Nothing has changed since 2022. Press hard against bad teams. Smack them. Do the same against good sides and get carved up. None of our defenders have a chance with the ball coming in as cleanly as it does, and with how far in front they’re told to play.

The fact that this has continued this long tells you how complacent we are. We get carried by our talent. Our systems don’t stack up in the slightest.

Surely one of Jones, Busslinger or Khamis would have made our defence better than it was with the selected 6 today.
Not unless we change our defensive structure around the ground when the ball is in contest or when we are transitioning forward. They would make zero difference

With the delivery they were getting, Matt Scarlett and Alex Rance could have been playing for the Dogs and we would have still been horribly exposed.

  • Tackling was awful. Our pressure was poor and we let a side transition forward way too easily.
  • Decision making was ordinary and we played into their hands with our tempo, essentially encouraged them to rebound against us. So many times we instantly switched or moved it on when there were no options - didn‘t take our time to assess and it cost us multiple times.
  • Naughts fantastic again. Thought that was clearly Bonts best performance of the season.
  • Skill errors and fumbles hurt us. Adelaide were clean and their field kicking was excellent, we were the opposite. Again, I‘d suggest this is due to lack of pressure.
  • Felt Tim should‘ve had about 10 ruck frees today. ROB was coming across and blocking at just about every contest.

Where are all of those people before the game who said the team didn't need another key defender in? 17 marks inside 50 from only 52 entries. Getting beaten is one thing, but having it happen in a predictable manner with a setup that clearly wasn't working is another thing all together.

What exactly is our Plan B?

I got shot down for calling for Jones. Our defence definitely lacked a lot of leadership today, so there were 2 fronts he could have helped on even if he’s maybe not at 100%. He’s a pro.

Dolan was fine but weird decision to have him on the wing for certain parts of the game. Was too small to impact.

Needs to be playing at half forward/small forward to be impacting the game.

When the vast majority were uncontested marks what exactly was another Key Defender going to do??? Our defensive system breaks down against good teams

Ah another make it or break it game an ofcourse we come up short, selection again an obvious miss, how anyone thought going in with the key backs we had has to be blind, anybody saying coffield would be offering more then jones has to be kidding themselves, jones still more then capable then shutting down, still baffling that our coaches can’t see that.
And by god Williamson should not be aloud to umpire our games again the little flog has it out for us something shocking.
Another season down the gurgler.
Mediocrity can’t escape this club.

I really do not understand why Busslinger and Khamis were omitted from the side.

Haven’t been watching VFl games, what are they not doing that’s not getting selection?

What they are going to do is play man on man defence and lock down and make body contact. They were uncontested because Lobb and OD are interceptors. You can’t intercept if no one is locking down. If you have a lockdown key defender like Jones in the side our interceptors can intercept.

Great crowd, 41,000 odd. Maybe the AFL could consider that the traditional time slot works for families?

Thillthorp gave Lobb a bath . Our defence was ordinary . Every time they went forward they looked like scoring . Couldn't take a contested grab , couldn't get within five metres of a direct opponent.

So many goals from turnover , we were pressured out if it . Holding the balls, poor exits, not enough ground ball clean gets .

Darcy had his poorest game since his return but still did some good things . We needed more from other forwards today. Way too much reliance on Naughts and Darcy , our forwards are too content to crumb instead of leading . Bit of complaceny with Darcy & Naughts doing their thing?

Bont was imperious today

So many boring stoppages ...

Scores From Turnovers
WB: 4.3 (27)
AD: 11.8 (74)

A 47-point differential, we came into the game averaging +12 on scores from turnovers.

Adelaide scored from 28% of our turnovers, and we scored from just 11% of theirs. We just cannot defend once we hand it over, we wallpaper over it against bottom 9 teams, but any team that has any skill in ball movement tears us apart.

When we keep losing against the better sides in a similar manner it is not simply team selection that will make up the difference.

As quite a few astute posters point out our players, not just defenders, take up attacking positions when the contest is 50/50. We lose the contest or worse win and turn it over our entire defensive zone is out of position.

When transitioning from defence all defenders move to aggressive positions, a turnover or poor decision and we are out of position.

Not sure how many contested marks Tillthorpe and Fogarty alone took, but they took a plethora of uncontested marks.

Our younger players are not yet built to consistently perform against the better teams. That just takes time, but we have to address our defensive system yesterday

Spot on. The amount of times Crows players were able to lace out players inside 50 with zero pressure applied, I’d need 3 more sets of hands to count them.

Work rate was pretty poor out of stoppages allowing Crows to get to the outside first and generally through the middle of the ground. Our defenders were always going to be up against it.

We played really poorly and still only lost by 9pts. The only upside from today’s game.
