I am not sure that this belongs on the Eagles Football board however consdering that we have hijact Exters post I thought it may be appropriate to start a post where anything Croatian can be discussed.

Please give us your thoughts....

Good idea!!!

I find it funny that on my Mum's side, we're Croatian (and Australian) and Dad's from NZ, but his parents came there from Croatia!!! Croatian on both sides!!! And I think his sister is married to a Croatian too!!!

My kiwi cousins have been over there playing Rugby over the past few years!!!

I don't think my surname is Croatian though... no idea where its from!

I can relate.

My surname is Polish I think! No idea how I got it though as whole of my fathers side is Croatian, my mothers side is half croatian and half hungarian.

i find it also interesting to note that your dad is Kiwi. Apperently a great deal of Croatians also immigrated to NZ, infact my flatmate (who is Kiwi) her best friends from NZ are also Croatian and she went to their wedding, in Croatia, earlier this year.

What a small and weired world we live in.

It seems like the Croats/Serbs/Bosnians etc are very similar to the Irish. Appears that more are ex-patriots rather than living in their own country:D

My name is as common in Croatia as say "Michelle Smith" would be here, which is kinda funny as it's about as uncommon here as "Michelle Smith" would be over there...

"oh - that's unusual, where's that from? Can you spell it for me?" is the usual response I get.

Born here, but family originally from Bacina in Juzna Dalmacija, husband's parents from Otok Prvic, in Sjeverna Dalmacija.

I'm also dyed in the wool Aussie - but proud of my heritage, born and bred in Fremantle and purple through and through.
Go Freo. ;) :D

Ah Eastern Europe, the land that vowels forgot :)

Mhhh....try Central Europe ;-)

Ohh IP.... I do not know the island your husband is from. However considering the number of islands in Croatia and the fact that I no longer live there maybe you can forgive me.

Cheers

Tiny island - two villages with about 400 people between them (now, although there are more than that living here in Perth from his village...), no cars... heavenly! His parents have a house with the front door just 12 metres from the Adriatic.
It's less than a kilometre off the coast from Vodice, near Sibenik. Can't wait to get back there!

Have been to Vodice, before a great place...

Most of my family live in Zagreb, however my uncle has a holiday house in Rovinj in Istra. One of my aunties has another holiday house in Novi Vinodol and my cousins husbands family have a holiday home on Supetaru (Brac). Another Auntie lives in Drnis, some 50 km inland from Sibenik...

My favorite palce in whole of Croatia is Dubrovnik and Makarska.

Yeah, quite a lot migrated to Australia and New Zealand, and I think I have cousins in America too. My cousin (kiwi) has just come back from living in Croatia (over 5 years I think) and has a Croatian girlfriend, I think he brought her over to see if she'd live there with him.

My surname might be greek or something ... I think my Mum's Dad's is Bulgarian, her Mum's is Italian... but I think her family may have come from Venice or Austria as well (further back).

My name (actual name) is Russian, so teachers at school thought I was Russian! I have no connection to Russia whatsoever!!!

And footy related, Mum mentioned that a couple of relatives used to play for West Perth a long time ago!

Not the Bogunovic mob was it? I think I might be distantly related to them (my grandmother was a Bogunovic).

Ramsay Bogunovic, what a player for Geelong and the Black Ducks ............ and you thought it was only a recent idea to recuit tall athletic chaps.

Makes alot of todays "dud" draft picks look not too bad.

Know a couple of Croats, nice people, but even they admit that they are not known as the most even tempered people. Anyway their heritage has produced some good sportsmen & women.

I seem to remember a young bloke called Ramsay Bogunovic who played a few games for the Cardies. He was big bugger but didn't seem to amount to much - what happened to him?

I am first to admit that I can get hot headed sometimes, having said that I am in my early thirties now and have come down a great deal... Maybe I am becoming an anglo saxon.....

Another thought that has just crossed my mind, and this has absolutely nothing to do with Croatia, but I use to go to Mt Lawley High in Perth and one of my friends was a guy Con Gotsis. As a 16 year old, he was around 6'3 and a s hit hot footy player, he was already playing with West Perth, most likely under 19 or seconds. Does anyone know anything about him? Just curious really its my small link back to the past.

Was selling second hand cars out Wangara way a few years back

My surname is Croatian. My grandfather was born in Croatia but the rest of my family are all Aussies. I heard that the most common parts of a Croatian name are the "ich" and "jak" parts.

I have none of those parts in either of my names....

As you all know, I am a proud Aussie but I love to remember the Croatian heritage I have. My Grandfather was from the district surrounding Karlovac and my granmother was from Hercigovina (near Mostar).
Visited Croatia in 2000 and I absolutely loved the culture. The people are friendly (yes we do have a temper though!) and I couldnt think of anywhere better to go on holiday but Dubrovnik and Split.

Croatia is a great place to visit, as is most of other Eastern Europe. Have been to Vodice, not as good as it used to be, but sure looks better, with the new marina and all...

"ich" - yes

"jak" - no

Jakovich is equivalent to "Jackson" basically, so the "Jak" is just a reference to some long-dead ancestor, not any more common than say a "johnson" or "Thomson" in English etc, etc...

BTW - I have an "ich"... no need for scratching though as it's not a medical problem!

Are Serbs welcome in this thread?????? :(

You wouldn't know the name of the place because my familiy originates from a place about 30 Kms from Mostar. I had a lot of family in Mostar (still do now but not as many) Lovely place, well known for its good climate and good Hepok wines:D
