Edwards has been our most consistent but I gave my vote to Roo. Just an absolute champion of the game. In the decade alone, he received five All-Australians (twice as captain), two gold jackets and a Charlie. All of the other players in the poll are up there but I can't overlook the Roo.

Andrew Mcleod, he was one of the most dominant players in the competition for the first 4 years of the decade before remaining the premier player in his position for the rest of the decade.

Just edges out Roo due to playing the whole decade and Goody.

Seconded :thumbsu:

Tyson Edwards for me:thumbsu:
Then Roo, McCleod but not Goodwin, bad choice in the mix I think.

Goody was AA five times in the 00's, Dual B&F, Club Captain. I think your being a tad harsh on Goody.

Out of the four he may be the fourth selection, however he deserves to be included in a poll like this.

Im pondering it.

First instinct is to say Roo, but Macca is very close.

Goodwin deserves discussion, but i dont feel his best comes close to the other two.

Edwards doesnt belong in the discussion. In no year has he been our best player, let alone the entire decade.

McLeod over Roo just because he played the whole decade
(they're too close to split and that was the only way I could)

then Edwards for his consistency
then Goodwin as the best of the rest

Tough one, hate to seperate these great players, but have gone with Roo, followed closely by McLeod. Edwards was close, but the fact that he didn't win a B&F as Carl points out probably counts against him, although IIRC he was the only one to remain in the top 10 every year, during which he only dropped out of the top 5 twice and managed 3 runners ups and a third. Goodwin with his 3 B&F wins is certainly right up there too.

Above is a good summary:

IMO: Macca by a hairwidth from Roo
followed by a fair gap to Goody and then Edwards.

PS: A couple of my own thoughts - Goody seems very underrated by many yet he was Top 10 (8 times) including 3 club champions plus All-Australian 5 times. For this reason he gets 3rd for mine.

I would also point out an error made by several posters who stated that Edwards was the only one in the top 10 for the whole decade, however, i would point out that McLeod also was top 10 every year including 2 wins and top 4 (7 times).

I'm shocked by how underrated Goodwin seems to be going on the votes and discussion so far.

Do I think Goodwin is our best of the decade? Probably not, Ricciuto's AAs and especially Brownlow puts him top in my opinion although Roo not playing the whole decade and his injury tarnished final season make it close between him and Goodwin in my opinion.

As VanR88 pointed out Goodwin was AA 5 times during the decade and twice club champion. Those are awesome achievements and reflect his brilliance this decade.

And I love McLeod and think he's a legend but let's not forget those years mid decade where he struggled (relative to his own high standards) in the midfield and many on this board questioned his commitment and desire. Unlike Goodwin who has played in the middle for the whole decade, McLeod has played in the perhaps easier half back role for much of it.

Edwards, also a great player just doesn't quite stack up to the others. He is as consistent as anyone but doesn't have the matchwinning capabilities of Ricciuto, Goodwin or McLeod. And that is reflected in the AA selections. People have been saying for so long Edwards is underrated (which was true initially, probably 8-10 years ago!) they seem to not have realised that the opposite has come true. That Edwards is mentioned in discussion to be the best of our decade is fair enough. That so many people are voting him as the best is further evidence to me is now slightly overrated these days. Don't get me wrong though, a very very good player but no way is he our best of the decade.

Only injury prevented Goodwin from finishing top 10 in every year. And Ricciuto obviously retired before the end of the decade. So I don't really think that stat is all that relevant to be honest as clearly they were all well inside our top 10 players every year they played.

I do agree with you - i only wanted to point out that someone earlier in the thread had made a basic error which other posters following have relied on.

Your summary post of the 4 players is an excellent one

Pretty sure he didnt. :p

Roo and Macca are very even. One thing that makes me vote for Roo is that he is the bloke that carried our club for most of the first part of this decade.

That game in 2002 against Carlton in the thunderstorm is a prime example of Roo doing just that. Macca has won games for us off his boot, but Roo not only did that but pushed the best out of those around him.

Edwards is our most consistant, a shame he has yet to win a BnF. IMO we (or at least Craigy) will miss him the most out of all of our fab four. Purely because you know that each week he will give a constant performance.

Goody, I am not a fan of. But as pointed out in this thread he has plenty of respect.

1. Roo
2. McLeod
3. Goodwin
4. Edwards

Roo & Macca are well ahead of the other two and not a lot separates them. However, I think Roo probably had the better of this decade while Macca was probably ahead at the end of the 90s. Macca gets bonus points for his longevity, but still comes out marginally behind Roo.

Goodwin is badly underestimated on this board, but the Club and the AA selection panel obviously see things differently. The reality is that he's so far ahead of Tyson that it's just not funny. Not particularly flashy, but he's been VERY effective for the majority of the decade.

Edwards is a clear 4th on this list - but that's nothing to be ashamed of. Roo & Macca are the two best players the club has ever had. Given that we had 90 players represent the club in the 2000s, it's still a mighty effort to be recognised as the 4th best player of this era.
