing football the next year and she said "Freo". Sounds a bit odd doesn't it ?

I think snakebite's suggestion has some merit as when Croad was interviewed he said he wouldn't have minded coming to Adelaide. Presumably if those trades were done, there could be some adjustment of contracts although I believe Kane Jonhson is on much more than Croad.

I also believed this was a board for crows supporters...
Then why do so many crow supporters post over on the roos board lately.
After all it is a free country isn't it.

I suppose a question that needs to be considered are we better off going for a ready made player such as Croad or trying our luck with a high pick youngster (for Johnson). With the Crows clearly aiming for a premiership next year, Croad probably could be a good option. I agree that he plays his best football in the backline & would gives us more height with Bassett more suited to a flank IMO. Also, would give us flexibility with many of our key positions players capable of going back & forward.

On the issue of Croad's contract, I got the impression he was on quite a bit (I'm sure a Freo fan will clear this up). Would have thought more than Johnson's previous contract, but perhaps less than the new one he was offered. I don't think the salary cap would be an issue, as Adelaide aren't stretched to the max on it like some other clubs. However, if Croad came to the Crows on big money, would this upset some of the other players who are on less? AFC has a history of not going over the top with player payments.

I also enjoyed yesterdays story in the Advertiser. AFC Annual report for 2002 should also be a good read.

As for Croad, it's an interesting idea. He was bloody awful the last time we played Freo, he would have to get his act together in a big way to fit in here. Still he would be a good key defender for us if Croad/Chick/Johnson or Angwin (12 months off and being back at home should straighted that boy out so we can get something for him!) deal ever went ahead. Mr Reid has a very tight reign on the AFC purse strings so salary cap issues may also prevent Mr Croad from being a Crow.

Yeah I know but as I said I don't really think he is suited to the forward line but for some reason Freo followed Hawthorn and put him there. I think he would get his act together with Ayresy because he would push him and get the absolute best out of him, and there will be more competition for spots here than at Freo which IMO will make him work harder if he wants to stay in the team.

As far as I can tell Croad is on about $500K, if you add that to the better players on the Crow list, well let's see

McLeod - $500K
Rucciuto - $400K
Carey - $350K
Stevens - $300K
Bickley - $300K (but only half is counted)
Smart - $300K (but only half is counted)
Hart - $350K
Clarke - $300K
Goodwin - $400K
Edwards - $300K
Welsh - $250K
Fitzgerald - $250K
Massie - $200K
Bode - $200K
Burton - $350K
Stenglein - $250K
Bassett - $200K
Biglands - $250K

I reckon they'd be around the mark, only trouble is that it adds up to $5,000,000, so your core of best players is on even less money than what I have guessed.

So how on earth could the Crow management justify getting Croad at his $500K.

Sorry guys, I don't reckon that one adds up

I think you will find the Crows players are paid less than what you would expect. I would be very suprised if Burton was on $350K & one of highest earners. I don't beleive we are close to the cap maximum. However, the point that Croad is on $500 is very relevant, as I think getting him for that amount would annoy some of the other Crows players who are on less & earning probably below market value.

I doubt Massie would be on 200k, Burton no way on 350k, I doubt all the young players would be on 200-300k as the average for each player is about 169k or something. I've also heard that Goodwin is not near 400k. More towards 200-250k.:)
