Looking at the list of guys coming out of contract at the end of 2013, this is how I see it

Almost certain to stay
Bock, Rischitelli, Harbrow, Broughton (I think you will find he signed a 2 year deal)

Gone
Brown, Brennen

Like to re-sign (this is where e need to concentrate our efforts)
Smith, Nicholls, Shaw, Allen, Prestia, Gorringe,Tape, Gillbie, Shade, Horsley (although I think he also has a 2 year deal)
t
On the edge
Patrick, Weller, Thompson, McKenzie, Hall, Wilkinson, Hutchins

On this basis while not ideal I am not too concerned

I won't lie, that list of youngsters is a bit unnerving...

I would not be upset if Wilkinson leaves.

On when he says Hall, is he referring to both Halls or what?

2011 - 48 senior list, nine rookies with $1m TPP extra allowance
2012 - 46 senior list, nine rookies with $800k TPP extra allowance
2013 - 42 senior list, nine rookies with $600k TPP extra allowance
2014 - 40 senior list, nine rookies with $400k TPP extra allowance
2015 - 38 senior list, nine rookies in line with other AFL clubs

I copied this off page 3, as I am cofused with list numbers.

I have removed Toy & Hine off present players listed on GCS website and allowed for J Hall as a rookie and Jaeger O'meara to be on senior list.

My count is therefore 37 plus Broughton, Murphy and Cameron. So there are 40 players on the senior list.and 1 rookie.

This being the case this leaves 2 draftees to come, plus I am guessing around 3 rookies.

Also would this mean that at end of 2013 a total of 6 players as a minimum would need to be delisted/traded. This allows for Martin, 2 players to comply with 2014 numbers and the other 3 players that are required to comply with 3 new draftees per year.

Apologies if this is wrong but it is somewhat confusing!

Copied the below names from page 1 of players whose contracts expire at the end of 2012 season.

Yeh makes my head hurt too Tassie, but this season we have lost:

1. Josh Caddy
2. Piers Flanagan
3. Josh Fraser
4. Nathan Krakouer
5. Tom Hickey
6. Sam Iles
7. Alik Magin
8. Lewis Moss
9. Hayden Jolly
10. Josh Toy
11. Taylor Hine (unofficial)

* brings senior list down to 35.

Rookie: Michael Coad (ret.)
Rookie: Andrew McQualter

Incoming:
1. Murphy
2. Broughton
3. Cameron
4. O'Meara
5. Horsely
6. pick #13 (Rd1)
7. pick #57 (Rd3) - surely Boston is far better than anyone we could draft at 57?

* takes senior list back up to 42 for 2013 + we have 3 rookie spots available.
* 2014 season we have to drop to 40 senior players, and then the standard 38 for 2015.

So in 2014, we need to lose at least 6 senior players from the current list, so we can add
3 x required ND selections
1 x senior spot for Martin

And then at least 5 senior players for the 2015 season.

So we have to lose at least another 11 senior listed players over the next 2 years. Although we have guys like Brown, Brennan, Bock, Warnock who all will be hanging up the boots by then.

Think this all adds up?!

That is correct. You'll find in this link that Hine has refused a one year deal put to him by the Suns and North have stated they want to sign him via the pre-season draft. Still not official he has left but it looks extremely likely. When you start to look at next season and who will come off the list you have:

Campbell Brown - Stated he is likely to retire at the end of 2013 and will 30 years old.
Jared Brennan - Under performing and will be 29 years old.
Nathan Bock - Will be 30 years old.
Matthew Warnock - Will be 29 years old.

That is four possible retirements/delistings right there. You add to that guys like Hutchins and Nicholls and it shouldn't be that hard to find 6 players to remove from the list at the end of 2013. Before anyone quotes me, no I don't think Bock or Warnock will go next year but they are possibilities and probabilities in 2014. One question I have is why are there only 3 rookie spots available when the AFL concessions page clearly states the Suns are allowed 9?

Also, why have the mods not made this thread a sticky? It is an important thread that should be a sticky.

Yep your right Matchu, 9 rookies allowed on our list. I forgot we currently have this concession.

I'm not sure why the club doesn't want to have at least at least 4-6 rookies on their list in these early years, as they really are a great way to discover players, especially those matured aged guys without wasting important ND picks.

Mature aged rookies base salary is $49,400, $2800 per senior game + a bonus of $7950 if playing more than 11 games. They are very cheap! Too cheap considering they have to complete the same workload as senior players. I think they can be paid more if the club wants to try and entice a bigger name player onto their rookie list, but the extra is then included in the senior salary cap.

With a young list like ours, experienced depth is vital, especially if that depth includes players that may cover voids in our senior list. Why not rookie a cpl of inside mids, a key fwd and a key defender? They are only on a 12-month contract, bugger all money, have ready-made senior bodies and are a very handy plan B.

I don't reckon any of those guys will retire. Plus you still have plenty left in the tank at 30. Around 32 when all the soft tissus injuries, hamstrings mainly, start going is when it's time.

Would love to keep Bock/Warnock onboard beyond next season if their bodies are holding up, but Brown/Brennan have to go surely. Just cost far too much cash compared to their output. Taking up valuable senior spots.

Be a longshot for Jars to find the passion and motivation this year to become what we all know he is capable of. After opening up though, you never know... opening up with problems can do people wonders. As I said, big long shot but we shall see!

Id say its a fair bet hell have a better season than last year though

I have heard that Gold Coast are considering taking only one player in the National Draft and just going into next season with 41 players, or possibly picking up a player in the PSD on a short term deal. If you went with one less player you could just upgrade a rookie easily at the start of the year. GWS had only 45 players instead of the 50 they were allowed at the end of next year. Its probably a good option for you as that means you will only need to delist 5 next year instead of 6, and pick 57 is not likely to be that great this year.

Take Tippett as a rookie if eligible, let him serve his suspension, then upgrade him to the senior list. Done deal ;)
