then we are in trouble.

Which club has the culture we most deride? Richmond. What is it characterised by? Well..

  • Merciless criticism of the players
  • Attacks on the coach after every defeat
  • Unreal expectations, particularly placed upon young players
  • Destabilisation of the board and management
  • Ridiculous criticism of the recruiting staff, particularly the use of individual pick comaprisons to prove incompetence - when anyone with a brain knows you could go through the same exercise at 15 other clubs and "prove" that they're all useless.
  • Threats by fans to tear up memberships, stop attending etc
  • Calls to delist players after 2 weeks
If this Board is anything to go by, 7 years of failure has addled the collective Carlton mindset, and our culture is rapidly starting to mimic Richmond. FFS "supporters" we are all frustrated, and its fine to vent once in a while, but we are still the youngest list in the AFL and we are trying to undo a decade of poor decisions.

Culture matters - lets not become a club that eats its own

Yup that's about the Richmond board at the moment, and it pisses me off.

28 years gets to people like you wouldnt believe and they're just senile now with no patience for anything.

You're a quarter of the way there but you've got a long way to go to get to some of our "supporters" level.

Storm in a teacup really. People feel helpless being able to do anything but sit back and watch the losses mount up. When they feel helpless, they feel frustrated and they vent. I guess you have to look at how those supporters react when we do win to see if winning is their priority or if bagging the club is their priority.

It takes a bit of passion to come in here and vent rightly or wrongly. I don't always appreciate it either but can often appreciate the motivation if not the words.

I may have to merge them all into the one weekly whinge thread however as they take over the boards and elicit a real shitfight.

It annoys the hell outta me that it seemed at the start of this year that Carlton people had accepted that we still have a way to go even though Judd and the return of Stevo would make some immediate positive difference. Ratts is in all the media (as were some players) saying be patient Carlton fans.

A lot of posters on this forum and others seemed to get it.

Then 3 weeks in you've got people saying "i resign from this board", "delist him and him and him immediately", "sack the coach", "i'm never buying another membership" etc etc. Get a grip FFS.

We need Rachel Hunter doing some ads for us on the tele ala the old pantene motto.

Spot on - hopefully the peanuts you refer to are NOT reflective of our support base, because otherwise we're in a lot of trouble as a club

Guys the simple fact is we are massively under achieving and at the moment the reason is a complete lack of defensive pressure and fitness by our entire side which is making me really worry if Ratten has any clue at all about modern football.

Our side should not be conceeding such massive scores each week... I look through it and I see a very talented group of players abliet on the young side

Look i understand the frustration, but it was never gonna happen in an instant. Blues people should be happy that we have gone from 100+ point floggings to being in a position to win every game so far this year. That is a huge improvement.

Actual wins are not as far away as a lot of people think.

if you are playing AFL and you can not hit a target 20 meters away week in week out, you are going to get critisised

expectations are that players give 100% week in week out, that players improve each year they are on the list and that players learn from their mistakes.
we have players who fails in these area's and they should be critisised.

Being the youngest list in the comp does not excuse you from making basic football errors each week.
being the youngest list in the comp is not a reason for players failing to man up on an opponent.

You have summed it up nicely here i think.

I get as frustrated as the next person watching us lose every match, but each time i just try to take the positives out of it.

Remember, we have been COMPETITIVE in each of our outings so far this season. We havn't been handed a flogging yet. The same can't be said for Essendon, Richmond, Melbourne, West Coast and others. Sure, these teams have wins on the board which is the most important thing. But if we are in a winning position in most of our games, its going to click eventually and the confidence will build.

We have a young list, and im sure that none of these young players have been scarred by losing just yet.

I actually enjoy the diversity of opinion from Blues supporters - both positive and negative. I think the balance has been about right. Despite not winning any games after 3 rounds, there have been plenty of positives, which have been pointed out. There are some problems that need addressing, and it's great that people are putting forward their views in a passionate and entertaining manner. Comparing Carlton supporters to Richmond, is completely wrong IMO. Just have a look at the Floodmond board - they are tearing each other apart. In a way it's understandable because they realize Terry and Miller have sold them out big time, with a list containing many oldies on long, large contracts, plus an unbelievable litany of draft and trade disasters that have become footy folklore. The recent exposure of their salary cap cheating, has just added fuel to their fire. :)

beign the youngest list in the comp is not a reason for players failing to man up on an opponent.

There is a difference between reasons and excuses.

Being the youngest list in the comp means that we are largely inexperienced, and of course that means we are going to make more errors. This is a reason.

An excuse implies that these players are copping out of their responsibilies, and that is never acceptable. I'm sure the players aren't down there at the club saying "well, i was going to pick up my man, but i just havn't played enough games to know that yet".

