just been on the main board and read the time capsule thread about everyone's predictions for the coming year. i was suprised at the amount of people who tipped our Benny for the Brownlow. He's always up around the top but do you think he'll win it in 2004? i think if he's going to win it, it'll have to be in the next two or three years. At the moment most of the elite midfielders are late 20's early 30's and past their prime. I don't think the new crop (Judd etc) will fully assert themselves until they're 23 or 24 (2006/7) so it could be his best chance.

Every year they say it and it never happens. This year Im not saying anything. Lets just take it one game at a time. He's definitely good enough, but alot of other things are riding on it:

The team has to be successfull

he has to stay uninjured

The other boys in the midfield cant play as good a footy as him or they'll take votes of him

If it works out for him and he plays well, then he's a chance.

Well he got 2nd last year when the midfield was firing so they can still play well, just not QUITE as good as him.

He looked great in the Wiz cup I saw at TD. Clean hands (not a single fumble), good disposal, creative, and all the time looked to be on cruise control. Its hard to say he could improve on previous years, as quite frankly he's been amongst the most consistent midfielders in the AFL over the past 5 years, but so long as he plays to his high standards he's always a chance to win it.

In any case, I'd prefer Cousins to play well consistently as he currently does, rather than have a few "flash in the pan" performances that earn him 3 brownlow votes whilst being ordinary the rest of the time. The Brownlow is not a true indication of who the best player of the season was.

who the *** are u? so it wasn't Woods but Goodes who won it. and cuz was runner-up, ie-2nd.

well even if you dont view him as second, because there were 2 firsts and 2 other seconds also he was still only 1 vote short of equal first and 2 votes short of outright. Thats pretty damn close!

I agree with Carly. It's the same every year with Cuz being a favourite with the Chas. Judd and Kerr will steal votes along with Gardy and maybe Embers. The think a tilt at a flag rather than the Chas is the main goal for Cuz and if we play finals this year, I am sure he is professional enough to concentrate on the ultimate goal.

Still, I think he will win it one year.

Cousins is a proven votegetter.

last year was probably his "worst" in a few years and he finished equal second. (well officially fourth after the three winners)

and i'd suggest he'll have an even better year this year.

and i don't really subsrcibe to the "vote stealing" theory. look at recent winners:

2003 - Ricciuto, Goodes and Buckley. Two top four teams and a team which finished sixth in there.
2002 - Black. Brisbane won
2001 - Akermanis. Brisbane won
2000 - Woewodin. Melbourne came second
1999 - Crawford. can't remember where Hawthorn came
1997 & 98 - Harvey. won in a year when St Kilda made the grand final
1996 - Hird and Voss. Both teams finished top 4 after H&A rounds.

so the theory that if you're in too good of a team other players will steal votes off you isn't as correct as most would think......

Let me say it in plain English.

Cuz was 4th. And don't do "***" at me russ, it's really ugly.

On the topic, he's always a good chance, consistency will eventually get you over the line.... one of these days.

Goodes, Buckley, Riccuito deadheat. All win, place and novelty betting dividends calculated on those three placings. No one came second, no one came 3rd.

Equal 4th gets what it deserves - zip.

You cant say he was 2nd, because there were clearly 3 players who finished higher. He'd only be equal 2nd if there was a single Brownlow winner.

Since 3 players finished with more votes than Cuz, the highest he (& Crawf) could finish is 4th. Therefore they were equal 4th in 2003. Get it? That's the way its always been done.

Edit - just read back pockets explanation.

so if they were all equall first - that makes the bloke immediately behind them 2nd ?

doesnt it ??

AU, how can you be 2nd when 3 blokes finish in front of you.

You need Mc Nissy's new educational booklet. ;)

how can you be 4th when there is no 2nd or 3rd ?

more to the point - where does the sky end ??

I remember wrestling with that concept in primary school.... It's a hard one, I tell ya.
