With all the talk of who we should target in trade week I wondered what age groups Richmond were lacking on our list and put together this table (attached). With 7 players from the 2006 draft on the list and then only two from 2008, it’s no surprise that many players from the 2008 draft are being linked to us. I’m sure there are a few mistakes, List managing is not my full time job.

Good effort Big Vee. Really shows how well our first round choices have been. Despite a few criticisms of our late round/rookie picks - there's been a few handy pickups IMO Grimes, Lambert, Miles and even Foley before his retirement.

Great work!!:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Im not very good at these things but what would be the average age and games played be with & without Chaplin & Maric as i see these 2 players as being our only senior players that are entrenched in the team and will need replacing in 1-2 years at most

Kinda hard to work out properly as in 1-2 years when they do go the entire list age will have changed.

Very solid effort with 2nd round picks- Rance-superstar; Edwards-A grader; McIntosh-looking the goods; Griffiths-ok; Mcbean real potential.

Missed out on Luke Parker (pick 40) 2010 but can't win them all.

Jackson was going to take Parker, but we traded away our 3rd round pick that year
Still hurts that one

Alex Rance is a first round pick.He was a priority end of first round selection. We traded our second round pick 19 on that wb great whose name i refuse to mention.

If people take the time and effort to look and compare, that list is horrid absolutely horrid out side of the first round picks.

We don't have to wonder why we have struggled so much, or wonder why we have taken on so many mature types.Or why it has taken so long just to play finals. It is right there in front of you all.

Rookie picks alone from 03 to now we would have used at least 30 imo . Yet the only player of any real quality in that time has been Miles and perhaps Foley before injury.
In the main it has been a barren graveyard.

If we are honest the only second round pick of any decent standard that has worked out is Edwards one of how many.

2nd and 3rd round picks since 03.
Gilmore, Roach, Polo,McGuane, Limbach plus first rounders Tambling,Meyer, Pattison in 04.
Then the jackson years.
Hughes, Casserly. First round JON 05. Edwards, Putt, Post,Hislop, Griffiths, Astbury, Dea, Taylor,Batchelor, Helbig, MacDonald, Elton, Arnot, McIntosh, McBean, McDonough, Gordon, Menadue, Drummond,

Our trades in that time have been.
P Bowden, Polak, McMahon, Morton, Thompson, Farmer, Grigg, Maric, Morris, Edwards, Hampson,
plus F/As in Hunt, Knights, Chaplin.

He also wanted Sloane the year we traded away our third round pick for Adam Thomson.

So who was responsible for making that decision. The way I understand it now is that if the list manager wants to do that they collaborate with the recruiters to make sure the player they are getting in is better than who they think they could take in the draft.

I dont particularly want to look back at our drafting and trading anymore than 5 years as it's just depressing. Happy to scrutinise everything since then

We've got some good potential coming through which hopefully we can start to see next year and onwards
The 19-year-old won plenty of ball, too, averaging 22 disposals in the 11 games he played (an ankle injury sidelined him for several weeks). He had a season-high 34 touches in Round 18.

Only twice for the season did Castagna finish with less than 20 disposals. In one of those games, he didn’t make an appearance on the field until after half-time, but still had 13 touches.
thats from the RFC website about Jason Castagna, he's gunna be exciting that young kid

Whats the point in getting the ball 30 times if you butcher it 25 times. And we continue to develop him off hb, who in their right mind wants a bloke coming off hb who gives the ball straight to the opposition more often than not.
If he cant fix his disposal problems he should be delisted. The club will and should give him another 12 months to work on his weaknesses as a rookie.

Hmm.. Shane Edwards used to be a pretty horrid kick too. I like that from around 5 years back we generally only take kids who are great kicks, but sometimes you gotta allow for a little less quality somewhere.
In the case of Castagna, dude he is a rookie pick. Most of those never make it anyway. But what he has shown at only 18 already shows a hell of a lot of promise.
Tough little small defender who can find the ball and dares to take the game on with dashing pace. Plenty of time to improve his kicking, and if theyre in the AFL system long enough they will.
Considering we lack a little dare and dash at times, I reckon he is a pleasant surprise and hope he comes on.

yet its his first ****ing year on the list! give the kid a break

How will we fit him in though? Like Short there are about eight to ten blokes ahead off him . JC I'm sorry will struggle to play afl footy unless our seniors are struck down with some Melbourne FC virus
There will be guys like CEllis , new season crop, traded players Lloyd Lennon etc etc
I watched JC play three games this year and he's really nothing to write home about yet . His disposal as mentioned by many is poor
which puts him behind Short and many others

That's by and large a good thing. The more they develop the greater our depth will be becoming. I'd like to see him potentially play as part of the bottom six, just to make sure those guys are all earning their place
As what separate's good teams from bad isn't the top 6, its the bottom 6

Agree this is the Hawthorn principal but he will be in the 5 to 10 of the VFL which is a long way from bottom six of Afl plus a rookie
In his second year . He will need to rise from Lazurus' grave to get a gig
I still like your thinking but gee

I gave him a break i suggested we give him another 12 months as a rookie.

The rookie list is the place to develop players who have weaknessess.
Personally i dont think we should be taking any player who lacks in the basics even as rookies. If they cant kick by the time they are 18 then its unlikely they will improve enough to play at the elite level.
What the hell we are doing taking such deficient players is beyond logic. You ultimately spend all your time teaching them basics they should already have and the rest of development goes out the window.

There was a reason why the club publicly came out and said we will not take players who can't kick.It seems in recent years that philosophy has gone out the window.

Shane Edwards is still an ordinary kick of the ball, yet he looks absolutey top notch elite compared to Castagna.

The main reason i have said anything on here is there are people who want Castagna promoted to the list proper.Let him show he can kick the ball first.
And i like the way he goes about playing the game, who doesnt? but its not worth a damn if all he does is turn the ball over every time he gets it especially coming of h/b in the AFL.

The thing is, is he "butchering" it under pressure? because that takes time to learn to deal with, his stats show that he can play, maybe not at AFL level yet he can play. It takes more than a year or two to know this[/QUOTE]