P-plate drivers die in higher numbers on our roads due to inexperience. This is trying to be minimalised, but obviously, inexperienced drivers will usually make more errors on the road just like young footballers will make more skill errors on the field.

There IS a reason behind it, but you cant use that reason as an excuse. You have to take what you can from each experience and learn from it. Our players are doing that every week.

I can accept being the youngest list in the comp will mean that at times the opposition will be physically stronger than us
when the pressure is really on we will make some mistakes
our depth is not as good as some other teams and injuries will have a bigger impact on us than they will have on some other teams

but an AFL footballer missing a 20 metre target
an AFL footballer dropping an uncontested mark
an AFL footbaler missing a set shot from 30 metre's out
an AFL footballer failing to lay a shepherd for his teammate
an AFL footballer not being able to use the opposite side of their body

youth does not excuse these actions.

after the essendon i couldnt help but think....it shouldnt be this hard to get a win. Cant stand watching the adelaide teams bitch and moan when they lose 2-3 in a few weeks, meanwhile whats it been, almost a year? I honestly cant remember the last win...

venting is necessary....if i couldnt come here and at least have a cry and see what others think i could see myself turning away completely

this year simmo has killed me with this...cant stand it

I will be the first to admit that the last few weeks I have been criticizing the players. But I am not going to stop criticizing them and make the same old excuses for them. It's about time that we as supporters and fans of this great club ask our players who pull on the Navy Blue jumper to show some guts and give us 100%, I don't care if we loose if we give 100% but to do what they have been doing the last few weeks is a disgrace. I am not blaming the young kids in our side I am blaming the seniors our so called leadership group. I am sick of duds and soft ***** going on the raid and newspapers asking us to be patient when they are the ones who haven't given a ____ about this club for the last 6 years. I am just scared that with our supporters lapping up the lame excuses from these players and whats worse making excuses for them we are always going to be at the bottom of the ladder. I like a lot of you love this great club, I have brought my membership without fail year in years out, even when I gave struggled to have any cash I have still paid my membership. If our players show as much passion for this great club as our fans and supporters do then we wouldn't be the laughing stock of the comp, to me it seems like we aren't getting anywhere fast. ALL I WANT IS 100% GUTS AND COURAGE. I am not asking for much at all and actually I am entitled to ask for more.

halfe way through last season i was at breaking point, i love the club i deffend them allways i pay my way i am a good supporter, the bad times had managed to get to me and was having trouble being possitive any longer, on telling my best mate and fellow blue of this he said to me, change the way you are looking at this, he seen that all i was wanting was a win and i still do, but he convinced me to go to games and settle with being within 30 pionts, i did this, and again i can now see the light at the end of the tunnell, it has helped me stay true, CARLTON will win games very soon, we are nearly there, we are not going to make the 8 but we will win games, and then i can get back to hanging it on all that have and are still giving to us now. What we have had to endure due to the AFL cutting us out of the draft has been torture, and it is only a strong club like ours could take and still bebuild, we will win games very soon.

i don't really get your point. If we had players that were doing this significantly more than other players i would get your point. But what u are pointing out are basic errors that are made by all players whether young or old. Its how often they happen is the problem. For instance Fish missed a very basic set shot on sat night, but so do players from other clubs. mistakes happen in the game of football.

I think are skills are under developed mainly b/c of our youth. I would be very interested in hearing some feedback from those close to the club however about the performance of our skills coach. This is the one area where i have not seen alot of improvement with our young players and each time i bring it up i get greeted with silence which is really quite comical. Craig Bradley may or may not be part of the problem but the fact his title is skills coach implies to me that he has some responsibility for improving the skills of our young players. Or am i just crazy?

did you hear that everyone? only positive stuff from now on. lets develop a positive culture

- Russell still has plenty of years ahead of him, ratts should keep giving him a go.
- Wiggins was BOG for the Ants, he needs more games to develop into a star HFF.
- Scotland has some of the most effective possessions in the game. AA or brownlow.
- The effort from the boys in the 4th quarter was sensational. when the game is on the line the boys now how to step up.
- Ratten did well shutting down essendons midfield run through the corridor.

FFS. nothing wrong with criticising whats wrong with the club. the only heads people are calling for is russell and scotland. big deal, these players have been as effective as a loose hooker.
this forum would be so boring if every second thread was about how marc murphy is gonna be a gun.

Agree :thumbsu:.

I'd actually be more worried about the so called "supporters" who are currently looking at wanting to lose most of the games this year for even more high draft picks. Actively supporting a losing culture is much worse.

If we get another pick 1 or 2 this year i will throw up.

In years past i believe we needed them because we simply didn't have the talent or players that could comprise a team. We were really THAT bad. But now that we have the foundations in place, i dont want anymore high picks.
