Is this the first shot fired by the AFC to see what Taylor is thinking?

Obviously they don't want a repeat of last season, so get in early and put the pressure on his management.
Hopefully TW is a genuine Crows supporter as he previously stated but this is a tough (but enviable) decision for a youngster to have to face.

Walker had scholarship offers to Collingwood and Sydney, he turned them down and saught out Adelaide

he will not leave, he risked playing alltogether to get here, now that he is here, he will not leave.

I think it'll be
95% no one
2% Rutten (aging, and the Giants may want a rock in defence)
2% Armstrong (Sheedy loves aboriginies, and Armstrong is from NSW, he'll be spoken too, question is, does GWS want him enough to offer him a contract)
1% other

"Some people are going to be lured [by money] towards the end of their career, whereas some younger players perhaps might be keen to stay for the lure of team success.

Hopefully Taylor is lured by neither one of those things.

Would we have been any less positive about Bock?

GWS managed to moneytalk Folau into giving up League. (a much harder venture I would think)

I'm confident that he will stay. He grew up as a mad Crows supporter, and he rejected Collingwood and Sydney offers to come to the Crows. So unless he's a money hungry betrayer like Bock and Ablett, he won't be going anywhere.

I hope they started before now, GWS certainly have.

Choco could never play poker, they've undoubtedly signed players already.

My understanding is that they were able to talk to players prior to the final trade/draft day. Sheedy certainly spoke with Mitch Clark (Brisbane) during that time.

I really struggle with this. Whilst it's disappointing to lose Bock, common sense tells you that he would have been mad not to go. A much better financial deal - which, given his recent form, was probably not warranted. Ablett had little else to prove with Geelong. He'd won two and played in 3 grand finals. Won the Brownlow. Apart from money (which no-doubt was the clincher) he had the opportunity to help set up a new club and try and emulate his achievements there. A great challenge.

If you were offered a sh!t load of money to change jobs, I reckon you'd look long and hard at it too. It doesn't make you a "betrayer". It makes you someone who is looking to the future. Your future. Smart business in my opinion.

I really don't have an issue with Bock, good on him I say.

Walker ain't going anywhere - he is a star

Yeah, it's one thing to lose a veteran who was arguably past his prime and somewhat injury prone, I'd be devastated if we lost a young gun like Walker who hasn't shown anywhere his full (and massive) potential.

Needs to have a big season, I really want to see this guy enjoying his footy.

I like this point. I hate seeing the likes of Bock and Ablett referred to as "money hungry" and "traitors". Why must a player be tied to one club for life? If there's something they want that another club can offer, whatever that may be, why is it wrong for them to move? These guys are real people, with real lives outside of footy, not inanimate objects owned by a club. It's just a job for a lot of them. It may be a job that entertains millions, but it's still just a job - and one with a fairly short term. I don't blame any player for wanting to set themselves up for the future. If Taylor decides to move, then it's his decision and we'll have to live with it. Life will go on.

Sorry but I hope our squad believe their tenure at the Crows is more than just a job.
Otherwise piss off and don't trip over your wallet on the way out!!

of course its not more than a job, lets not be so silly or naive.

its a job, its a business and rightly so.

hopefully we put a compelling business proposition to Tex

Let's hope that the reason why the club stated that we had salary cap restraints when we recently pulled out of the Andrew Walker chase is because we were saving a little extra coin for Tex.

Either that or we are paying alot of coin to players who are rubbish.

must be a new year... this thread has me nodding in agreement to yours AND Jenny's posts!!!

Be very interesting to see how the likes of walker, vince, otten respond to early offers.... good on the club for forcing them to show their hand so to speak.

Let's not forget that whilst money was certainly an important component of the Gold Coast's offer to Ablett, Brown, Bock et al - don't discount the part that a beach side lifestyle (or at least the perception thereof) played in the decision making process. Add to that, south east Queensland is not exactly foreign to Australian Rules football and that there is a solid base of support already in place.

The same can't be said of GWS. Speaking as someone who lived in south western Sydney for 5 years in the late nineties and early noughties, there are absolutely no redeeming features to this part of the world! Its a concrete junge, its residents (and media) are insular and have no support for anything other than rugby league.

Any player who makes the decision to join GWS with $ signs in their eyes may well regret their decision once they come to live in the place.

Their window for signing players (in this case Walker) was from the conclusion of our last game of the season until the last of the drafts (the rookie draft) was conducted.

They had the ability to not just "talk to" players in this window, but to actually sign them to contracts for 2012 and beyond.

Here's hoping we haven't already left it too late with Tex.

You do realized that every club is obligated to spend 92.5 % of the salary cap right? It doesn’t matter if they are the 17th club or the premiers, they have to spend 92.5% - they are required.

In 2011 the AFL salary cap will be set at $8,212,500 million dollars a year, which will only eliminate $615,937. To a normal person, that’s a lot of money but to a business that runs into the tens of millions, if not hundreds of millions every year, that’s a pittance.

That amount of salary cap would only be like one good players and the 6 rookie listed player’s wages, once again and not really surprising, and an unfair and unjust comment to make. Therefore, that extra bit of salary goes pretty quickly.

Anyone know what salary cap % we pay? Is it common knowlege?

100% i would have thought. I was under the impression, club's are only allowed to pay the 92.5% of the salary cap if they qualify for Competitive Balance Fund (CBF) or the Annual Special Distribution (ASD) fund.

We must be able to pay less than 100% if we are keeping some in reserve for players such as Taylor.

Yeah, maybe. I don't know what the actual amount (percentage) of the cap is that we pay.
