Got a copy of the AFL prospectus, and as always, I read it cover to cover. Much different look about the crows profile this season. Some interesting things that stand out to me about this year's team:

  • Crows have the 2nd most 20-24 year olds in the AFL. Certainly a positive given I believe a premiership has a lot to do with timing and the age of the majority of players on the list.
  • This one was not so much a surprise, but certainly an interesting stat. Adelaide was 5th in AFL for forward 50 entries, but 15th for goals kicked. Either we werent converting, or or it cleaned out too easily. I initially thought it was the former, but seems we scored either a goal or point for 47% of our inside 50s, which was ranked 15th in the AFL. Inside 50 pressure and conversion needs to improve, and can only go up in my view.
  • Another stat which is concerning (and it attributed to our low percentage scores once inside 50) was we were ranked 2nd in the AFL for bombing inside 50. I think Tippett is a big reason for that. Such a great contested marker and guys maybe assumed he would take a grab. Or maybe had something to do with our young half forward line (Jaensch, Hendo, Sloane, Petrenko) and their lack of patience/awareness going forward. It should be noted that as a team, we were the 3rd best disposal team in terms of efficiency, yet 16th in the league for hitting targets inside the 50. A contributing factor I think would be the fact we chip around the backlines quite a bit, and these kicks - under little pressure - will generally hit the target.
  • From round 10-22, Sloane won 52% of his possessions from a contest which was the highest percentage of any midfielder in the AFL. He is in a similar boat to Danger - once he learns to find some uncontested footy, he will be elite.
Some of the Fantasy Freako comments were also intriguing. Danger was likened to Gary Ablett!

Did anyone else find anything interesting in the prospectus?

interesting. thanks for that.

I think the age thing is pure myth. you need to be good first, old second.

the lack of system into our forward 50 is a problem and has been for a while.

who was number 1? (for bombs inside 50)

who was number 1? (for bombs inside 50)

Richmond. 7.4% higher than the crows in fact.

Another thing I read: there is a stat on time that the ball is inside our forward half. Adelaide is actually third (on avg +3:52), ahead of geelong and pies, who were clearly on top. Just that our conversion was so bad. We had the ball in our forward half more than teams like saints and dogs. Clean up our conversion of 54.7%, maintain this differential, and we can seriously improve. It's actually a good position to be in. Even the saints have the ball less in their half than their opposition but they score so easily.

hmmm, Where's Collingwood ranked?
I thought they'd do it quite often

Doesn't say where pies rank. But their advantage was they dominated turnovers. They create more than 7 turnovers per game than geelong, who were ranked second. They scored 43.8 points just off turnovers. With that many turnovers, and being 1st in time spent with the ball in their half, they had so much opportunity to score. Their conversion was comparable to the crows. But they had so many shots at goal that they would kick winning scores.

The most frustrating thing about our bombing away, is that when the ball hit the deck it was usually 2 on 1, if that.

Tip will always contest the ball at least to a 50-50, so here's hoping we put crumbing pressure on the defence this year.

Need to improve their disposal first before being classed as elite. Nice stat though.

Key points obviously are the predictiablity of our gameplan going forward.

Sides know we are going to try and hit Tippett with a bomb when under pressure. We really need to smarten up going forward as we defitely have the makings of a fantastic forward line.

To me the evolution of use of T Walker will have a large say on this. Many of us were commenting on this early last year, just need to lift the eyes and hit him up more often across half-forward.

Our desire to have 'deep entries' also probably needs to change based on those states. Sure it seems to have helped our time in 50 but not the need for shots on goal from spots with a high chance of conversion.

Also getting C Knights back in the side and contributing will be a huge difference, he'll go over the defence and through the big sticks AND apply a great deal of pressure as per his 09 form.

Porps back to his best can't hurt either ;)
