Crows off to Dubai for NAB cup

what kind of stadiums do they have over there? its an extremely hot climate you'd want to hope they have an indoor one. but with the money they have to blow I wouldn't be suprised if they have one on every block

In February its not too bad in Dubai, 30 degrees C during the day with much cooler nights but I think the game will be played at night. Luckily they are not playing in July or August where its 50 degrees C and 30-40% relative humidity which results in an extreme heat index (70 degrees C plus). It makes Bangkok or a hot Adelaide summer's day seem cold.

I think this game is going to put in a decent crowd, I expect it to be filled to capacity.

Win or lose in Dubai we better have a home game the week after.

The season has only been over for a few weeks and I am already having withdrawal symptoms.

For some reason I cannot see the Datsun 200B making it to Dubai and back in one piece

Has the club made any public comment on why we are doing this?

It a bit strange to me as well.

Its a sponsorship thing, that's why its Adelaide and Collingwood. Adelaide has a major partnership with Toyota, which is the parent company of Lexus, which is a Collingwood sponsor. Toyota has major affiliations in the United Arab Emirates apparently. Emirates are also Collingwood's major sponsor (no brainer as to why they're interested).

Other than sponsorship, I have no idea why somebody would play a game over in Dubai. Honestly, the AFL leadership have no idea how to expand this game overseas.

Why they wouldn't be spending major money on New Zealand, I have no idea. Seems like a no-brainer. Sure they don't have a huge population, but could easily support 3 teams.

Next stop could be Hawaii. Great entry point for the US market because, let's face it, aside from holiday makers, life in Hawaii is BORING. They would probably love to have the excitement of AFL there. If I was planning it, I would make the entry via the high schools and universities. They've got fairly advanced sports programs and are usually willing (given some funding) to create new teams for new sports, as happened at my nephew's school here in LA with Lacrosse. Get AFL into a few schools and bang, instant cross-town rivalry to spice things up.

South Africa is possibly a good choice, although I have no idea what their infrastructure is like.

Don't you guys all remember that John Reid flew over there during the middle of footy season (pretty sure on that) to check that the Oval would be "suitable" to play on.

And yes, it had grass so he gave it the tick.

Also I can confirm that there is some SEVERE jostling among some of the 'lower level" support staff who are very keen to get involved in this
junket oops i mean
match as well.
