Bumped Dane Swan's dad

I never seen a VFA match in my life but I do follow Collingwood and when a player joins the club I have a bit of a read about them.

Im just surprised others don't.

Do you know that Nathan Brown has a twin brother.

Out for the season with a knee...at....West Coast?

Anyway I only jumped on here to see if the OP could change the thread title to Dane Swan's Father..every time I flick past it looks like Dane Swan's dead......and it scares me.

Was watching the game on Saturday with my father-in-law, and he told me a story about Dane Swan's old man, that he kicked a goal after the siren to win the premiership for Port Melbourne in the 70's. He reckons that he'd never kicked a ball more than thirty meters in his life and just came out with a massive 60m torp when it mattered. Not sure how true this is but there you go. Can anyone corroborate?
30 metres is a exageration, he could kick further than that but that kick on the grand final would be one of his longest. His intention was to kick it as far as he could and if lucky would get it to the edge of the goal square hoping Barry Round would mark. Being a Port fan ill have to say unfortunately he didnt suceed in his intention and kicked a goal instead GRRRR 👹

Bit of a strange 'bump' that one. Especially as it was Springvale (not Port Melbourne) who Williamstown beat that day!

For anyone wanting to check it out, the key bit starts at about the 2 minute mark:

Glad you found it, I was thinking it was Springvale, but thought my memory must have been shot. I loved that Willi team. They were all larger than life characters - just great to watch.

There's more highlights here of that game:

There must be another couple of videos, as that^ one is part 3/3.

I played against both those teams and also played with Rickman, I played second division VFA for Sunshine. I loved watching the VFA on a Sunday

Yes it was Springvale but the Port Melbourne Williamstown rivalry is so strong that each and every Port fan would have been baracking for Springvale that day, and for a ex Port legend to seal the win for the enemy... thats salt into the wound 😢

Now I understand - thanks for that!

I loved watching VFA too. Jeez Rickman was a wonderful kick of a footy. Physically NQR for VFL, but just about the best kick in the country at the time.

Rickman was such a good forward no matter where he played. He could kick that ball a mile from when he was a kid, great days the old VFA and a really tough comp

I was at a well known pub in the city at lunchtime on the Monday celebrating Collingwoods flag with workmates. The Williamstown boys were there for Mad Monday celebrating their Premiership.

Little was I to know the next flag I celebrated involved the son of a Williamstown premiership hero!!

By the way, Barry Round is a huge unit.

Okay, so we've now established that it was Willy not Port, 1990 not the 70's, a drop punt not a torp, and with a minute or so to go not after the siren. Half a chance your father-in-law was telling you about a different game... :)

Sloth it wasnt a different game your dad was telling you - he was recalling the 1990 grand final but with a heap of altered / incorect details. Swan played in Port premierships but they were never won by end of game goal to win whilst Swan played for the mighty PORT MELBOURNE.

Used to follow Port in the VFA as a kid, through the seventies and early eighties and what a side: healthy mix of wharfies, unionists, ex cons, thugs, heavies and genuine stars. Buster Harland, Vic Aenenson, the Goss brothers, Freddie Cook, Jim Buckley, Billy Swan, Jim Allender, Dermot, Haenen, greats of their era. In the eight years from 1974 to 1982 they won six flags. Freddie kicked a lazy 10 goals in the 74 Grand Final, he kicked 9 in the 77 GF, 8 in the 81 GF.

Don't forget Anderson, he played at the Pies and made it look easy at times, sam Holt had it on a string, How good were those port Days
