Not sure if this has been put on show or not but anyway here is the AFC response to Chris McDermott's view & opinion as he put forward last week on channel 7.
Are we doing our bit in schools?
1:24:42 PM Thu 10 March, 2005
In response to what appears to be un-researched comments made on Channel 7 on Wednesday night 9/3/05 regarding the Adelaide Football Club not doing enough in the schools and therefore being under threat as ‘The Team for All South Australians’, we offer the following facts:
* The Adelaide Football Club has conducted a highly successful Hungry Jacks ‘Crows in Schools’ program over the past two years. A past player in Shane Ellen or Andrew Crowell as well as Camry Crow and two current listed players have visited over 270 primary schools throughout South Australia in the past two years. This program has reached over 90,000 primary school students. More than any other AFL Club.
* In addition, the Adelaide Football Club has employed 9 trainees – 1 per SANFL Club – to conduct Coaching Clinics in schools, help with ‘Crows In Schools’ program, promote Adelaide Football Club junior membership and their SANFL Club in 2004 and 2005. This program has seen a further 100,000 children be exposed to quality coaching and the Adelaide Football Club program.
Totals reached in the past 2 years and projection for 2005 –
2003 2004 2005 (projected)
Schools 150 240 250
Students 50,000 140,000 150,000
Again more than any other AFL club
CENTRA PROGRAM
The Club will start a program in the next 2 months sending the ‘Crows In Schools’ program to remote South Australian schools that we can’t physically get to with the program. Our players and Camry Crow will be beamed into up to another 200 remote South Australian schools.
DEVELOPMENT CLINICS
The Adelaide Football Club supply 8 players each week to conduct coaching clinics in schools in the SANFL Development Program. Port Adelaide supply 1 player.
INVESTMENT
We spent on Junior Development –
2003 2004 2005 (Budget)
$79,775 $345,274 $200,000
Again more than any other Club in the AFL.
RESULTS
Membership
This program has seen Crows Nest membership of 15 year olds and under rise from
1, 790 members in 2002 to 3,514 members in 2004 – an increase of 96% in 2 years.
MEASUREMENT
We have a variety of ways of measuring success but one of the most powerful is the registrations of Auskick children in South Australia where they record who they barrack for. The results are as follows –
2001 2002 2003 2004
AFC 47% 45% 50% 45%
Port Adelaide 22% 24% 24% 25%
Note: no other Club in Australia has as high a percentage in their own state.
Leaders in Other States are as follows
WA West Coast 20%
Vic Essendon 18%
QLD Brisbane 42%
NSW Sydney 17%
ARE WE DOING OUR BIT?
We know we do more than any AFL Club in this area these facts prove it.
ARE WE GETTING RESULTS?
* 96% increase in junior membership in two years.
* Holding ground on % of Junior people supporting our Club.
* Highest support rate in the home state of any AFL Club
We will leave the decision to you.
