Dangerfield's explosive pace

I've made big calls on Mackay, huge fan, but his pace isn't great. I don't even think he blitzed 3 seconds at draft camp AFAIK. He does however get himself into the right spots to and does the hard things to compensate for his lack of innate athletic ability. IIRC this was even mentioned in after he was drafted as a reason for dropping down a lot of teams' lists as someone of his height and stature usually needs a lot of pace to compensate.

I'm with the others...Mackay is 'quick'.

Having said that, there are two categories of quick...explosive quick or simply reasonably quick. I'd say a reasonably quick player is one who can turn it on at times, would be in the top half/third of the league for pace, and doesn't often get tackled thru lack of speed. ie above average for pace without it being their trademark. This is the type of quick I'd rate Mackay as. Danger is more likely to fit in explosive quick category.
 
3.09 for an AFL midfielder is not quick no matter what way you look at it. As I said he has the tools to overcome his lack of pace. A better example would be his goal in the EF last year where he almost went coast to coast, anticipated a couple opponents very well and avoided them, not through explosive pace or agility, but just by reading the play very well and then using his sharp boot to nail a goal from 50m. That was the quintessential Mackay play. Even more importantly this year his inside game has really come along this year, being amongst the highest clearance getters for the team this year (for some reason I can't the stats working at the moment, but he's definitely top 5).
 
Actually the Mackay one is interesting to me too. I can never figure out whether he's quick or not. Every time I think he's quick, I watch a match and he seems slow, and every time I have decided he's not quick, he runs down a fast player or burns off a quick midfielder.


I think he's similar to Otten - he looks slower than he is. He's very silky with his movements and seems to glide along the field.


As opposed to Danger's runs where he looks like he's kicking the shit out of the oval :D

Means nothing.

Brad Moran and Luke Jericho both recorded substantially 'quicker' times yet I would say Mackay would burn both those hard nuts off.
 
I'm thinking it's mostly 1, 2 & 4 - but predominantly 2 (lack of confidence). I don't really have a reason for thinking that it's not Craig turning him into a Crowbot - call it wishful thinking.

Given a bit more experience, he will learn to know when he's free. Right now he's still adjusting to the pace of AFL footy, which is light years ahead of TAC Cup or SANFL speed. Players just don't have as much time to make decisions and dispose of the ball. This takes a period of adjustment. Once he's adjusted, I think we'll see more of the afterburners.

If Bryce Gibbs wanted to come home would you trade Dangerfield for him? 6 months ago I would have jumped at the chance. Now, I'm not so sure. Dangerfield is going to be a special player as will Gibbs but I think Paddy has natural hardness in his game which Bryce lacks.

No for me. Gibbs is more of a hang off the pack and receive the ball to set up play player. Dangerfield is an in and under clearance machine, something we lack.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong but this year I've seen Bryce as more of a guy who runs into the contested area and gets the ball out than an outside runner. I've really been impressed with him this year.

They'd want more, especially in this draft.

But I think we can just sit Gibbs on the back burner as it's highly highly unlikely.

You rarely see him in and under winning much of the hardball. He goes when he has to but he is more like Goddard, waiting at the side of packs, finding space and looking to set up play.

No way they'd give up Gibbs for that, particularly if it wasn't a top 1 or 2 draft pick.


As WALL-e says though, Gibbs has shown absolutely no indication that he wants to come back. It's a pipe dream, almost certain never to come true.

Gibbs will no doubt be a very good player, we all know that, but Danger looks like he could be more than that - the comparison is made constantly, but he looks like he could be a game breaker like Roo was; a big, strong quick guy who will lead the team and ignite players around him.

I loved seeing him Forward - was a great way to use his pace, strong hands and gives him a way to learn and feel his way into the game and develop his fitness.
 
but the question isn't about pure preference, its whether you'd do a trade. which takes into all factors. and the fact is that Danger will be front and centre of every victorian club's hit list.

Gibbs will be a hedge against the go home factor too.

they're different types of players, but lets not forget how good Gibbs is looking - and damnit we should have had both! ;)
