Collingwood has secured the services of much-improved midfielder Dane Swan for the next three seasons after he signed a two-year extension to his existing deal on Friday.

Swan, 22, broke through for 21 games last season - including the Pies' Elimination Final - after having managed just 30 in the previous four years and he was grateful for the opportunity to extend his stay at the club.

"It's good to know I'm staying for another three years at least, and I owe the footy club a lot seeing as they stuck with me when times were a bit tough off the field and I got in a little bit of trouble," Swan told collingwoodfc.com.au.

"They supported me and showed faith in me and my ability I suppose, and hopefully I can repay them in the next few years by playing some good footy and going deep into the finals."

Swan joined the club after being taken 58th overall in the 2001 NAB AFL National Draft and capped his breakout year with a sixth-place finish in the club's best-and-fairest count

Not suprising, but good news non the less.

Great news, He will be a really good player for the club
He really played well last year up until he got injured, lets hope he can carry his good form into 2007.

Just interested to know if there was any indication during the 2006 pre season that he was going to move into the midfield and become one of the big possession winners in the AFL? Was he used there in NAB cup/practice matches? Did Malthouse give any indication in the media that he would move onto the ball?

No great transformation in form from swan, just that micky mouse had no time for swanny,a lot like scotland, and you guys have a great team man in scotland. Micky Mouse never gave heath a chance, same as swanny never got a decent go in his first 2 years.Get rid of that clown who only excels as a coach when he has mature bodies. No patience No understanding of current trends . Send him to Disneyland.

Yes he has a grade 1 hamstring strain much like Riewoldts. Will miss the NAB Cup round 1 match, but will play the later practise matches. Will be fully fit for round 1.

Does anyone else remember Swan's pre season last year? Did he standout? Was he played in the midfield during practice matches?

Swan took to running with Ben Johnson on most preseason days to build up his motor. Then when he was given a run on the ball he could last in there for longer. Must have helped JOhnson too, because for first half of last year he was leading AFL in yards won (by carry and kick) for one's team. Can only hope both of them have been running again this preason on their lonesomes.

Oh damn, thats no good we really need him to get up for round 1.

I love the bloke (not literally). He looks out of sorts when he's training at times but he will be a very good footballer. A few years back, when he made his debut, I was impressed with him... he didn't dominate by any means, but he knew how to find the ball and he looked the part, or didn't look out of his league should I say. If I was to say he would become a genuine midfielder I would be laughing in that he surprised me - and I wasn't the only one.

He belongs at Collingwood, no doubt.
